I don't know if you've ever talked about designing a collection for undergarments or specific fabrics used (because this can affect the shape and dynamic of top layers), but I'm interested in experimenting by making these as well. If you have or would rather not, I'm curious how to acquire resources for a small batch (I want enough material/notions for multiples of one type of garment, but not so much to produce for a client base) that does not require bulk ordering. Mainstream hobby shops carry a ton of synthetics or blends, and I want to find better quality materials in natural fibers better for my skin. Another question I have is how to request samples and how that process works.
Thank for this video! I am just getting into sewing and designing clothes for myself (self-taught), so understanding linings was really helpful. There were some purposes for linings that I didn't know. Excellent breadth of information!
Another video about feeling like donkey perhaps?
Can you please take some free online classes for beginners? Please please please...love from Bangladesh(a small country)and I want to be a fashion designer
Yes, please more videos on construction! I'd really be interested in seeing "lapel" techniques. I hope that when I'm finished with my project that I can share a photo with you. I respectfully honor your opinion. Thanks for your wonderful tutorials! 😊
Hi, could you do a video on the different kinds of padding to add structure and form to a garment.
I love that you don't assume what all your watchers know what you're talking about. You really take the time to explain terms and vocabulary.
I agree with this so much.
Thank you for explaining this. Some clothes often came with linings at one time. I miss how easy it was to slip on a lined jacket or skirt. The lined garments hung better, didn’t cling or get caught up in awkward ways and were just easier to wear than adding a slip to a garment. I’m coming back to sewing after many years, now I feel better about learning to add linings.
hey zoe! i just wanted to say that i'm currently a 17 year old getting my GED after dropping out of school. i'm doing it so i can go to college and get my associate's in fashion design and your videos helped me solidify that decision. i've seriously never found such a comprehensive resource on anything, ever, and as there's a LOT to learn about design and the industry, i can't thank you enough for putting it all together and leaving it free for people like me, who can't really afford a ton of individual courses and books. awesome videos, please keep it up!!
Good luck with your schooling, Morbid! It's tough but worth it. Have a ball!
Omg... perfect timing. I am trying yo finish my senior project but can't decide what lining to use 😕
hope this helps!
I am a lining freak and often add it to clothes that I'm sewing when the pattern lacks a lining. Dresses, skirts, trousers and vests. Living in a small town, I'm dependent upon what is available at Joanns or I order off of the net. Silk, batiste, or rayon is what I use. It's really hard to find rayon linings. Right now I'm using a heavy rayon satin to line a tropical weight wool coat. It's a good choice as I put them together. Silk or rayon Charmuse is my favorite choice for lining skirts, trousers or blazers or jackets.
A lined garment is a sign of better quality 8n my opinion.
@Aster Sylvestris The issue with online stores is the lack of tactile feel that one gets from shopping from a brick and mortar store. Often what is online doesn't match the description.
@Aster Sylvestris I've run into mislabled and outright scam fabric. The supposed silk or rayon doesn't pass the burn test. Over time I can tell by just the feel what it is.
I love your lots of words about linings! I am a home sewer, but I really wanted to understand better how to choose linings that work well for the costumes and clothes I am making, especially in light of what I am learning about breathability and natural fabrics in relationship to the need for things to be slippery for walking in a skirt. It's so awful to wear a beautiful long skirt that bunches all over one's legs once you try to move around!
Oh my lord my favorite topic
Same here can't find any videos on linings these days😉😄
Thank you for breaking down the terms! Very helpful since this is the first video I’m watching to learn sewing
I despise polyester lining. Before I knew anything about fabric or sewing, I’d cut lining out, bc it felt so scratchy and gross to me, and I had no idea why it was there. Then I finally learned that silk lining is a thing. World of difference!
I am switching careers to fashion because of you. Thank you for these tutorials.
Nothing gets my fashion juices flowing like having a jacket/coat open to reveal a fabulous luxurious lining 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I spent days trying to understand what a facing was, and you surprise me with a perfect explanation. Thanks for your informative videos!
You're welcome!
Interfacing is very important
Hey I recently found your channel and it helped me figure out that I wanted to be a fashion designer I’m learning a lot from you so keep up the good work
Heart Blazer I have just got into fashion like I always liked it but now I want to make my own clothes and possibly make art and drawings on them
So grateful for this, lining was always one of the things I’ve feared to put in! I hope you make more garment construction videos :)
Thanks a lot of this informative video. I probably avoided doing some crucial errors with my jacket project after watching this video.
This is Eileen. This is really helpful as you give thorough explanations such as the types of silk that can be used, not just "silk".
