BW1354 Transfer Case Disassembly and Troubleshooting

This is a link to my favorite headlamp. I personally use it every day and its taking a beating. Its simple, bright and takes a single AA battery or a rechargable 14500 lithium cell.

I couldn't find any good info at the time of taking on this project so I figured I'd share what I found/learned along the way. I hope it helps you with your current project, I know it would have helped me!

the fix for the pump chewing up the softer case material in the BW1356 from the F-trucks is to cut the nose off the sheet metal locating tab and weld on piece of longer steel rod. That steel rod spreads the force over the surface of the case instead of concentrating it in one narrow spot and stops the pump from eventually wearing through and grenading the t-case.
Yours looks to be a cast piece of something else. So maybe epoxy in a couple thin pieces of steel plate over the area of the case where the locating tab makes contact, if you can't weld or braze to the tab itself. There isn't that much force on it so it doesn't have to be anything crazy.
Excellent video !. my son"s truck was doing the same thing. This was the only video I could find that explains the procedure. I ordered the same parts and found the wear a fair bit worse. put it back together and works 100% again! Thanks for the extra effort you put in to make and post it.
Awesome video replaced everything you did. My transfer case was doing exactly what your was doing. I got my parts from ford for about 60$ and now my truck is back 100% thanks for all your input. And I’m also a big fan of AVE

My current issue is when I activate the 4x4 after a few minutes it will start knocking slowly, it gradually increases and just disengages all drive to both front and back. I’ll be taking it apart this weekend

thank you so much. for some reason people on forums have no idea about this problem and everyone talks about vacuum lock up hubs and diff issues and im like WTF NO. this is exactly what my symptoms are.

Thanks for the video. Same symptoms in the the '06 FX4 level II . Dangerous in our BC winter highways on a hill. This must be what put my son in the ditch last winter.

First things first, Thanks so much! As far as the title I try to be as accurate as possible with my video titles. That and the bw1354 is in a ton of other vehicles other than ford rangers (rangers being the most note-able) regardless. I also tagged ranger and mazda b4000 etc so it ought to show up. Thank you for this video. I recently rebuilt my transfer case in my ranger and couldnt figure out why it was constantly locked into four wheel. Come to find out after watching your video i put the spring for the shift fork on the wrong side.

Great info, do you happen to know if the chain is the same part for the 4405? Here in my country can't find a chain for a 1354 and no one seems to know if the are the same, thanks
Similar problems here, on an '04 Ranger ... plus more.
I haven't been able to get the drive flange off yet, which means I haven't been able to crack the case, yet. But, evidence so far indicates both gear and shift fork failure (metal bits and white plastic shavings in the oil -- most of these transfer cases have white shift forks, not green).
It was fine until my wife started using it as the daily driver.....
Not a big deal for me, though. I was able to obtain a seemingly "good" 90k mile replacement for $75, and a prior version (the 5-planetary?) for $90. The good one is already in the truck and functioning. So, I can just work with these other two for now. (Manual shift is likely.)
I have the same 6 cylinder manual I had a big bang in 2 wheel drive started engine back up go's in all gears good only work's very good do you have any idea what happened and how to fix it and the best place to buy parts
I got my case out now. The symptoms were that the shift for several years was sketchy. It would go in 4wd, but not immediately. Once warmed up it would go in. If I didn't switch it often for months I would fail to change, and then I'd keep trying it would finally engage 4wd, and as long as I kept switching off and on it would seem to free up. Then one day on the freeway, it clunked, and I lost engagement to the drive train. As I was coasting in, the shifter would not move ot of gear. But when I stopped, the engine running, and clutch disengaged, I could easily shift in all gears as if he clutch was no longer engaging. Also the truck would roll free.
We notice after inspecting through the bell housing hole, the clutch was fine. I was going to remove the tranny, but when I disconnected the rear differential drive shaft, the output flange on the transfer case moved as if in neutral, and the input to the tc was locked while still attached.
So, I'm thinking the TC is fowled, any ideas? I'll be into the parts today sometime. But sounds like the TC clutch, because I don't think it has a neutral position. Not sure
Well you have the transfer case out now, might as well split it. I’d have checked the shift motor, maybe drain the transfer case oil and check for chunks but id open it up for sure now that its out. If its not obvious feel free to send me a few pictures ect
@@zfocuser Yeah, the chain had a ton of slop in it, and the nylon was gone from the forks. I'm not sure, but the plastic fork, does it need the nylon liners? I'm replacing the forks and rail, filter, chain, and shift motor.
would a piece of rubber hose slipped over the pump tang give it enough cushion to stop the wear-thru of the case?split thehose lengthwise and slip it over the tang???would also spread out the pressure on the case some. maybe the difference between a 1354 and a 1356 is the 2 planets???? 1356 being the stronger t case
Having the same issue with my ranger atm it kicks out of 4wd while driving, very snowy where I live and 4wd is a must. Can you please include the parts you bought and numbers? I changed my transfercase shift motor and used a 2nd hand transfercase with the same issue. Thinking my luck is just that bad and the transfercase I bought has a bad reduction hub.
I have a clunk. Then a clicking with no grab of the front tire. In reverse the Fx4 works fine. Forwards. Ill get 3 feet in the deep sand and it will cllunk out of 4high or 4lo and start clicking untill I take the foot off the gas.
The fact that it works good in reverse hints that that clutch/hub I show is likely worn. I would pull the drain plug on the front diff just for my own sanity, but I think you found your problem

I was into it for under 80$ Then add on some atf, a tube of silicone and a couple cans of brake clean. If your transfer case is slipping it could also be the chain

Great video man, my ranger seems to shift in and out of 4wd while driving in 2L and my guess is that I have the same problem as you. I’m going to pull it apart this weekend and see if I have wear
If you have selected 2wd high range and it is going in and out of 4wd I would suggest troubleshooting your shift motor before removing and disassembling your case. If its happening in 4wd then you might have a problem inside. Best a luck. Keep me posted!

The two case halves are simply cleaned and then rtv silicone’d back together

So i dont know why but it does appear your missing 2 pinions i tore two cases apart to make one after watching this video both cases i split had 6 pinions one was a 93 and one was a 03

Ripping and tearing is easy. If taking it apart seams hard just wait till assembly time 😂
1354's are fords definition of "junk" all have given mme trouble and was told there is no fix for them , well ther is a conversion kit to manual and there are websites with the parts you need , my main issues were the plate wore thru the wear spacers on the forks and no longer shifted from low to high. took one apart and that was the issue, now have on stuck in 4 high and suspect the same issue
Put the camera on a stand next time. I can't watch It jumping and wonder all over the place. And enough with the "FOCUS". Another reason to put it on a stand. Otherwise not a bad instructional video.
