The STUPIDEST CBS BROADCASTING STATION in NFL HISTORY | Jets @ Giants (1999)

- In 1999, the CBS affiliate in Bangor, Maine, WABI, aired the wrong NFL game, as instead of airing the game between the New York Giants and New York Jets like they were supposed to, they aired a completely different game between the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins. And the crazy part is that this wasn't even the first such mistake that the station made in the past week. This is the story behind the 1999 NFL season, and how it was nothing short of chaos up in Maine for CBS

“Maine” event, I see what you did there.
I was stationed in Winter Harbor, Maine. It’s along the coast of Maine. As I recall we got the Bangor stations down there at the time.
Fun Fact; CBS also covered Big East football games that year.
In 1981 the NBC affiliate in Buffalo thought their viewers would have preferred seeing a film about life aboard a Naval aircraft carrier than watch what other NBC viewers around the country were watching, which was Nolan Ryan‘s record fifth no-hitter.

Something like this happened to the CBS (I believe) affiliate in Dallas. We were supposed to get game 1 of the NBA Western Conference semi final between the Mavericks and the Lakers. Instead we got game 5 of an opening round series. The sad part was the game 5 was a better game.
If I had a nickel every time this happened, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't much but it's weird it's happened twice.

@@bruin730 An absolutely correct observation.
My theory is: this program director figured so many people had new cars after last week’s car loan infomercial that they all drove to NY to attend the Jets-Giants game.
This is incredible
Should get a video about this past season when Hattiesburg, Miss., a city with a local station that shows the Saints preseason games and has always aired Saints games got a Cowboys game on FOX at the same time a Saints game was also being played on FOX.
as someone who grew up with Bangor stations....the NBC affiliate was even *worse* at showing network sports in the 90s. They pre-empted NBA and Notre Dame games for movies on an almost weekly basis.
Back in the 70s or eighties the CBS station in Atlanta wouldn't air the NBA despite the fact that Atlanta was an NBA city.
This is like the reverse of that Chargers/Raiders and Dolphins/Bills 1975 scenario you did a video on
Tweed Jacket Alert!
I lived in Augusta which is considered central Maine, and we had 2 CBS affiliates, this station and channel 13 from Portland. Usually a couple times a season, they would show different games in the 1pm slot if the Patriots were on Fox or playing one of the 8pm games. So that meant 3 different games to flip through. It was pretty cool!
1:55 I was NOT expecting to see FLYING RHINO JUNIOR HIGH to be referenced in the B-Roll😂 I grew up watching that as a kid
😂 I must confess I would have been pissed too!
There is no network programming (usually) on Saturdays from 7 to 8 P.M. EDT/EST.
Most of the time, a college football game starting at 3:35 P.M. ET ends by 7 P.M. ET, so WABI could carry local news at 7 P.M. on Saturdays during college football season.
Yes, the news would be on an hour later than on most other nights of the week, but there would be an early evening local newscast.
At least here in the Northeast ie NYC and Philadelphia markets the CBS and ABC stations for years for a 335pm kickoff would show their 6pm Saturday evening news as soon as the game ended around 705pm.
In recent years though ABC now has a triple header with games at 12pm, 4pm and 8pm so the 6pm Saturday newscasts are now basically cancelled from Labor Day Weekend until Thanksgiving weekend. Or the 6pm Saturday evening news is shown on the sub channel on digital cable in larger markets as well.
In Pittsburgh, PA, the CBS affiliate (KDKA) airs a 7 pm newscast on Saturday evenings year-round.
@@drewzuhosky6826 KDKA is a CBS O&O, and same with WCBS-TV in NY and KYW-TV in Philadelphia. They are ordered to air the programs per ot the network lineup..

