I did some research and found out that there were another lens with exactly the same optical formula: Pentax fish-eye f4 17mm (Pentax K mount), produced around 10 years later. It has some improvements, including better SMC, built-in shade and more internal filters. According to reviews, it's very sharp, contrasty and colourful. Sadly, it's also expensive and hard to find.
I wanted to thank you for the high quality reviews on these old lenses. I've been watching for a couple years now and have since grabbed a Takumar 50, 35, and recently this 17, thanks to your recommendations. Keep up the good stuff Mark!

I shot a lot of skateboarding with this lens back in the 90s. Picked it up at a camera swap for $50. That was until a board hit it and bent the focus ring in place. Great lens.
Just, the other day, got myself a fisheye lens. No Takumar, but for my m4/3 camera. For many many years, those fisheyes were nothing but an expensive gimmick. But warming up to them by going the action cam route, I quite like the look now. Especially since with a lens like this, you can set the focus yourself. Most action cams, especially budget ones, are fix focus... So now a whole lot of possibilities are opening up... I'm so happy I now have one to play and experiment with. Like said in the video, having fun with photography is essential.
Been re-watching a lot of the Beastie Boys video and I forgot how much they influenced the wide angle lens back in the 90's for me. So cool getting back into it again! So many cool things you can do with it when used appropriately!

I have been using the PENTAX TAKUMAR 17mm Fisheye F4 on my FujiFilm X-T3 that has been converted to a monochromatic sensor. The built in filters work great on this setup. I am picking up a new PENTAX K3 MKIII Monochromatic body next week and will be testing them on it.
I had the earlier non-SMC-Version which is quite similar in the setup. Anoing was the easy to missalligned filter ring and the exposed front element (you mentioned too). I liked it very much, but lens flare was quite significant w/o the SMC coating - so I changed to the later SMC-K-Version. There is a small lens hood buildt in to allows to take fotos throug a window by leaning the hood to the window glas. Further the wilter ring is more protected against missalignments. I use it quite often als a Super-WIdwangel lens on my Pentax K1 because it is so small that it allways fits to the camera bag. With PT-Lens it is easy to correct the destortion in postprocessing.
Dude, those astro-shots are killer! I have an older PL1 with the IR filter removed that would be amazing with this. If you did a day shot with the IR camera, snapped the trees, landscape and vegetation, then shop in the sky shot from the same position later than night.... Now I want a fish eye..so many lenses, but only a small camera bag.....

Ya, this lens really surprised me for the ASTRO stuff! The moonless night definitely helped plus the northern ontario setting! (Away from the light pollution) :)
I cant wait to see more vintage lenses from you.I think I suffer from lens acquisition syndrome. I bought an Olympus 0M 80-200mm F4.5, a Tamron 70-150mm F3.5 FD fit, a Pentacon 135mm F2.8 M42 and a Canon FD 28mm F2.8 and all from used items shops and a heritage centre very recently. Shopping for vintage lenses in real life rather than online is more exciting.

Ya I had no idea and I was like what are these numbers. UV flirter on the main lens. I guess they did that because you can’t really mount any additional filters on it.

