Why I QUIT Masterbooks EXPLAINED w/ Flip Through || NEW Homeschool Curriculum Choices 2021

  • After a Semester of STRESS and Fatigue I decided to change our homeschool Curriculum for 2021, mid-year. We were using Masterbooks plus added workbooks that were taking a toll on my kids. After much prayer and thought on changing my philosophy on homeschooling, I decided to go with the Unit Study / Charlette Mason Approach. I am combining both IEW and TruthQuest for an Ancient Biblical History Study.
    In this video I will:
    1) What we have been doing
    2) Tell you what I am quitting Masterbooks
    3) Flip through Masterbooks L.A. 3rd Grade and explain why it is not working
    4) Tell you my new approach in homeschooling and why
    5) Show you how I am using IEW and TruthQuest together

MB is a whole different approach to learning. It’s developmentally appropriate and doesn’t push things on kids too fast. It gives them time to learn at their own pace and process the information. There is absolutely no busy work and they give kids the most important information so it’s easier for them to learn concepts. The younger grades are more for exposure of concepts and then each year they build on them. There is review built in the books but grammar is something that is studied every single year. It’s not supposed to be mastered in one year.
We are on our second year with all Masterbooks and it has been amazing! My kids are learning and thriving!
I realize not every curriculum is going to work for everyone but I feel like your review of MB is a little harsh (saying it’s so bad you’re just going to throw it in the dumpster) because it does work for so many families ours included.

Tasha!! I'm also in my second year of homeschooling and MB has been amazing for our family. I love the approach they have to learning. I felt like her review was a little harsh too. I was feeling werid while I was reading all the comments , and feeling like I was alone in my journey.

@@linda2022 we love the approach too!! I feel like most people who say they don’t like MB have either never used it or they only use it for a few weeks and then ditch it because “it’s too easy” without realizing that they are doing all review in the beginning and haven’t reached the new concepts yet. We haven’t had to supplement at all and my son learns so much. He even tells my 8th grader stuff he has learned that he hasn’t. It just seems there is so much hate for MB sometimes and I just don’t get it.

I don't hear harshness. I hear frustration. The curriculum needs to not just fit her kids, but also her teaching style. That being said, Masterbooks does have a preview of each book that shows quite a few lessons along with the entire scope and sequence. Much of her disappointment and surprise about the curriculum could have been avoided by simply downloading that preview and looking it over thoroughly before purchasing.

I appreciate your honest reflection. The great thing about homeschooling is being able to decide what works best for each of our children. For anyone feeling the need to defend Masterbooks, please stop and consider that this is one person's opinion on what works and doesn't work for her family. We love Masterbooks and will continue to use it until it doesn't fit our needs anymore.

Math is the main MB product that we use but I always suggest to people that if you feel like your child is a little ahead to go up a "grade level". I definitely feel that my children who were previously in public school are a little ahead of where that level is in MB. We still use it but supplement with other online math programs as well.

MB was great for our first year of homeschooling, especially since I jumped in so quickly the school year after the pandemic started. We have since moved on though because it did feel too slow for my child. The only subject we still use from them is their science. Adventures in Creation was my sons favorite subject. He’s currently working through Adventures in the Physical World and it’s revisiting things he learned in the first book, most of which he still remembers!

I've learned to do what is best for my kiddos and if it don't work toss and get what works for them and me. My kids have fun with LLFLE. But I also found I added spelling, then grammer, then writing. Then thought, why am I doing MB still! However, we do love the biblical aspect. So now we do LLFLE when life gets busy. It's a good supplement. Like right now we are moving, so they can just grab out that book and do a few lessons a day while I am able to pack and such. But once we are settled again we will be back to IEW. For $30 it's nice to have on hand.

