Normally I cringe at silent how-to videos, but this one is the clearest and most informative on how to install this belt in a Ford Fiesta. I know, he "cheated" by demonstrating on an engine removed from the car. But that is why it is so good. The camera is in a place where you can actually see each step and how it is done. The "real world" engine-in-car videos fail to do that. Often real life has to be altered to create an effective video.

Just a tip because I struggled on 2 occasions with this belt - both times I had the wrong belt. They were both 1.4 Fiesta belts but I was given the wrong ones. Triple check the size as there are Fiestas that could be the same year as yours and the same engine capacity so work on the engine code. For example the M6JAxxxx engine takes a 6PK1037 belt and there are other similar engines that take a 1019mm belt. Also take the drivers wheel off on a RHD and remove the plastic cover and you will have perfect access ( no need to remove the engine lol ). Make sure the belt as a EE on the end if its Dayco or says stretch on it because a stretch belt will shrink back to spec once it gets heated by the engine. Dnt try to heat it like I tried as that makes the belt smaller ironically. Anyway this is a super frustrating job if you dnt do it right ( you might get lucky using cable ties though instead of the special tool. It is an easy job but mechanics charge so much. The Ford belt here in South Africa costs just over 5 times more than the Dayco and other decent belts.

I loosen the lower screw of the alternator, then the two top ones, I pass the belt, and then I return the two top screws and tighten the bottom one, without tools, and much simpler, thanks from Brazil

Here's a way of fitting the water pump stretch belt on a Ford Fiesta or Focus without using specialist tools, especially when the vehicle has Air Con.
First remove 3 of the 4 water pump bolts. Then loosen the last bolt just enough so the pulley can be twisted off the water pump central locator . Fit the new stretch belt onto all the pulleys leaving the water pump pulley til last. If the belt seems too small to go onto the water pump pulley turn the pulley so it pivot on the remaining bolt until the belt goes on (if at this point the belt will still not go onto the water pump pulley check it's fitted correctly onto the other pulleys or check the belt is the correct size).
With the belt fitted onto all the pulleys turn the water pump pulley until the position of the remaining bolt is at 1 o'clock. Now first make sure you have a 10mm spanner within reaching distance, then using a pry bar or long screw driver lever the water pump pulley using the crank pulley as a rest until it twists back onto the water pump central locator now tighten the one water pump pulley bolt. If the pulley's on correctly the 3 removed bolts will screw back in easily.
Hope this helps. It did for me and was a lot less stressful than even refitting the belt with the correct tools.

I need to replace the belt on our ka+ (snapped today!) I also thought it would be better to fit the belt to the ribbed pulleys first and slide the smooth side of the belt onto the water pump pulley - makes more sense as there's more danger of damaging the belt when moving it across a ribbed pulley. I'd thought about making a steel 'guide' which could be attached to 2 of the bolts on the water pump to move the belt as the pulleys are turned. Your idea is good though, so I may well try it

Trying that in chassis would be extremely difficult. A brand new belt will come with the tools shown in the video, even parts store belts come with the tools. If you don't have the tool to install it, it may be worth the money just to replace the belt and thus acquiring the tools to put it on damage and stress free.

So this would come down to manufacturers trying to save a bit of money by eliminating the tensioner? What happens when the belt stretches? Go and by a new belt? Metal parts crack and dent and rust, it's that we're flying too close to the sun with our technology. You can make a plastic fantastic car that's simple and will run nicely, it's been done. The problem is these new breed of cars are all meant to be cheap to make, while still being "fancy" and adhere to government rules. It makes designing a no nonsense car almost impossible, and with corporate execs wanting higher profits vehicle sales are "not enough" so they design things carelessly because they would prefer to work on the car and make that money on service.
It's all corporate and consumer driven. It's unlikely to change.