Another excellent video. I didn’t know that this happened
Speaking as someone who lives in an area with no real local connection to any team, I want to see the best game available, not a game with 2 mediocre teams, one of which the powers that be designated as "our" team. So, if I lived in Bangor at the time and this happened, my reaction would be one of pleasant surprise.
As a resident of Maine, where most people are Pats fans, I would expect to see the AFC East game over a Giants game, even though there are a number of Giants fans here. But they advertised the Giants game, so...
Reminds me of that time KXLT (Rochester MN) aired a Yankees-Red Sox game, pissing off viewers south of the state line but still within their territory were expecting to watch Hawkeyes vs Cyclones. Iowans ripped into them on social media and they fixed their mistake... by the middle of the 2nd quarter.
That WAS the mistake. Red Sox vs. Yankees always outranked any football game.
Hi, Bangorian here. Very interesting video. Again, thank you for saying "Bangor" correctly.
Its also interesting that the main team here in Bangor was once the Giants, as I grew up during The Brady Era and New England Patriots became the main team. They even visted us after they won the Super Bowl in 2002
The Jets made the 1998 playoffs while the Giants missed by one game which should have made this game MNF material in 1999. There have been several instances of both teams coming off good seasons entering a season in which they are scheduled to meet, but have only ever played in the 1 PM slot. 2011 was a huge missed opportunity to make Giants-Jets SNF on the 9/11 anniversary.
Speaking of, I'd love to see him do a video on the Testaverde Phantom Touchdown!
On the bright side, at least the second time around it wasn't an infomercial 😑
The SEC on CBS theme is the best college football theme music.
Yeah, but nothing beats Keith Jackson’s voice. Hearing him means it’s college football time!
I remember a similar situation in 2013. WTOL, the CBS affiliate in Toledo was supposed to air Browns at Bengals (an obvious choice). For some reason, they ended up showing Ravens at Bears. There ended up being a back and forth between the affiliate and the network blaming each other for the screw up. Needless to say, Browns fans were royally pissed.
I'm sure watching the Ravens felt, like, piling on, at that point, like, they had committed some, truly, terrible crime.

I Don't think anyone really considers Tennessee-Vanderbilt a great rivalry
Vandy fans probably consider it to be a "great rivalry"...but they would be the only ones.
That Vanderbilt was 5-5 and needed just one more win to be bowl eligible testifies to how little meaning most bowls have.
I feel for giants fans. If I turned on the TV to watch the Raiders and I got a KC Chiefs - Denver Broncos game I'd be enraged! I don't care if the Raiders game is a blowout where the Raiders win 55 to 00, and the game actually shown was more entertaining and had several lead changes I would still be ticked off. If it's your teams day and time slot you don't want to watch any other game, infact I find the Raiders getting a blowout win the most enjoyable kind of game.
Especially if it was printed right there that your station would be showing such and such a game right on page 2 of the sports part (that's where the TV sports listings for a day are usually printed, IIRC; they are also printed in the TV guide section in Sunday papers that still have TV guide sections), and you get your beer and snacks ready to see the game that you were told you were gonna see, and then they don't show that one-- I would go bonkers!
If only there was an easy way to make it less awkward for TV stations in lower California and Baja California to show games at the 10 am PST slot, even sucktacular ones, instead of informercials or showbiz shows on Sundays.
You can guess which you get to see on TV some Sundays in my area.
Luckily, WCBS-TV (channel 2) in NYC did ran a NFL game with the Jets & Giants played instead of a Colts & Dolphins game.
I love these videos about the networks messing up their broadcasts.
You know, at least it was an actual football game instead of an infomercial the second time around
My understanding regarding Jets/Giants broadcasts is that one network shows one game at 1, the other at 4:15?
That program director should have been fired. Plus if I were the station manager of that station I would tell the program director, you are showing college football at 3:30pm pm and the heck with the news.

I thought Bangor, Maine would get every New England Patriots game on local television.
But the Patriots played that week on Sunday night.
But there are still several TV markets in outlying areas of New England where all or almost all New York Giants games are broadcast on local television. Maybe Bangor is among them.
Normally yes they would unless either an NFC team was in town which the game would be on FOX or if they were playing later that night or on Monday Night. Via ESPN or ABC respectively. In this case since The Jets were playing the Giants, it was supposed to be on CBS in that market. Like you said the Patriots were playing later that night, so that's why the Giants and Jets were supposed to be the CBS game. Otherwise it would had mostly been the Patriots for CBS and Giants for FOX.
got to see drew bledsoe and pats beat aikman and boys in a 13-6 borefest.
I’ve lived in Augusta, Maine since the year of this game. Any station in Maine that can show a Patriots game always will. The Patriots are the clear #1 team throughout the state (as opposed to, say, Connecticut, where the NY teams make inroads). But the Giants have long been the second favorite here, and were #1 here for many, many years until the Patriots came in 1960. And even then, it took a while for the Pats to catch up. The Giants were popular in Maine in 1959. That’s what brought the Giants-Packers preseason game here. (I believe that was also Vince Lombardi’s first game coaching my beloved Packers). If you run into a football fan in Maine over 70, there’s a decent chance he or she is a Giants fan.
My guess is CBS figured that since Bangor is closer to Foxborough, they should get the intradivision AFC East matchup of the Patriot's rivals.
Though I do have one, tangentially related question, which I've wondered for years, when two teams that share a stadium play each other, does the "road" team have to use the road locker rooms, or can they use their regular one (assuming that both home teams have separate rooms)?
Love your under statement at reaction jg9
I never realized Vanderjagt wore #12 while with Indy. I've been a Colts fan almost my entire life and never knew about that until this video. In real time when this happened, I was just barely a year old and my first season I saw them play constantly was in 2002.