The perfect amount of weird to come away from the airport too. Just back from hols and totally wish I had this to get some weird and wonderful snaps by the pool!! Also, the Astro photography is UNREAL!! Truly amazing.
This lens dates from a time before the later computer designs and ED glass enables rectilinear lenses in below 18mm universe. (Exception: Zeiss Hologon, which is cat of a different style.) Now perfectly reasonable ultra-wides are made with zooms. Pentax made about the same in 35mm for the Pentax 67 system, which I have. On this MF lens, you get about the same type of imaging, plus you can attach gel filters at the rear as well as the included dial-in filters. For many years I looked at this type of lens as a gimmick with little real use. Having actually used mine, I find that it makes you think about how it can be used to make non-trick photos, and that can be very educational. I do a lot of landscapes, and you quickly realize that there are many such scenes with no straight lines to manage, so it can work well if a super wide angle is required. The first time I used the lens, I took a straight up shot and had to squat on the ground to not get into the picture. Filters are not a significant issue. The built-ins are more than adequate for B&W. For color, the most used filter is a polarizer, and where the lens has nearly a 180 degree angle, a polarizer is more than useless.
Superb review. Takumar pixie dust makes images that pop and have magical plasticity. Yours is the only review I have seen of this lens and it looks just fine!
Awesome review my man really cool vintage lens. That's the first one I seen with built-in filters. I reviewed the 28th mm on my channel a few months ago I couldn't find fault with it. Dude you're the only channel I've seen with their own neon logo, you're the boss I reckon
If you ever get into the K mount pentax lenses, for sure look for a k 28mm 3.5. It's a unique optical design that is both different from the takumar predecessor and the following pentax M version. It was only made between 1976-77 so it can be hard to come by, but if you find a sub 100 dollar copy, I highly recommend it! It's one of the few lenses on the Pentax Forum where every photo shared looks fantastic. Also look at the review on Phillip Reeves website. You would not be disappointed.
Not weird but wide and wonderful. When choosing Pentax lenses ALWAYS go for SMC super multicoated Takumar’s. Much less flare, more color saturation and contrast.
Great video Mark! I love fisheye lenses and own too many of them. My fave, oddly enough, is my Lomography Experimental Fisheye lens. It's plastic and soft as all get out, but I love the lo-fi look I can get with it, and it also has a built-in shutter so you can do in-camera double exposures in bulb mode.
Back in the day I bought 8mm fisheye lens for my Olympus FT camera. However, that lens sucked me in so much that after some time, I wasn't able to make a "normal" wide angle photograph; my job started to suffer from it, so in the end, I was forced to sell it...
I just picked up one of these. I want to compare it to the 16mm Zenitar that I have. I love shooting architecture with the lens and I’m hoping the Tak is equally as good.

This opened my eyes quite a bit... Takumar's, especially this wide were my holy grail as I haven't been able to score anything wider than 28mm (from a decent brand anyway) and I wanted to try fish-eye photography. It's quite a gimmick, I must say, the distortion really limits the scope of what you can do with it. I think something more conservative like 20 to 24mm would do the trick just fine, with way less problems popping up. Thanks for making me want those less badly :P
It's all about informed decisions right? I have the Tak 20 on loan, F4.5 to 16, super close min focus distance and much less distortion. It's pretty cool...you can also mount filters. Fisheye vs a wide though you come to expect different things.
Coloured filters worked magic with black & white film due to they were only sensitive to light in certain parts of the spectra, thus you could use red or yellow filters to separate clouds and the blue sky better, or enhance foliage with green filter separating foliage from flowers. BUT: that is No use on digital, you already have filters, a Bayer filter and UV filter and more on your sensor stack; the only thing you do is to starve the sensor of light, removing even more light from hitting the sensor. Better to work digital media on your computer with an application like Lightroom or whatever you prefer. So coloured filters are for real film, not digital. Very interesting content....I just purchased the Oly 16mm fisheye f/3.5 (using with focal reducer).....your video makes me think lens companies were competing for best fisheye...the switchable filter on the front is the same with the Olympus...
It's a bit of a shame this work is only seen by enthusiasts. These are among the best lens reviews I've seen on this platform, your audience could be so much bigger if you did some modern gear related content like this so you could exploit that SEO a bit more. Half the guys making a living on this platform just talk to you in their room with some lazily shot image examples, this felt like a mini documentary in it's story telling. My compliments.
Cool post, images, and lens, Mark. Beautiful color rendition of lens. Wonder who originated the built in filter design. Thought that was a recent innovation. Good general fisheye tips and crop sensor note. Too easy to mistakenly get one's feet in the frame, and to capture a composition that impreses on its own without the pic screaming out FISHEYE.
Ya I had a few shots where my freaking THUMB was in the frame on the edge of the lens lol. The filter deign is interesting, I want to test that out a bit more, with film especially. Curious to see how it works with the black and white film stock to retain highlighted details or whatever it does. Thanks as always Paul!
@@MarkHoltze trust me! I have a FULL set of pristine Canon FD lenses and would probably buy their fisheye if I found it in mint condition at a good price. It's a lovely addiction, collecting and using vintage lenses.
@@MarkHoltze I think it's the variety and build quality. FD lensee remained mostly unchanged optically from 1971-1987, however, their build design differs dramatically. The classic breech lock lenses are all metal construction tanks and the nFD lenses from the '80s are lightweight plastic lenses that have also held up very well too. The value is tremendous as well. For instance my 135mm f/2.5 S.C. lens cost me $52 and looks like it's fresh out of the box. I've used it multiple times for paid shoots and love it. It's heavy...but beautifully sharp. Current favorites are my nFD 50mm f/1.4 and FD 85mm f/1.8. If you weren't in Canada I would love to lend you some lenses to check out - you just might have an affair from your Takumar lenses! Haha All vintage glass has its own character and that's what I truly love.

