  • UPDATE! Apple just released a new support document that talks about the problem and provides two different fixes!
    support.apple.com/en-us/HT211983
    UPDATED NEW STEPS!
Step 1 - create a macOS Big Sur Full installer usb!
    • Create a bootable macO...
Boot your Apple Silicon Mac to that USB drive then erase and reinstall Big Sur.
Step 2 - Use resetpassword macOS recovery to trigger "Erase my Mac" function to reinstall macOS.
If you try to reinstall macOS on your new M1 Apple Silicon Mac that still has the factory build of macOS 11.0 (20A2411) you will get an error. An error occurred preparing the update. failed to personalize the software update. Please try again. The issue requires a 2nd Mac to fix! When the macOS is reinstalling the Mac will attempt to personalize the version that is being installed. You will get this error.

An error occurred preparing the update. failed to personalize the software update. Please try again.
This specific version of macOS Big Sur 11.0 (20A2411)
The version shipped with brand new M1 Macs looks to be
    Apple Silicon Mac Mini
    Apple Silicon MacBook Air
    Apple Silicon MacBook Pro 13"
    macOS Big Sur 11.0 (20A2411)
Looking at macOS Big Sur’s build timeline, it seems that this build falls in around macOS Big Sur 11.0 Beta 10.
    Big Sur 11 Beta 11.0.1 (20B5012d) Beta 1 - 10/28/20
macOS Big Sur 11.0 (20A2411) = Apple Silicon Factory Shipping version
    Big Sur 11 Beta 10 (20A5395g) - 10/14/20
The issue seems to be only related to this specific build version. No reports of this happening after updating to macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 (20B29)

When I try the exit button and click ‘Startup Disk’ and then select the Macintosh HD and restart. It brings me back. I also want to have the photos, Apps back.

I applaud you Mr. Macintosh. I had already attempted following apple's instructions 8 or 9 times. I was pulling my hair out. That "erase mac" part of the puzzle is the key. If all you do is try and follow apple's instructions, you miss it. Everything worked now without much of a hitch.
The only thing I would add is that reformatting the Macintosh HD after "erase mac" can take some fiddling. I had to click on "view all" erase all containers, and then again erase the volume that would become Macintosh HD. Before going through this process it simply didn't work for me.
So incredibly thankful for your help on this! Do you have a Patreon or something?

I'm having this "failed to personalize" error message while attempting to upgrade 11.6.1 to 11.6.2.
How does this solution work if the re-install option in Big Sur 11.6.1 recovery mode is to install Monterey and not Big Sur? Which Big Sur update changed the re-install from Big Sur to Monterey?? I suppose you can't re-install from recovery and have to create a bootable Big Sur 11.6.2 installer instead.

So I’d say that my mac condition is:
    1. There was no account to reset the password
    2. I had “Macintosh HD” instead of “untitled”
And what I've done just following the step on this video.
When it says there's no account to reset the password, JUST KEEP FOLLOWING THE STEP. You just click the “erase mac” and continue the step.
And when you had Macintosh HD instead of “untitled”, just keep following the step to hit the erase button and you just skip to rename the HD.

WORKED!!! I bought a M1 mac mini for $243 and wondered why it was so discounted. This was why! The last person to use it probably thought it was completely bricked. It had the original Big Sur version. I had some scary blue and green glitchy flashing while it was restoring but it ended up working and got into MacOS Big Sur fine. Now updating to Sonoma 👍

Amber, is your mac encrypted with FV2 ? If so we are in a bad place. If not, all you need to do is clear some data off your hard drive so the installer can finish. You can boot it into target disk mode with another mac or delete some files in terminal with macOS recovery. I am working on an article and video for this now.

Hello! I am working on this video now, It will come out as soon as Apple Releases macOS Big Sur 11.1. You will be able to follow the instructions for both Intel and Apple Silicon to roll back to a previous production version of big sur or a beta. But until then, you have 2 choices. 1. AC2 DFU Restore to 11.0.1 or 2. Wait until 11.1 production is released then you can update right to the final version!

In the end I tried this method I still had to enter my apple id as it kept saying the MBA was linked to an apple ID I needed that to get into the utility menu. I erased the the untitled volumn and renamed it, just hoping when BigSur installs its a clean machine as I am returning it. If not, do you have any suggestions how I can get my Apple ID off it?

Thanks, You Just Saved My Mac mini M1
I got my Mac mini M1 on Nov. 23 from Costco. Almost immediately, I began getting random kernel panics -- freeze, magenta screen, reboot. I tried to run Apple Diagnostics, but the progress bar froze at the end of "Checking" in the text above it. That led to a week-long research project as I learned how to use the power button to get into Recovery, etc. Finally, last Sunday I contacted Apple Support. After running through all kinds of checks, etc., the Advisor suggested I erase the SSD and reinstall macOS Big Sur. Then he wished me good luck in reinstalling Big Sur and we signed off. Looooonnnnggg story short, on reboot my Mac mini had the personalization error, there was no user, no password, etc. 6 more advisors, 4 hours in online chat and 2 hours on the phone with Apple Engineers and three days later, I packed up my Mac mini and was planning to take it back to Costco for a full refund. The Apple people said I had to take it in to an authorized Apple service center or Apple Genius Bar to get it repaired. Hah! They soon discovered that meant an 8-hour round trip from my northern California home. So as I was stewing about this M1 mess, I browsed the Internet to see if anyone else was having problems with the inability to reinstall Big Sur, kernel panics, Apple Diagnostics that didn't work. After a while, I was about to give up when I stumbled upon Mr. Macintosh's video showing how to do it. The key? Get to "Erase Mac". I just finished following this procedure and my Mac mini M1 is installing Big Sur. Wow! I sure hope Apple Support would hire you to train its advisors, Mr. Macintosh. Oh, by the way, after my Mac mini was activated, I shut it down and booted from a Big Sur installer thumb drive that the personalization error prevented use of before. Wow! Wow! Wow! Thanks!

      @Mr.Macintosh  Před 3 lety

Jim, wow.... what a crazy journey and sorry that you had to go through all that. If we wanted to look at the good things, you have now learned a lot about your new Apple Silicon Mac! I'm just glad that you found this video and are back up and running again! Enjoy that M1 Mac Mini, it's fantastic and will last you a long time.

    • @jimscott28
      @jimscott28 Před 3 lety

@@Mr.Macintosh Yes, I've certainly learned a lot more about Apple Silicon. It's going to take awhile to learn how to speak the new language. The reason I got all bollixed up is that when the Apple Support advisor told me to erase the SSD and reinstall, I naturally went to Disk Utility and did the deed. That was not only WRONG, it almost was fatal. Until I saw your video. I was quite stunned to learn that the "Erase Mac" utility actually was the way to "activate" my Mac mini so the reinstall of Big Sur would work. So why doesn't Apple explain that Apple Silicon Macs have to be "activated", like putting a SIM card in an iPhone, before they can be loaded with an OS? More fun ahead, for sure.