Hey!! We switched from teaching textbooks to masterbooks middle of last year. We love how much easier it is.. but I can definitely relate to them not retaining, I feel like they have to go back into their lessons and look again , (but it clicks after reading the first page of the lesson) however they had to do that with teaching textbooks also, just took them a lot longer each day doing their math work. So it’s been working really well for us. I have been using language lessons for today since grade 2 (my fathers world) and I love the ease of it, it’s Charlotte mason approach also. My oldest daughter just completed LLFT 5 and I switched her to grammar and Bible through masterbooks and I love the Bible portion. We don’t do a spelling program on any of them, however my 9yo could definitely use something lol! We do reading with science through masterbooks together as a family and we do story of the world reading together as a family also. They all 3 do copywork daily also.
We tried fix it grammar for a while and I didn’t love it. But I can see trying it back again when LLFT stops working for us. My kids Also have to read everyday!

This video is so relatable. Master Books science is the only subject we stuck with. My daughter is in 7th grade and really did not like the other subjects at all. The math was way too easy, and below what she already knew. The history also wasn’t something she was learning from, as she tended to lose focus every time I was teaching it. We switched to Gather Round unit studies but aren’t using that alone. For math she was given the choice between Teaching Textbooks or CTC online math. She is using CTC math and really does very well with it. Bonus, they give a great homeschool discount. For now, we also went back to The Good and the Beautiful ELA. She really likes that as well. There are so many choices when it comes to curriculum that is gets very hard trying to decide which one to pick. We live in NY, so we do have to follow lots of rules and regulations when it comes to teaching our own children but it’s not terrible. This is only our second year homeschooling and I am still struggling with what curriculum works best. It is really hard at times but I think we made the right decision when we pulled our daughter out of public school. I am thankful for your video and all the others that I have watched over the last couple of years. I don’t know how I would have learned about so many different things without CZcams.😄

I've left MLFLE several times and came back. I just keep my daughter a level ahead and sometimes my husband does extra math lessons with her on a dry erase board. It works really well for us, but I don't suggest it to other people because if my husband wasn't a math nerd, I don't think it would be enough. My daughter loved the language arts because "she didn't have to think." 🙄 We no longer use it🤣

If mama doesn’t want to do it, then I’ve always felt like, time to switch. I SUPPOSE my kids can have a say also. 😜 but I agree!
I’ve had similar wondering about LLFLE. We are using it now, level 1 and 5. I think it’s working well for level 1. And my 5th grader already has a year of Classical Conversations Essentials under her belt. I think that helps. But you’ve got some very good points here.... IEW is excellent!! Very systematic. Very foundational!
Per spelling. I personally hate spelling infused into a curriculum for children who struggle. My daughter needs a separate spelling curriculum according to those specific needs. Not at the same level as her Lang arts.
This just proves the point of homeschooling vs schools. You can’t customize for your child in a school. Everybody gets the same thing whether it works or not. And in homeschool, you can customize every subject according to your family and children’s needs!
Thanks for this!! It was very helpful!

We quit level five on the first day. I just felt like there was no depth at all. It’s just exposure to concepts with no continued practice or study.

Really? I felt the opposite of Gather Round. I wanted so badly for it to work because it was a nifty idea that would save time for big families but it was too good to be true. I felt the grammar so incredibly light and while that was fine for my first grader, even the upper elementary was really light for my 4th grader. And the history was so random. I do think it worked okay for geography and science but it was too pricey (especially after buying activities, games, etc.. to make the units more fun) to only cover two subjects.

She hasn’t really comprehended a lot and just learned new words which I do appreciate. The math is so simple for her I have to find so many other supplemental things for her to extend. My son has always been a good reader so I thought that he would like the HOD but he didn't either, it was a constant struggle to get him to do any of it. I feel many teachers here in Quebec are quick to judge a label throw up their hands and quit trying. I feel my children have benefited from being kept home due to the pandemic and my twins lung condition. People talk about full inclusion but the government doesn’t give the resources needed and teachers are at a point where they don’t want to try. My daughter went to a school that functioned on an unschooling project based learning curriculum that was child centred.