I'll admit to having been working on the screen personality. I find it tough to speak to a lens vs having people around. Watch older videos and it's pretty clear lol. Doing it enough I think has helped me find some confidence in it I think. Appreciate the kind words mate, what tak's are you currently hunting?
Currently in pursuit of your favorite SupTak 85 F1.8/F1.9 and a 135 F2.5 down the line. I hunted a 35mm F2 and its been a workhorse of mine on the Fuji XT3 with a Zhongyi speedbooster to give it back some length and light. Ive also been using the Tak 28mm F3.5 alot as well just for walk around.
I was starting to think I was done buying vintage lenses until I started to research this one. I just dropped almost $400 (with shipping and tax) on the SMC version from Japan. So far the only Takumar that has disappointed me was the 35mm f3.5 that I bought by mistake. I hope at this price I'm not disappointed by this copy. Meanwhile, I think of nothing of spending $2000 on a modern lens, but almost $400 is still hard to take for a 1970's make. Hope I don't regret it.... although resell on a vintage is better than on a brand new Canon L lens. My Takumar collection so far: 17mm SMC (ordered, not yet received) - Super Expensive, HOLY SHIT. 24mm 3.5 - Decent, but color render not as good - rare 28mm 3.5 (ordered, not yet received) 35mm 3.5 - Not the best, ordered by mistake 35mm 2.0 - Awesome! Maybe my favorite 50mm 1.4 - Super! - Radioactive, (oh my!) 50mm 4.0 - Macro - This is the rare 1:1 version - haven't had much time to use it yet but it seems pretty great 85mm 1.8 (ordered, not delivered) 135mm 2.5 (ordered, not delivered) I never thought I would sink that much into 50-60 year old lenses, but there it is
I had two sample shots of that tree stump in there, but ya I didn't take many with it. It's mean to work with B&W film stock to really showcase what it's capable of. Retaining details in the cloud and sky so film doesn't blow out when exposing for the subject etc. To properly test them I need to shoot some B&W film with it. Which I totally plan on doing ;)
Wow I picked this lens up as a collectors item too. I love the takumars so much. Two questions, what is your favorite tak in your collection? Do you have anymore you want to try to acquire?
Fav tak right now is my 85mm F1.8. It's not my most used, but it is my favorite. :) Not sure what other ones to acquire at this point, I feel I have the focal length pretty well covered, but NEVER say NEVER. I have a Tak 20 4.5 that's modded for cine that's part of a set I'm testing. It's INTERESTING! Nice and wide, way less distortion vs this one.
Mark Holtze Whoa that 20mm sounds cool. Any videos on that? I have a 24mm 3.5 I believe. It’s sees a lot of use. The 85mm is on my bucket list. I see a couple different versions floating around on eBay. I am looking for the one that can meter without stopping down on the Spotmatic F slr. Pricing is a little high so I’m waiting for a good deal. The takumar that I have always wanted to try is the rare SMC 15mm 3.5 aspherical lens. This one was designed by Zeiss and just looks super rad. It fetched crazy $$$$ on eBay though since it’s not common.

It's nice to have some sort of story to bury into the review, most of what makes these lenses and photography great in general is capturing moments, sterile comparison tests are cool, but I like being able to have a bit of both. Glad you enjoyed it mate!
Biggest difference is coatings my friend. The SMC is the newer version, with updates coatings. If I get a regular fisheye I might show some comparisons between the two but it think flaring and contrast levels will be the biggest differences having looked at super takumars vs SMC’s in the past

I don't own a fisheye as I have never needed one for work, but you have illustrated a variety of great uses for a fisheye. Maybe a good second hand old one like your Takumar is a good alternative. You could for sure. I would make sure you're comfortable shooting with them and manual focus of course. I shoot almost all my videos with ONLY vintage lenses so you can see what they do. The talking head portions are the only shots I don't use vintage because I'm relying on auto F to keep me sharp. ALL of my broll are vintage, part of me talking about them is showing how they can be used to shoot nice looking images. I would go for a 50 1.4 SMC takumar works nice. Something that's versatile, light and fast.