Thank you for this video! I graduated 2 years ago with my design degree and I have always felt that linings and facings were a daunting task in design. I already feel much more confident now in that area with this information, and I can’t wait to apply this when redesigning a raincoat I had made back in school!
Hey, Zoe! I do love your garment construction videos. I was just learning some draping and got really stressed when I realized that I obviously need to make a lining for a dress that I draped and have no idea where to start, so this video is coming at the perfect moment for me! I really enjoy all of your videos. Thank you sooooo much for sharing your knowledge with us! Your videos have helped me to learn so much!!
Yay! Good luck on your dress!
Woohoo new Zoe Hong video, I hope it goes over inserting lining, if not then I hope you continue "how to sew" and do how to fully line a dress and jacket. 🙏🙏🙏
Anyway, can't wait for this one😘😘😘 love you tons and I freak out everytime you "❤" my comment or respond with a comment, I get so excited i nearly die, I've told you this before but I'm addicted to your videos and you're the best teacher ever.
thank you!
Loved it, great minds think alike, you mentioned that I asked about in the first few seconds of the video 🤣🤣🤣 definitely gonna check that book out, but I do love practical demonstration, and where better than the Zoe Hong Academy of Fashion😉😘😘😘
Thank you so much! This is an area that I am totally new to understanding. My grandmother was a professional tailor, but she had no patience for me to learn. Thank you for the great explaination.
Thank you so very much for this video. I'm getting back to sewing again after watching a fashion show from planning to actual runway. Oh my word, I have so much to learn and I am excited to find your channel. Education about a craft (my passion is sewing and jewelry making) is key to success. Your voice held my attention and I was understanding everything. I am truly happy and thankful to you. Ok I'm on to the next video.
I loved this video and was a review I really needed because I am lining a petticoat and flower girl dress! First time lining a dress and skirt!
Thank you Ms. Zoe!!
Another amazing video.
Now I know a lot about linings. What a wonderful, thorough and clear explanation!🌺🤗🌺
I’ve been binge watching your videos for the past few days and I gotta say this is one of my faves! Who knew lining was such an interesting topic. Whenever I sew something for myself I’ve always just used plain white cotton for lining, and now you’re telling me I can be creative AND add functionality!? Say what!? (Also, no wonder the sleeves on my trench coat always bunched up lol)
My high school has trade programs and all of that! I am taking fashion design and marketing !!! My fashion teacher has been using your videos ever since school was canceled!
Yesss, I’m excited for more garment construction videos!!! 😌
Thank you,, I am process of drafting a straight skirt, with the knowledge on invisible zipper from your zipper video and now have confidence of finding the correct lining for it.
Loved your INFO! I enjoyed your teaching abilities In terms of sewing lining and what kind of materials you would use. I am trying to Get back into sewing again. Hopefully my hands will cooperate.😊😊❤
Thank you so much! Today in college the teacher suggested to investigate before we go and sew our exam piece! So just in time for me!
Your videos give me butterflies and i don't know why. Im just excited to watch them .
one word !!!....Beautiful!!
Glad I found this video, it helped me understand the different layers of garment construction.
What you explain here are the prefect answers for my questions: ...trying my best to choose a perfect lining fabric for the ‘self’ cotton corduroy (w/ < 5% stretch). Further, resisting a polyester. I’ve shopped a lot and was on the brink of pushing back the project. Thank you so much! ~ L
Great information! Thanks!
All of my questions were answered in the first four minutes. Bravo!
What a beautiful job (at 7:18), the tape binding looks fabulous closing those seams! A really WOW! sewing task that I would like to mimic.
Thank you very much I learned a lot watching you linings video
I always learn new things about fashion from you Thank you so much 🙏
You're welcome!
Watching these videos has given be a better understanding. Thanks a lot🖤
Dear Zoe, I love all your teaching. Thanks.....
Ok that's it - you've inspired me to make pockets for the silk pants I just made (and seriously miss somewhere to put little things). Super vid. Love, love, love the linings
I love your teaching, very knowledgeable, thank you for sharing ZOE,Blessings
I already liked the video, because I know it's going to be good 😂
hahahaha thanks!
I so agree. My pet peeve, is polyester anything. I refuse to wear it anymore. So, in making myself a new wardrobe, I will only use natural fabrics. Linings make a garment 100% nicer. I will line everything
What fabric do you suggest ? I also dislike polyester
Hi there. Thank You. Same pet peeve here. Hate beautiful natural fiber garments with polyester or man made fabric linings.
This is so helpful thank you
Wonderful information. Thank you!
I was literally just looking for a video about this an hour ago!!! Thank you for the incredibly informative and wonderful content. Keep up the great work
You're welcome!
More garment construction videos for the win! I love your "no nonsense" and keep it real approach!
