Body cam footage of Rayshard Brooks’ death shows calm, then chaos

- The first 29 minutes don’t prepare you for the all-too-familiar tragedy that follows: a white police officer, a black male victim, lethal gunshots and questions about whether any of it was justified. It happened again in Atlanta Friday night, when Officer Garrett Rolfe fired three times at a fleeing Rayshard Brooks. Both men, 27 years old. The shooting would set off a stunning chain of events, culminating in the resignation early Saturday night by Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields. (Video edited by Ryon Horne, Christian Boone)

This was not about the man being black at all.
You’re right, this isn’t a case of racism. It is, however, another case of a trigger happy cop not being able to deescalate a situation properly. Even if he had gotten away you still have his car and all his information. He should’ve been jailed for this, not murdered. The reality is, the value of black life in a cops eyes is zero. The job is to protect and serve not to provoke and slaughter.
@@TheWildGiraffe the man attempted to shoot him with a taser they are trained to shoot in that situation dude was a split second decision they arent trained to let perps go especially ones who resist arrest
@@TheWildGiraffe Step 1: shoot the cop with the taser he grabbed. Step 2: grab the cop's gun and kill the cop. When a previous convict has this option in hand, I don't see how the cop has an alternative safe option that doesn't involve shooting. There were quite a few minutes of polite and calm conversations before the fight started, I really don't see how the cops didn't try deescalate the situation.
Well, now he is being charged with murder. The other one is being charged with aggravated assault.

He chose to drink, he chose to drive drunk, he chose to sit in line as he was falling asleep, he chose to resist arrest, he chose to fight the cops and steal their taser, he chose to run and for some reason turn and fire the taser at the pursuing cop.
If he doesn’t do ANY one of these things listed above, he lives.
Tasers like the one he stole and fired can be used exactly one time before they need to be reloaded.
After firing the taser, he was essentially unarmed. The cops knew that and fired anyways. He wasn't just a non-lethal threat at that point, he was no threat at all.
@@EmoNemoNinja Well here is the thing. Hypothetically, had this man managed to escape what do you think would have happened to him next encounter? If he had escaped, cops already had his information, so they knew where to find him. After turning around, while running, pointing and firing just a taser, cops know this man has no problem pointing a potential weapon at them. What do think the cops would do next time they saw this dude? Guns already drawn, and if this guy would have made one wrong move? Shot. He was a potential dead man anyway if he got away.
but that's wayyyy too much personal responsibility.
And he chose to lie alot. He was clearly a dangeour and had to be arrested.
@@EmoNemoNinja you're an idiot. God forbid people be accountable for their own actions. Hate to see anyone killed but the officers were polite and professional up until the man decided to fight. Had he simply complied he would be having Birthday cake with his daughter the next day.
I’m black myself to be honest this is not there fault he grabbed the taser and they had to protect there selves
From being tased? It's not a life-threatening device, not unless you have a heart condition. And even if, there were two of them. You can only shoot one person with a taser, and you have to stay there and keep pulling the trigger for it to be effective, but first, you have to hit them with the prongs which is really difficult to do when you're running. Every cop knows this - they're trained for this. He was running away, so even if the officer had a heart condition, which I doubt because he wouldn't be on patrol duty, taser would never have hit him, or maybe have only stunned him for a second before the connection was severed by Brooks running away. And the cop knew this. Brooks died because the officer was too lazy to pursue him, and decided to shoot him instead. How's that ok with you?
@@B3RyL
With respect to you. assume he used the taser against the officer. Then he fall down. The suspect might control his gun and shoot him dead. Police officers traind for many possibilities. Why shoot a man that had a non lethal weapon?
Let's hope not... GA law regards tasers as deadly weapons...it's awful that the man died, but he shouldn't have resisted, should've NEVER went for the taser, should have NOT shot at the officer!! Even after everything, the cop was concerned about the guy's welfare! THAT'S A MAN WHO WAS DOING HIS JOB!
@@bboywolf do you not believe that a non-lethal weapon can be wielded with lethal results? Cops are not trained to shoot to subdue. If they are shooting they are shooting to kill
@@bboywolf It's hard to determine what was right and wrong given that none of us were in this situation. But my guess is that the suspect fired the taser on the one officer who was chasing after him, and it appeared to me that the officer who shot was unaware that his colleague was right behind him. It actually looks like the suspect deploys it on the officer. If the officer is incapacitated the suspect can get ahold of a deadly weapon, thus a split-second decision was made to shoot the suspect.
@@bboywolf I think the officer's defense will be that during the scuffle he not only believed the suspect had taken his partner's tazer, but also his partner's sidearm. When running in pursuit, he believed that Mr. Brooks turned around and was firing his partner's sidearm at him.
This video is pretty heavily edited - if you watch the whole body cam video, the original responding officer was super accommodating to Brooks, absolutely no indication of racial bias at all. And the second officer, who was tasked with running the field sobriety test was also very accommodating and attempted to keep everything calm. This heavily edited video doesn’t show how completely hammered brooks was - if he had gotten behind the wheel he definitely would have killed someone, so he needed to be arrested, but when the officers attempted to arrest him, after being completely polite and reasonable (although incoherent) brooks went 100% violent like the flip of a switch. For anyone saying the taser isn’t a deadly weapon, that’s easy to say when it’s not you in the situation, but for the police officers, their training would have told them that if a suspect is tasing you, the next thing likely to happen is that they’ll take your firearm and shoot you with it. It’s easy to Monday-morning quarterback the decision to shoot him, but when you have to make snap judgements like that you rely on training, and those officers made every effort to keep the situation de-escalated before Brooks attacked them.
Completely justified. If he hits the cop with the taser then he has the chance to grab the gun. And they couldn’t let that happen
This man had 2 choices:
1. Don't resist, spend a night in the Drunk Tank to sober up and go home the next morning and fight the charges in a Court of Law at a later date.
2. Resist being arrested, assault a Police Officer, take the Officer's taser and then fire said taser at the Officer. Ķnowing that you will be shot if you do.