I found a beautiful copy of this lens recently for my Spotmatic and after seeing this video I was excited to try it out on my DSLR, I'm using a Nikon D810 and I got a simple fotodiox m42 - Nikon F mount adapter but the lens won't focus, I see here you've been able to mount yours on a Sony mirrorless without focus issues, is there a way to mount this lens on a Nikon body for use or would I need to pick up a Sony body to use it on a DSLR? Great channel, I'm enjoying the content as I explore vintage lenses and cameras.
Hey Mark! Great vid as always. I've been holding off asking to get your long-term take on it... after about 1.5 years since making the vid, are you still a fan of the Tak Fisheye? I really like ultrawides, and I used to have the Canon 15mm f/2.8, but it was a bit too wide for how I do landscapes. This one seems to not curve quite as much with the 2mm less vs the Canon, so it might be a good fit. What do you think?
i think you did good but you didnt fully capture the wackiness and flavor you can put into photos. Im assuming thats not your main focus or even something you havee had a alot of experience with but i pretty much shoot exclusively in fisheye lenses and you can get some REALLLY unique and cool looking photos. that one with the cow statue and buildings is a great example of somethings you can achieve. skate videos and photography are great examples of things you can do with fisheye lenses.
I got a guy offering to trade me a Zuiko 24mm 2.0, which I can find much information on, for a lens I really never even use. He's actually offering that lens plus a Yashica 50mm 1.4 ML and Yashica 35mm 2.8. 3 lenses for my one lens. Any opinions. I would most likely put an EF adaptor on it and use it on a MFT BMPCC4k with or with out speed booster. I have seen a couple of 24mm 2.0 on eBay for 300-400 dollars.
Hey Gavin, I don't have any personal experience with a reducer, but lots of people on crop sensors are using them and happy. On a crop this could make a decent regular wide angle, but with the reducer you'll be getting that fisheye look.
@@MarkHoltze I sold my Sigma 24mm f1.4 about a year ago and frankly haven't missed it. Instead I bought a 16-35 f4 zoom and was given a 28mm f2.8 rokkor-x for free.
There are some popular 16mm (non fisheye). Contax Carl Zeiss, Canon FD I believe have some options. They're not cheap though. Wide angle lenses back in 35mm days weren't super available, and you paid a price back then as you do today for that. It can be done though, probably lots I don't know about, definitely google it. see what you find.
Thanks! Some lenses are better at it than others, but all lenses modern and vintage can suffer from them. They tend to get ugly in high contrast conditions, like bright sky against dark subject. Picture a forest on a bright sunny day pointing the camera up...those conditions are like CA territory for sure. You can curb it by taking the location surroundings/lighting etc into account when taking a photo. Worst case you can use your software "remove chromatic aberrations" to curb it a bit. Hope that helps!

Can this focus to infinity using hyperfocus at F8 when using a M42 on a Nikon F mount SLR? I know M42 lenses don't focus to infinity when mounted on a Nikon camera but was wondering if the giant depth of field would remedy this.

It’s referred everywhere as a red filter. It looks orange for sure, not sure why they call it a red one. For BW shooting and it’s got to do with removing certain spectrums for different kinds of exposures.
@@MarkHoltze the "O" in O56 stands for orange. Yes it does share use case with Red filters but is most certainly orange. True Red filters have a "R" as their first character the same way that yellow has "Y". This is true for most filter manufacturers and is most definitely true for my set of Nikon Filters per Nikon's chart.

This lens is a bit too wide for some movie stuff, cant' be rigged with follow focus or any filters, but it can still be done. It might be a good idea to do a break down though either way. Good idea mate, thanks.

There is a small lens hood buildt in to allows to take fotos throug a window by leaning the hood to the window glas. Further the wilter ring is more protected against missalignments.
I use it quite often als a Super-WIdwangel lens on my Pentax K1 because it is so small that it allways fits to the camera bag. With PT-Lens it is easy to correct the destortion in postprocessing.
Dude, those astro-shots are killer! I have an older PL1 with the IR filter removed that would be amazing with this. If you did a day shot with the IR camera, snapped the trees, landscape and vegetation, then shop in the sky shot from the same position later than night.... Now I want a fish eye..so many lenses, but only a small camera bag.....

