    Another fantastic episode, Graham. I love that the cover led you down the rabbit hole of the story of Sinbad. It is the magic of this hobby. It starts from one point and can diverge off on many paths if we just take time to explore what is in front of us. It is a wonderful education.

      It really is wonderful! Learning about Sinbad was my favorite thing about making this episode. I plan on visiting his memorial which is by a lighthouse in New Jersey where he used to sit and watch the ocean during his last years. The tangent stories give endless joy to the hobby. 😊

    Great episode! I have 13 stamps from Greenland. I had the idea when I was kid in 1988 to send a mail to a fake address in Greenland, just to get a postmark from there. And it worked !

      I followed a whim based on a stamp and got (1) a letter from the "Pitcairn High Commissioner," located in New Zealand. Then, following that information, got a letter from Pitcairn Island.

    Great episode that summarized Greenland Philately very nicely. I collect topical stamps for dogsledding, polar exploration, and canoes. I started noticing lots of Greenland stamps - this led me to discover the engraver Czeslaw Slania - what beautiful stamps he made for Greenland! So I decided to focus/collect Greenland. I have quite a few now, and this episode made more excited to continue my collection. Thanks!

    Polar bears are a great subject for Greenland stamps. Another great commemorative stamp subject for Greenland would be the ice cording projects including the well noted Greenland Ice Core Project that ran from 1989 to 1995. This ice cord project along with other Greenlandic ice cord efforts, have yielded data about the earth going back as much as 123,000 years. This is a great achievement in humans' pursuit of science knowleadge. Greenland can be proud of this and boast about it on a stamp series.

  • @Catfinks
    @Catfinks Před rokem +4

    Ahh you missed the Rockwell Kent airmail stamp, such a fantastic rarity with a great history, similar to the Thule issues it’s more akin to a label, only 400 were printed from a woodblock. You can find copies signed by Rockwell himself.
    The 1922 ivigtut mining issue is interesting too since no consensus can be made as to whether it’s original or a later fantasy
    If you want more info on Thule issues the Eric Wowern catalogue has a full plating guide and detailings on how to tell whether the cancellations were Greenlandic or Danish (the way to compare genuine usage vs philatelic usage), the Greenland postal history society also realised the most amazingly detailed book on it
    Greenland is such a good country to collect because it has the cheapest specialised catalogue of any country it’s only $3 per volume!!

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  Před rokem +1

      Interesting!! I didn't actually come across the Rockwell Kent airmail stamp while reading up about Greenland, Looking it up now!!! It just shows that there is so much more to talk about and explore with Greenland's philately.

    Great story about Greenland philately! I also just have a few stamps from Greenland before their post was moved to Denmark. One thing I noticed, like you, since they allow anyone to vote each year on the most beautiful stamp is just how beautiful and artistic all their stamps appear. Light on Greenland stamps...I have 13 and 2 Thule, one of which I expanded upon on my Philatelic Hystoria in one of My Mountain Stamps tweets…very interesting history indeed. I did order a few from Nordfrim out of Denmark (and they, too give a packet of a few stamps because they can't put them on international shipping), but need to build this meager collection. Thanks for another great video to learn new things from!

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  Před rokem +1

      Yeah and someone else here in the comments mentioned that Nordfrim may actually be the manager of the postal’s service’s philatelic shipments and supplies… so that would make sense seeing that you had a similar experience ordering from Nordfrim. 🤔

    • @roger0929
      @roger0929 Před rokem

      Well, they could use stamps if they used PostNord rather than DHL/Deutsche Post but they'd rather save a penny than cater to philatelists.

  • @olivermiller2013

    Greenland is for me an undeveloped stamp country. I have some of them, but nothing of importance except the Thule set. One cancelled and the other mint which was in a collection with Russian stamps. I know the Pakket Post stamps are rare and seldom as you said in your video. I can remember that I had some, but in a more poor condition and I do not know where they are to be honest. I never saw a letter from Greenland which was used for postage.
    I liked your letter from 1940 a lot, this is interesting history. And I assume very difficult to find. With 60.000 people there are for sure not many existing letters from Greenland overall. This is a very exotic country and I can understand, that some people like to collect these stamps. Or people with a faible for polar bears. Whitney Houston as polar bear is great 😄

    Just a couple of days ago, I had soaked some of my Danish stamps , and to now store them in the binder loose leaf album. I do have a few Gronland stamps that I have to look up and learn from, and post on my social media. Appreciate another enriching post on a lesser known philatelic country, and the story on Sinbad - the Doggo is fascinating. On dogs, kindly note International Dog Day is coming up on August 26 and you could do a post. Phil Post are planning to issue a set of 8 dog stamps, a day prior. And you might like to know that International cat Day is on august 8. May be, you could do dedicated day posts on these two days.

    Great video!
    On another subject I read an article on the problem of China counterfeiting US stamps.
    Any letter found by the post office with counterfeit postage will be destroyed.

    I think your Deutsche Post envelope is really a DHL package. Somehow the two operate in conjunction with each other so now one gets Deutsche Post items emanating from other European countries.

      Ohhh see that does make sense, I have been wondering why and how it is a Deutche Post label when the envelope shipped from Denmark… super confusing

      Deutsche Post is DHL. They are one company.

      @@ExploringStamps the Baseball Hall of Fame is in upstate New York as well. The USPS also issued stamps of old baseball stadiums. I'm sure you have also been to the Smithsonian Postal Museum; that would be another great resource.

    Is there any other territory that was settled (colonized, invaded, occupied, conquered, or likewise) by Europeans (or any other group) that took on the language of the indigenous population as the official language? This should be commemorated on a stamp.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  Před rokem

      GREAT question, the story of the language is incredible. If there is another example of this, I’d love to know.

    • @roger0929
      @roger0929 Před rokem +1

      South Africa has nine indigenous languages as official languages in addition to English and Afrikaans as do many other countries. Not to mention all of the former Soviet republics that were occupied by ethnic Russians and the former Yugoslavian countries that were occupied by Serbians.