@@Thiefik121 Alright, I'll bite. give me a case in the past five years where that exact scenario took place. Drunk guy steals officer's tazer while running away, fires behind him without looking, then doubles back--all while drunk mind you--gets to said officer on the ground IF the tazer even hit him, then fumbles the officer's gun out of its holster (which can be difficult if he comes in at the wrong angle) and then pulls out his gun and shoots one or both officers. I'd be impressed if you could find anything like that happening EVER, much less in the past 5 years.
Here are the facts: The man had a non-lethal weapon. He should not have resisted arrest. Resisting arrest does not warrant a death sentence. The man was not actively endangering the lives of the officers or the surrounding people, as he had a non-lethal weapon. The officer had a partner, even if the first officer had been tazed. The man was clearly shooting the tazer to gain distance and run away (Again which he definitely shouldn't have done but that doesn't warrant lethal force) and not to get control of a lethal weapon. He had plenty of chance to reach for the officer's weapon when they were wrestling, but instead went for the tazer. Clearly the man was not innocent, but the officer's lives were not in immediate danger and he was not actively a threat to anyone else. Those are the only two situations in which lethal force is warranted. Just a bit of discretion and trigger discipline could have made this death COMPLETELY avoidable.

nunya bidness i was a water police in my place ,that is true if u are not trained and shot at head or heart and if officer was down he could take officer’s pistol
Personally having discussed this in other comment threads I feel that shooting him was morally wrong for a number of reasons including, they had a second officer on scene, the weapon being fired at the officer was non lethal, they had his car and his ID so they knew who he was and that he wouldn't be able to drive away endangering others. With all this said, when you're an officer and the subject had previously resisted and he begins the turn to fire back at you, I could see how in the officers shoes, pulling the trigger might be borderline instinctual and also justified because theoretically the suspect could turn around and run for the gun. I don't think the officer should be punished and I suspect his defense will hold in court. But I personally don't feel good seeing an officer kill a man for something that COULD happen (IE grabbing a lethal firearm) particularly when the body language seemed to indicate the suspect wanted nothing more than to cover his escape. (His feet remain not only facing forward but moving forward as he pull his shoulder back to facilitate the shot. I agree with everyone else saying that this is not near the level of George Floyd and, like the Floyd incident, there is no evidence to suggest it was racist. Leave Wendys alone!
Not one instance of racism here. Just a jerk resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.
@Pierrick Boulanger He was a child abuser on probation for abusing his children.
And getting shot in the back. Is shooting people in the back a normal procedure if you want them to stop running? Oh wait, I forgot about Ahmaud Arbery...
@@datboy6964 Again, doesn't matter if you think he deserved punishment, the cop was way out of line for shooting him in the fucking back. Should the guy have resisted arrest? No, but that doesn't mean the cop was any less terrible.
@@avengerofthedead142 a running criminal should always be shot, who knows their next plans? The last time i saw 2 police officer resist shooting their gun the criminal comeback with a handgun almost killing 2 police officer
@@datboy6964 That doesnt change anyting, because the officers didnt know that at the moment. he might as well not bee criminal and they still would have shot him.
Let me sit down and tell you an OBJECTIVE story.
There was a man passed out in his car in a Wendy's drive through line. He had been there long enough to warrant someone calling 911.
Upon arrival, the police officer woke the man up and told him he was going to have to move his vehicle. The policeman went back to his vehicle and the man proceeded to pass out in his vehicle again. The officer woke him up again and said he needed to move. The man moves his car out of the way and pulls up on the curb and has the reverse to get off of it.
The officer asks the man several questions, all of which he answers incoherently. The officer calls for a dui certified officer to assist since he smells alcohol on the man's breath.
The second officer arrives and asks the same questions the first officer did, except now all the answers were different. The man does not even know what county or city he is in. He has no idea how he got to Wendy's and even does not know how he got from the Wendy's drive through line to the parking spot he was, which had only happened minutes before.
The man fails both the field sobriety test and breathalyzer test which he both agreed to do.
Upon being apprehended, the man put up a fight with the 2 officers and took one of their taser guns. As he was running he turned, faced the officers, and fired the taser directly at them.
At this point the man was shot 3 times.
I ask you, was the police officer warranted in firing his sidearm in self-defense from the fleeing man who was under arrest and being hostile?
Answer: OF COURSE HE WAS!
Now the SUBJECTIVE VERSION of the same story:
The man in the story was black.
I'm Latina. My black boyfriend got arrested in front of me for DUI.
He complied, did not resist, did not fight the cops, did not grab anything off of them to use against them, went to jail, I bailed him out, went to court, we paid fines but......
he's alive, back at work and doing well. The cops were actually pretty cool just like officer Rolfe was so......🤷♀️
Yup people just make it harder on themselfs for no reason