I cant wait to see more vintage lenses from you.I think I suffer from lens acquisition syndrome. I bought an Olympus 0M 80-200mm F4.5, a Tamron 70-150mm F3.5 FD fit, a Pentacon 135mm F2.8 M42 and a Canon FD 28mm F2.8 and all from used items shops and a heritage centre very recently. Shopping for vintage lenses in real life rather than online is more exciting.

Ya I had no idea and I was like what are these numbers. UV flirter on the main lens. I guess they did that because you can’t really mount any additional filters on it.

This lens dates from a time before the later computer designs and ED glass enables rectilinear lenses in below 18mm universe. (Exception: Zeiss Hologon, which is cat of a different style.) Now perfectly reasonable ultra-wides are made with zooms. Pentax made about the same in 35mm for the Pentax 67 system, which I have. On this MF lens, you get about the same type of imaging, plus you can attach gel filters at the rear as well as the included dial-in filters. For many years I looked at this type of lens as a gimmick with little real use. Having actually used mine, I find that it makes you think about how it can be used to make non-trick photos, and that can be very educational. I do a lot of landscapes, and you quickly realize that there are many such scenes with no straight lines to manage, so it can work well if a super wide angle is required. The first time I used the lens, I took a straight up shot and had to squat on the ground to not get into the picture. Filters are not a significant issue. The built-ins are more than adequate for B&W. For color, the most used filter is a polarizer, and where the lens has nearly a 180 degree angle, a polarizer is more than useless.
Superb review. Takumar pixie dust makes images that pop and have magical plasticity. Yours is the only review I have seen of this lens and it looks just fine!

If you ever get into the K mount pentax lenses, for sure look for a k 28mm 3.5. It's a unique optical design that is both different from the takumar predecessor and the following pentax M version. It was only made between 1976-77 so it can be hard to come by, but if you find a sub 100 dollar copy, I highly recommend it! It's one of the few lenses on the Pentax Forum where every photo shared looks fantastic. Also look at the review on Phillip Reeves website. You would not be disappointed.

Not weird but wide and wonderful. When choosing Pentax lenses ALWAYS go for SMC super multicoated Takumar’s. Much less flare, more color saturation and contrast.

Great video Mark! I love fisheye lenses and own too many of them. My fave, oddly enough, is my Lomography Experimental Fisheye lens. It's plastic and soft as all get out, but I love the lo-fi look I can get with it, and it also has a built-in shutter so you can do in-camera double exposures in bulb mode.

Back in the day I bought 8mm fisheye lens for my Olympus FT camera. However, that lens sucked me in so much that after some time, I wasn't able to make a "normal" wide angle photograph; my job started to suffer from it, so in the end, I was forced to sell it...

This opened my eyes quite a bit... Takumar's, especially this wide were my holy grail as I haven't been able to score anything wider than 28mm (from a decent brand anyway) and I wanted to try fish-eye photography.
It's quite a gimmick, I must say, the distortion really limits the scope of what you can do with it. I think something more conservative like 20 to 24mm would do the trick just fine, with way less problems popping up. Thanks for making me want those less badly :P
It's all about informed decisions right? I have the Tak 20 on loan, F4.5 to 16, super close min focus distance and much less distortion. It's pretty cool...you can also mount filters.

Coloured filters worked magic with black & white film due to they were only sensitive to light in certain parts of the spectra, thus you could use red or yellow filters to separate clouds and the blue sky better, or enhance foliage with green filter separating foliage from flowers.
BUT: that is No use on digital, you already have filters, a Bayer filter and UV filter and more on your sensor stack; the only thing you do is to starve the sensor of light, removing even more light from hitting the sensor.
Better to work digital media on your computer with an application like Lightroom or whatever you prefer.
So coloured filters are for real film, not digital.
Using coloured filters on your flash and compensating with white balance can give you some neat tricks though.

Very interesting content....I just purchased the Oly 16mm fisheye f/3.5 (using with focal reducer).....your video makes me think lens companies were competing for best fisheye...the switchable filter on the front is the same with the Olympus...
It's a bit of a shame this work is only seen by enthusiasts. These are among the best lens reviews I've seen on this platform, your audience could be so much bigger if you did some modern gear related content like this so you could exploit that SEO a bit more. Half the guys making a living on this platform just talk to you in their room with some lazily shot image examples, this felt like a mini documentary in it's story telling.