14:30 - Bangor is also the smallest Designated Market Area in mainland (I think it's in the 200s.) It's next to Alaska/
But there is another DMA, that is Portland (DMA is in the 70s) there is a CBS Affiliate, WGME. The Portland DMA covers more of the state's populous as well the North eastern NH counties. I thought Maine was a Patriots market as all the Boston teams have the six state fanbase, and the Sox and Bruins also have radio affiliates as well.
Also there are other towns and cities nearby with a small population. Most of those Mainers choose to live off the grid, and they aren't into sports, which may explain why the so called "program director" may had lead to that call. I use that in quotation marks because those jobs were not common in TV, obviously in radio, as affiliation agreements demanded they limit pre-emptitons unlike the 80s and priorto.
I don't know who owned WABI at the time, but I don't think that PD was working for a large "company", it's either Nexstar or Gray today, but I would wondered if that guy would've lost his job because of consolidation.
You must be thinking Presque Isle... Bangor is ranked somewhere around 160th. The smallest DMA in the mainland US is Glendive, Montana. Portland is 78th I think. WABI could have just run the newscast after college football. I know they have been #1 up there for years for news..... but still... can't think the network would be happy of an affiliate not clearing college football.
Monroe Louisiana never had this problem!
Wouldn’t the program director have been arrested for false advertising. False advertising is against the law.

Going from program director to creative services director? That actually sounds like a DE-motion to me. Don't creative directors (and I know this is a small-market station) have responsibility over the graphics and set design? Locally produced commercial spots? Sounds like LESS responsibility, not more.
Sounds, more, like, a case of, termination equals severance, demotion equals shame, equals resignation, though, who can explain any thought process, currently.
Given there was a such-thing a PD, perhaps the PD position is eliminated, and the CSD (and you're right with responsibilities... but you have to get same day promos and other stuff out to air, which requires some involvement with traffic or master control ironically or the "program director") was probably the only available position to apply.

Until 1970, every game of the New York Giants could be televised in Boston, even though it was home of the Patriots (then if the American Football League).
For many years after 1979, Boston got every every Giants game that could be televised into that city (unless it was being played at the sane time as a Patriots home game, in which case the Giants game could not be fed into Boston as the Pats' home game would be the only game televised in that window).
Even still, all but a couple of Giants' games were televised in Boston each year.
After former New England quarterback Tom Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, all but s couple Buccaneers' games in each of the last two seasons (2020 and 2021) have been shown in Boston. Again, the exception has been Buccaneers games being played at the same hour as a Patriots' home game.
With Brady deciding to delay his retirement and play one more year, Boston viewers will likely get between 13 and 15 Buccaneers games on local TV in 2022, again depending on the NFL schedule (again, as no out-of-town game, except for Week 18, can be televised at the same time as the local team is at home).
The Rams proved that even, The, Football Gods, Have, Turned Their Backs, On, Tom Brady, he will play, for, two, more, years, but, no, more, SBs.

As someone that has only been to Portland/Southern Maine, a couple of times, I am suprised Bangor even has a network affiliate. I always thought that the Portland news stations was shown for the entire state.
Anyhow could not that local CBS affiliate in Bangor on late Saturday afternoon/early evening just have shown their 6pm newscast be on an independent or even a Fox station in that area? This is 1999 (and not say 1980) so I am sure the independent station in the Bangor area would have been happy with a nice free and fresh “live” programming since they likely did not even have a local newscast. And show the SEC or any college game that CBS was showing starting in the 330pm window.
It's probably like in NJ. South Jersey is covered under the Philadelphia metro area however there is a NBC affiliate in Wildwood(channel 40) and on rare occasions they would show a different game than channel 3(the NBC affiliate at the time. It's the CBS affiliate now) because it was out of the 50 mile radius of Philly.