Thanks!
I want to make dresses from a show that I watch Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace. It’s changyi but I like the dresses Ruyi wears and I’m scared I’ll choose the wrong lining. Some of her dresses look so flowy and breathable minus the ones that are heavily embroidered with silk based. That would be another project to learn but for now I need to lining down before I can move on to that. Definitely saving this to my favorites.
Edge stitching or under stitching is the best for keeping lining's bulk from showing another hand stitching alternative is prick stitching for hard to sew places. I love this video it helped me alot in understanding linings😍
Loved that eyeshadow 🙊🔥
Ms Zoe, thank you for your excellent video. It is complete and full of great information. I feel inspired to begin sewing again. Oh, my dream of creating a Channel style jacket for me!!!
Thank you so much.🌺🤗🌺
This was amazingly comprehensive. Thank you
Thank you so much Zoe Hong you are saving me a lot of time and educating me :) Love the specific advice and what you bring. I'm attempting to make a coat, full length (princess cut style) for winter. Getting the fabric weights right is all the more important for all that extra fabric. 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you... Me I always knew only two types of lining but this has expanded my knowledge about them thank you
I didn't learn linings at all in first year pattern making or construction classes I took at college so Thank you for this! I'm going to make a list of your book recommendations - this will definitely be on there!
i love these videos
I agree, must have pockets, great information, thank you, still learning !
Tahnk you so much for your helpful knowledge!!
I love u Zoe, this was super informative
Loving your videos.
Amazing! Always fascinating to watch, and I'm not even in the fashion industry or a student!
I was struggling with a question on lining and you just answered it.😄🎉 thankyou sooo much
WOW!! Learned a lot. Thank you for taking the time to teach me so much!
Awesome! Pockets! I'm making charmuse over habotai . I was going to use a soft cotton lawn, but no, the habotai won. Definitely a sin to put poly under silk.
Edited.
thankyou so much for such a comprehensive and helpful teaching video.
You are always able to pack so much meaningful/useful information into your videos and don't take hours to do it! Yes, I would like to see more construction videos. Not necessarily you sewing something, but explaining with the drawings and examples of what you are communicating. On another topic...I really like the cabinet behind you with the drawers. Nice way to keep your area neat/clean and orderly, even if what is in the drawers is a mess!! LOL.. Also, missed the headphones..LOL.
My in-laws bought me that cabinet ages ago. I'm pretty fastidious about my art supplies. Everything is organized in categories.
Most of my CZcams watch history contains football and sewing among other interests. After watching the NFL draft, this video is a perfect suggestion. The algorithm worked.
You are incredible. Thanks.
Listening to you is like going to fashion school for free😁😁😁
They have this book at the library at my college 😮💨👌🏽
Always enjoy your 101 series! So many details n techniques!! Thanks so much💕
Yes more garment construction vdo.
Your videos are always so helpful and inspiring thank you!
LOVE! Such precious content, wouldn't have looked for this by myself. I learned tons. Watched til the end. Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Zoe for explaining the concepts so easily !
You’re a terrific communicator.
Thank you! Very informative.
Great eyeshadow! Thank you for the lovely video
Thanks so much Zoe, love the video, such a clear explanation for lining.
thanks so much for your knowledge
Thank you for this, I hope you know this helps
Thank you, I learnt alot.
You are extremely qualified. I am about to execute my first lining ever. I am making a velvet blazer but lining is a pain in the neck...
I want lining when buying clothes, because so many fabrics are so transparent.... :D Great video! :)
I am watching all videos in quarantine.. I even don’t understand completely because of my English.😢anyway I really love you and your videos thanks for everything
thank you Zoe your videos always helpful and cover every detail 🙏🏼🥰
This was very helpful. -Wayne

Fantastic Video Zoe!! I'm learning so much from your videos getting ready to go to school for fashion design :)
Thank you for making this channel!!!
Loved it. 💖 please make more garment construction videos. Interfacings, interlinings, and all the other good stuff I don't know the name of.
So much thought goes into clothes making, it's crazy.
And I haven't even talked about interfacings and closures yet.
@@zoehongteaches Maybe interfacings and closures is a new video idea! :)
Dear miss Zoe ❤️ happy Saturday 💕💕
Superb! I'm going to search for th book. Great tutorial!
I love when I find a garment with with a unique secret lining. It's like an Easter egg, like the garment has a "told you so..." waiting patiently while you discover this is going home with you tonight.
You are the best.... Thanks
Great video about linings! I love making a pretty, as well as functional, linings and facings in my garments. I have the new addition of that book and so far, it seems to be just fine. Thanks for the informational video!
Thanks for the tip!