Cool post, images, and lens, Mark. Beautiful color rendition of lens. Wonder who originated the built in filter design. Thought that was a recent innovation. Good general fisheye tips and crop sensor note. Too easy to mistakenly get one's feet in the frame, and to capture a composition that impreses on its own without the pic screaming out FISHEYE.
Ya I had a few shots where my freaking THUMB was in the frame on the edge of the lens lol. The filter deign is interesting, I want to test that out a bit more, with film especially. Curious to see how it works with the black and white film stock to retain highlighted details or whatever it does.

@@MarkHoltze I think it's the variety and build quality. FD lensee remained mostly unchanged optically from 1971-1987, however, their build design differs dramatically. The classic breech lock lenses are all metal construction tanks and the nFD lenses from the '80s are lightweight plastic lenses that have also held up very well too. The value is tremendous as well. For instance my 135mm f/2.5 S.C. lens cost me $52 and looks like it's fresh out of the box. I've used it multiple times for paid shoots and love it. It's heavy...but beautifully sharp. Current favorites are my nFD 50mm f/1.4 and FD 85mm f/1.8. If you weren't in Canada I would love to lend you some lenses to check out - you just might have an affair from your Takumar lenses! Haha All vintage glass has its own character and that's what I truly love.

I'll admit to having been working on the screen personality. I find it tough to speak to a lens vs having people around. Watch older videos and it's pretty clear lol. Doing it enough I think has helped me find some confidence in it I think.

Currently in pursuit of your favorite SupTak 85 F1.8/F1.9 and a 135 F2.5 down the line. I hunted a 35mm F2 and its been a workhorse of mine on the Fuji XT3 with a Zhongyi speedbooster to give it back some length and light. Ive also been using the Tak 28mm F3.5 alot as well just for walk around.
I was starting to think I was done buying vintage lenses until I started to research this one. I just dropped almost $400 (with shipping and tax) on the SMC version from Japan. So far the only Takumar that has disappointed me was the 35mm f3.5 that I bought by mistake. I hope at this price I'm not disappointed by this copy.
Meanwhile, I think of nothing of spending $2000 on a modern lens, but almost $400 is still hard to take for a 1970's make. Hope I don't regret it.... although resell on a vintage is better than on a brand new Canon L lens.
My Takumar collection so far:
17mm SMC (ordered, not yet received) - Super Expensive, HOLY SHIT.
24mm 3.5 - Decent, but color render not as good - rare
28mm 3.5 (ordered, not yet received)
35mm 3.5 - Not the best, ordered by mistake
35mm 2.0 - Awesome! Maybe my favorite
50mm 1.4 - Super! - Radioactive, (oh my!)
50mm 4.0 - Macro - This is the rare 1:1 version - haven't had much time to use it yet but it seems pretty great
85mm 1.8 (ordered, not delivered)
135mm 2.5 (ordered, not delivered)
I never thought I would sink that much into 50-60 year old lenses, but there it is

I was waiting to see sample shots using the cool red and yellow filters... How could you resist testing those out?
I had two sample shots of that tree stump in there, but ya I didn't take many with it. It's mean to work with B&W film stock to really showcase what it's capable of. Retaining details in the cloud and sky so film doesn't blow out when exposing for the subject etc.
To properly test them I need to shoot some B&W film with it. Which I totally plan on doing ;)
Wow I picked this lens up as a collectors item too. I love the takumars so much. Two questions, what is your favorite tak in your collection? Do you have anymore you want to try to acquire?
Fav tak right now is my 85mm F1.8. It's not my most used, but it is my favorite. :) Not sure what other ones to acquire at this point, I feel I have the focal length pretty well covered, but NEVER say NEVER.
I have a Tak 20 4.5 that's modded for cine that's part of a set I'm testing. It's INTERESTING! Nice and wide, way less distortion vs this one.
Mark Holtze Whoa that 20mm sounds cool. Any videos on that? I have a 24mm 3.5 I believe. It’s sees a lot of use. The 85mm is on my bucket list. I see a couple different versions floating around on eBay. I am looking for the one that can meter without stopping down on the Spotmatic F slr. Pricing is a little high so I’m waiting for a good deal.
The takumar that I have always wanted to try is the rare SMC 15mm 3.5 aspherical lens. This one was designed by Zeiss and just looks super rad. It fetched crazy $$$$ on eBay though since it’s not common.