As long as you have the service kit, this looks like a better design. How many cars do you hear with squealing belts all the time? With a stretch belt in proper condition, the tension will always be perfectly set! And the service tool holds the belt for you against its own tension so it doesn’t slip off. Trying to line a belt up with one arm on the tensioner was a bitch for me on my 2000 Focus. I wasn’t able to remove the passenger side engine mount so it took me over an hour to change that belt. I’ve got a fiesta now, so hopefully the kit is not expensive. I think this will be a lot easier.

I just bought a fiesta and realized it has a “stretch belt”. I’ve always done my own belts and I’m not familiar with this. There’s no tensioner? Are those special service tools really required to get a stretch belt on correctly, or at least without ingenuity? Not sure what was wrong with spring loaded tensioners to begin with. These stretch belts aren’t reusable are they? Once it’s off, it’s off for good?

    • @flmmaz

The belt can be put on without special tools. If you buy a decent belt like from the dealer, it will come with all the items shown to install the belt with ease. You can remove the belt without damaging it and reinstall it. I simply cut this belt off because it was no good and hence did not need to fool around with proper removal.

It's actually a great design eliminating the need for tensioners or extra pullies that could possibly fail. It's down fall being that you have to cut off the belt If you need to remove it.

Not really! You can remove the water pump pulley and the belt will come loose enough to take off and re-install it later. I'm a German Car mechanic for 45 years and have never seen anything that stupid! Ruined 2 belt before I managed on the 3rd. try by having to modify the "Tool" somewhat to crap on to the crank pulley while turning.

Why can’t ford just use a self tensioner so much more easier, stretch belts are a paint in the ass to fit when engine on the car, this is easier as on the bench

It's not just Ford but all manufacturers. Stretchy belts are such a stupid idea. In older cars I just had a spare belt in my glovebox and the fitting tool to release the tension, usually one spanner.

you don't even need that tool. bc most diy'ers aren't going to have that shoe horn looking tool. i got stuck and inventive used a small vise grip clamping belt to crank pulley and spinning it and with other hand kept belt from walking off from under the water pump pulley. check my vid out to see what tools.

Brilliant! is Ford devolving? a matter of tensioner they cannot incorporate.

8788luigi they had to figure out something after their engineer's left out tensioner when they designed that motor lol. I'm shocked that they don't have a dealer only part type belt and has belt holes and a buckle like on our pants 😂😂😂😂😂

You can damage the belt using that method so be careful. Admittedly i have also used similar method (zip tie) but u do need to be careful.

¿¿¿Y todo esto con el motor montado???. "Enga Ya" Estos ingenieros estan "to" Fumao. ¿Tan caro es un tensor?

Hello, good morning, I am a follower of your channel and I am contacting you, to be able to comment on the following situation that occurs in my vehicle, Ford mondeo mk2 2.5 v6, one morning the battery was discharged, without knowing how to change the battery, when month or so, the car stopped in full operation, it was as if the electricity had died, stop, giving it and giving it until it started, again as if the battery was without charge, it was only a month old, I changed the alternator regulator , and well, I bought it, it charges over 14.5V, and I considered the fault finished, one day cleaning the interior, I left the radio on, while I cleaned, and nothing a few minutes later, the voltage began to drop, less to less, until the battery was discharged at that moment, I was surprised because that had never happened to him, I did another test, with the battery charged again, I gave the contact, after a short time, equal to less to less , that in a moment the battery goes away, I recharge it, install it, and leave it and connected approximately 2 months, until I realized that the red light of the alarm did not blink, I checked it and discharged, that did not happen in the past either, it carried out the current leakage test with the multimeter, because I told myself that this would have to be a current leak, it is the logical thing to think, and what was my surprise, that the value it gave is 0.02 amps, with the battery just charged, so there is no current leak, I have also performed the voltage drop test and it gives 000v both positive and negative, and then what happens to it? I don't even know what else to do, regarding what I am explaining to you, I await your prompt clarification, please, greetings.