A few thoughts:
Bangor is 130 miles away from Portland and up to the interior a bit. They should get at least one network that will cover local news. I don't think the average antenna can get 130 miles in clear channel. Once in a while I could get Philadelphia (118 miles from me) in very snowy, never clear channel. The Bangor area has different affairs than the Portland area market. Mind you, Portland, Maine TV carries into Conway, NH (not too far from Mount Washington), so the cover mandate even there is different for news and such. TV is funny in a way.
1999 didn't have the digital networks like Ch. 5.2 that they could have put the news on like they do now. I am not sure if they had a "sister station" that they could have put the same people on and it be almost normal. The NYC CBS does with WLNY out of Long Island, but that I believe is an exception.
Ch. 69 in Allentown is a Fox affiliate (WFMZ), they advertise on billboards heavy in the Lehigh Valley as the local channel, especially for news. Can't tell you for how long though. WWOR is a "My Network" and the only large affiliated network in New Jersey (at least in the Northern part) so they theoretically should show more NJ based news and affairs. They don't cover where I am... mostly Essex and Bergen Counties... but I digress.
@@mrmoose6619 Portland doesn't black out any content for NH audience, Tegna (then Gannett) owned WCSH in Portland and WLBZ in Bangor. WLBZ aired Bangor News IIRC 6 and 11, then WCSH for all other dayparts and weekends. But when the big rebrand to "News Center Maine" a few years ago, it signaled an end to the Bangor news ops, with everything coming out of Portland.
Also understand the dynamics by 1999 with cable-centric audience. That alone hardened the Northern NH audience to be part of the Portland DMA. I find it funny to talk to people in Southern NH to know that WMUR-TV has not only competition from Boston but Portland for the Northern part of the state, and downstate people just don't realize that Maine is obligated to cover the Conway region.

As an aside, I remember a situation from Week 9 in 2015, when the Giants visited the Buccaneers in a 4:05 p.m. ET game (single late game; CBS had the DH). For reasons I still don't know to this day, WOFL FOX 35 and WOGX FOX 51, FOX's owned-and-operated stations (O&Os) in the Orlando/Daytona/Melbourne and Gainesville DMAs, respectively, ended up being given the Green Bay Packers/Carolina Panthers game in the early window instead. The Bucs were 3-4 going in, so they weren't awful at that point. That couldn't be used as an excuse due to FOX affiliates in Panama City, Tallahassee, Southwest Fla. and South Fla. taking that game. That's one of the strangest NFL broadcasting decisions I've ever seen.
In fairness the Packers and Panthers combined for one loss going into that game.
@@CTubeMan The Bucs being a team of local interest in Gainesville and Greater Orlando should've overridden all of that, though. FOX 35 in particular ALWAYS takes any FOX telecast involving the Bucs. When asked on social media why Giants/Bucs didn't air in the area, all the station's people would say is that it was airing America's Game of the Week. I think that had to be strictly a network decision because if FOX 35 (and FOX 51, its semisatellite, by extension) was left to its own devices, it chooses the Bucs when they're available.
@@marcus813WCBS-TV (channel 2) did aired the Jets Vs. Giants game instead of the Colts Vs. Dolphins game, because they allowed to do it without screwing things up.
Ah, December 1999, the month and year the world was first introduced to one of the most awesome dudes from Knoxville.
Me.
Just finished watching and I can safely say…

Go Vols!
Wtf dude do you not know Maine is a state in New England
Sure but to be fair at that point the Giants were the .ost successful team of the 3 teams that are within reasonable driving distance in the area (Patriots Jets and Giants) since due ti Fox they get the Giants games if the NFC is the road team.
You must be a "genius" bulto.
Hi
WABI bangor, maine got the better game. The last of four washed up/young star peyton/marino match-ups as colts won 37-34. As opposed to a g men/jet kerry collins/ray lucas qb battle. A game the g men won 41-28. btw on this day soon to be s b champ greatest show rams beat car. 34-21 with warner big again throwing for 351 and three tds., faulk going 22-118, and ike bruce catching 6 for 111. az hakim also caught two tds and dre bly returned a beurlien pick 53 yards for a td. Another efficient greatest show ram win with big plays. Also 8-4 lions beat 7-5 dc wft skins in a preview of a playoff game they would lose rematch at danny boys house.
Dan Marino should have joined John Elway in retirement, those Dolphins, weren't, that good, closed, The, Kingdome, in classless fashion, and, got demoralized by the Jaguars in a Game he didn't finish.
@@matthewdaley746 yep. I guess marino didn't want to retire the same season as a fellow class of '83 qb. Or he foolishly thought with elway now done phins had a chance in weak afc.
@@stevenbauer4799 They had no chance, they, weren't, even as good as the Bills, who would have, lost, their next Game, whoever it, was, against, unless they played each, other, no question.
@@matthewdaley746 Yep. and bills owned marino and phins in the playoffs in the 90's. 3-1. bills closed the door on shula too. phins won the final meeting beating a now weaker bills squad with flutie as qb.
@@stevenbauer4799 Yeah, I remember an official standing practically right on top of, (and, behind), Andre Reed, and, ejecting him, when, (in the process of standing up), he made contact, with, him, the fact that he would have needed eyes in the back of his head to see him, truly, never, entered his mind.
Go to this channels page and search “stupidest”. Lmao. 😬
