- My favourite #JaneAusten #NorthangerAbbey classical novel movie adaption. Felicity Jones acting as Mrs. Morland is marvellous and JJ Feild charming smile transcending - as his wit and eloquence. The music is brilliant.
I love English Literature of the 19th Century - and I think that beauty, depth, skill and education shall be spread and people shall feel inspired to meddle with the beauties of life like music, art, science, religions and spirituality, philosophy and literature - driven by imagination, curiosity, creativity, spirit.
Everybody in the world shall be able to take part in that. That´s why I subtitle all movie adaptions in #english #deutsch #français #espagnol #bahasaindonesia #arabian #hindi #chinese - as contribution to mutual understanding and peace among the peoples!
Comments - whether they might be appraising or critical are very welcome. Please stay polite. Thank you to the rights owner giving the permission that this adaption can be shown on youtube! Writing this in 2024. Coming back to watch this movie every now and then. Great movie with great chemistry. Love it.
Indeed. Thx for watching.
me tooo ❤
I really love the movie. Mr. Tilney's character is very charming and I think he is one of the most intriguing characters of Jane Austen's novels. The sincerity of Catherine and her ways in justifying every behaviour is so adorable ,although she might seem naive to some people ,but she is a good-natured person. The end is very cute indeed ✨
JJ Feild is marvellous besides Felicity Jones. And Catherine Walker as sister of Mr. Tilney was fabulous. Upcheering indeed. Thx a lot.
Wonderful! I love how British television makes a relatively small budget go a very long way. Excellent actors, scenery, and costumes.
...and effects! Doing the utmost out of the least - this we know how to practice in Europe. Thx.....
We also have huge storage facilities around the country from past productions. I used to work in a costume department that when commissioned it was my job to get the measurements from the actors and actresses who were going to work on the production. Where we could outer garments ie dresses, trousers, etc were reused. Some would have their trimmings changed or removed to make them look differently. Only underwear was made from new and some hats especially the men’s. Authenticity was our watch word. Got to go to a few special first nights which was fun.
Mr. Tilney may be Austen's most charmming hero, impossible not to fall in love with! Thank you for uploading.
Very welcome, enjoy.
What a beautiful movie, I love Jane Austin’s novels. Thank you for sharing
It is indeed! Thx. Happy Easter!
Beautiful and delightful adaptation. My personal favorite. JJ Feild and Felicity Jones are brilliant! The whole cast is excellent. I wish more people knew about it and could enjoy it.
Wonderful! Me, too. Best regards! Enjoy. thx.
Jane’s characters are so real, so well-developed ❤
Wonderful! Thx. Enjoy also the other Austen movies I uploaded!
I loved this movie. The actors were very good and the setting and costumes were divine.
Absolutely true! thx. Enjoy.
J.J. Field & Felicity Jones are both so perfect in this!
Very very true - way beyond merely charming!
I love Felicity Jones in this, she's so adorable!
She really is!
It is difficult for a Regency woman to embody Mars, but Catherine does well. She is an heroine. Loves dirt. Pushes through the assembly. Instruction is often torture. She wants to be faithful to her word, whether or not it is convenient for herself. Murder and violence is in her thoughts at all times. Opposition eventually is what brings her and Mr. Tilney together. I love the effect of Ares!
Even “Morland” is representative of a “marsh” - which sounds very close to Mars. She is constantly pained. Love it! 💕
Wonderful descriptioN! Thanks a lot!
This movie is true gem 💎
Very true - it gives us all a good upcheering feeling and leaves us with a big big smile!
@@bastianleejones ..everytime..☺️
I absolutely love that awkward kiss at the end 😂❤ This is such a great adapttion.
I absolutely share your opinion. Thank you!
This version was the best I've seen.
Indeed! Thx.
As someone who has watched this dvd many times, I was delighted to see several scenes here not included there. Such a fun chemistry between Fields and Jones. Love it.
