Today we take a quick look at the city in which Nicole was born and grew up - Braunschweig (aka Brunswick - namesake of New Brunswick and many other towns and cities throughout the world)!
We begin in the Burgplatz (Castle Place), surrounded by stunning Medieval architecture... Many of the buildings have stood here for centuries - the Lion or Loewe in the centre of the square was created in the 12th century! The one we can see here today is a more recent arrival - the real sculpture, made in the Middle-Ages, was moved a number of times to keep it safe from falling bombs and, more recently, environmental damage. Now-a-days, the Braunschweiger Löwe (pronounced 'loo'v'eh) can be found inside the Burg Dankwarderode - you'll see!
Some of the buildings here look like they have been here forever, but a few have been relocated here from nearby towns. Braunschweig Dom aka St. Blasii (Cathedral) - shown in the opening shots, and where the bell tower rings out - has stood here since 1195! Only a few years after the Lion itself was cast in Bronze. The Dom is also the resting place of Henry the Lion and Emperor Otto IV.
We'll show you around the Burgplatz and inside a few of the buildings... Handwerkskammer (Guild's Building), the Burg Dankwarderode, where the original lion from 1164, can be seen among many Medieval treasures!
We also pop by a few places of interest in the city - Altstadtmarkt (the Old Town Market), Kohlmarkt (Coal Market), and we visit one of the cities most memorable characters who, it is said, tricked the town's shoemakers and bakers of the city around 1325... Till Eulenspiegel, who is the protagonist in many folktales from Germany, is though to have been a real person who lived in Lower Saxony in the early part of the 14th Century!
We hope you enjoyed today's video... Thank you so much!

Thanks so much! A lot of the inner city was destroyed in WWII , some of the older buildings were moved around 1900 from other villages but there has been a big movement of restoring what's left over the last few decades :) I had never really realized just how amazing some of the buildings are!

FUll? Not really due to the war. One of the heaviest destructions during the RAF raids, but it was called the nuremberg of the north.

What a beautiful city! So clean and the details on every building. One day I’ll visit. Went to France but never made it to Germany. ♥️

Thanks so much Sissi! A lot of the buildings have been lovingly restored , some around the 1900s :) I noticed how much cleaner Germany is compared to the UK ( everything gets recycled in Germany! ) .... The cannon ball dates back to 1615 !

Nice to see where I grew up, but I feel you could have shown more locations. LIke the Braunschweiger Schloss, the theatre, the old post building, and one of my favourite places: Handelsweg (that small little Alley with all the interesting bars.
Also you could have just walked us through the Altstadt (Magniviertel) with the actually cobbled streets and least destruction.

Thanks for the tips! All very amazing areas to cover in a future video :) There are always a lot of people in the Magniviertel so it's difficult not to show them... very true the Handelsweg is worth walking down!