Biggest difference is coatings my friend. The SMC is the newer version, with updates coatings. If I get a regular fisheye I might show some comparisons between the two but it think flaring and contrast levels will be the biggest differences having looked at super takumars vs SMC’s in the past

You could for sure. I would make sure you're comfortable shooting with them and manual focus of course. I shoot almost all my videos with ONLY vintage lenses so you can see what they do. The talking head portions are the only shots I don't use vintage because I'm relying on auto F to keep me sharp.
ALL of my broll are vintage, part of me talking about them is showing how they can be used to shoot nice looking images.
I would go for a 50 1.4 SMC takumar works nice. Something that's versatile, light and fast.

I found a beautiful copy of this lens recently for my Spotmatic and after seeing this video I was excited to try it out on my DSLR, I'm using a Nikon D810 and I got a simple fotodiox m42 - Nikon F mount adapter but the lens won't focus, I see here you've been able to mount yours on a Sony mirrorless without focus issues, is there a way to mount this lens on a Nikon body for use or would I need to pick up a Sony body to use it on a DSLR? Great channel, I'm enjoying the content as I explore vintage lenses and cameras.

Hey Mark! Great vid as always. I've been holding off asking to get your long-term take on it... after about 1.5 years since making the vid, are you still a fan of the Tak Fisheye? I really like ultrawides, and I used to have the Canon 15mm f/2.8, but it was a bit too wide for how I do landscapes. This one seems to not curve quite as much with the 2mm less vs the Canon, so it might be a good fit. What do you think?

i think you did good but you didnt fully capture the wackiness and flavor you can put into photos. Im assuming thats not your main focus or even something you havee had a alot of experience with but i pretty much shoot exclusively in fisheye lenses and you can get some REALLLY unique and cool looking photos. that one with the cow statue and buildings is a great example of somethings you can achieve. skate videos and photography are great examples of things you can do with fisheye lenses.
Definitely new territory. Just wanted to showcase the lens performance itself. I’ve gotten a lot better with it, but initially it was a bit tricky.
I got a guy offering to trade me a Zuiko 24mm 2.0, which I can find much information on, for a lens I really never even use. He's actually offering that lens plus a Yashica 50mm 1.4 ML and Yashica 35mm 2.8. 3 lenses for my one lens. Any opinions. I would most likely put an EF adaptor on it and use it on a MFT BMPCC4k with or with out speed booster. I have seen a couple of 24mm 2.0 on eBay for 300-400 dollars.
How about shooting this on an A6000 with a focal reducer? I really have the horn to buy one of these but worry about the crop sensor
Hey Gavin, I don't have any personal experience with a reducer, but lots of people on crop sensors are using them and happy. On a crop this could make a decent regular wide angle, but with the reducer you'll be getting that fisheye look.

There are some popular 16mm (non fisheye). Contax Carl Zeiss, Canon FD I believe have some options. They're not cheap though. Wide angle lenses back in 35mm days weren't super available, and you paid a price back then as you do today for that.
It can be done though, probably lots I don't know about, definitely google it. see what you find.

Thanks! Some lenses are better at it than others, but all lenses modern and vintage can suffer from them. They tend to get ugly in high contrast conditions, like bright sky against dark subject. Picture a forest on a bright sunny day pointing the camera up...those conditions are like CA territory for sure.
You can curb it by taking the location surroundings/lighting etc into account when taking a photo. Worst case you can use your software "remove chromatic aberrations" to curb it a bit.

Can this focus to infinity using hyperfocus at F8 when using a M42 on a Nikon F mount SLR? I know M42 lenses don't focus to infinity when mounted on a Nikon camera but was wondering if the giant depth of field would remedy this.

No problem. Make sure it’s the SMC takumar Fisheye. They have an older Fisheye that’s not “SMC” labelled.

Make those cozy rooms like spacious! ;) 12mm is that on a FF sensor? That's super wide.

O56 is an orange filter. Not a red filter.
It’s referred everywhere as a red filter. It looks orange for sure, not sure why they call it a red one. For BW shooting and it’s got to do with removing certain spectrums for different kinds of exposures.
@@MarkHoltze the "O" in O56 stands for orange. Yes it does share use case with Red filters but is most certainly orange. True Red filters have a "R" as their first character the same way that yellow has "Y". This is true for most filter manufacturers and is most definitely true for my set of Nikon Filters per Nikon's chart.

This lens is a bit too wide for some movie stuff, cant' be rigged with follow focus or any filters, but it can still be done. It might be a good idea to do a break down though either way.