Oh yeah - the conversations are of great wit! More than between Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth in BBC´s Pride and Prejudice!
Which scenes are missing from the dvd version?
I grew up on Jane Austen novels and there are certain adaptations that I love and this I one of them, I think the actors very well chosen and JJ Field and Felicity Jone wonderful chemistry but I loved all of the actors, they played their parts so well and I would give it 10 out of 10 for entertainment value! I think this is the 5th time I have watched this!
Great, you are a fan of it. I absolutely share your opnion! Thank you!!!

He looks like Tom Hidelton.lol
what an incredibly charming little movie!
It is, indeed!
I laughed at the beginning all those siblings watching her every move. Very attentive to the conversations. Imagine no privacy. 😅
I just love that dear Mrs Allen is played by a Jane Austen veteran who also played my very favorite Fanny Price; I can imagine that this might be what Fanny Price is twenty years or so after her wedding: happy, and after twenty years without scolding and nagging, just a bit more outgoing and confident.
Here as well - great to read about your thoughts. A real conoisseuse! Thanks a lot!
I watched this after a having had an accident and injured my back. For the whole time I forgot my pain. Thanks!
Be very soon in good health again! And enjoy.
A soothing film. I hope you're getting better.
I hope you're very well with a hundred percent recovery 👍
I like that they keep in the fact that Tilney is, at various points, encouraging Catherine's fascination with novels: right when she says 'I know life is not like novels' he contradicts her, then later on remarks that all old houses are haunted ... and he takes responsibility for that, too. So yes, Catherine is young and a bit naive and over-enthusiastic, but she's not stupid.
and let's be honest: _everybodys_ fantasies about a favorite movie / novel at age 17 might have looked a bit silly if dragged onto a screen. ;)
Great remarks by you! Mr Tilney is very supportive, indeed, and his way of leading conversations is wittier then these among Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. D´Arcy in Pride and Prejudice. Thx. Best regards.
@@bastianleejones Thank you! I'm never going to get over the fact that a lot of the Bennet-Darcy conversations which Miss Austen wrote ended up on the floor of the cutting room 😭😭😭. She was _so_ good at writing characters cross-talk to each other! Darcy trying to sound out Elizabeth Bennet's emotions in Rosings while she is barely listening to him must have been awesome.
*First* thing I do once scientists finally the time machine running is to abduct a good doctor, drag him back to Regency England to fix Miss Austen's health, and then go after those scenes.
Love this movie.
Me as well! Yes. Thx. Enjoy.
I'm so grateful for this upload. I come back to this movie at least once a month. Such a comfort movie.
WONDERFUL! Yeah it is such an upcheering movie!!!! thanks and enjoy!
Same, I thought I was the only one that did this.....I have a list of my favourite adaptations of my beloved JA novels.....have you seen Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam? If not have look it is just as marvellous in actors and script!
@@thefairyqueen369 Jane Austen's books and movies are one of my happy places. I always come back to them, especially when I'm anxious. I personally prefer Emma 2020 because I'm not exactly a fan of Gwyneth Paltrow's acting style. 😅 But it is a great movie and everyone in it is incredible. I just prefer the other adaptation. I quite like the BBC's short series too of the novels, especially Pride & Prejudice (1994). If you are not familiar I highly recommend it!
@@thefairyqueen369 Thanks for your hint!!!!
My second-favorite Jane Austen book. Wonderful adaptation! I love this!
Yes, indeed. Though Persuasion or Pride and Prejudice are gems, too or Mansfield Park. Thx.
Persuasion is my favorite Austen, hands down.

It's one of these movies, you can watch over and over again. Wonderful cast and directing.
Indeed - so upcheering! thx. Enjoy.
my second favorite Austen work 😍😍
Wonderful. May you find the next ones!
JJ Feild is excellent!
Absolutely. The conversation of him has wit - on top the charming smirks and smiles.
I love the way both Catherine and Mrs. Allen fall in love with him immediately. They seem to instinctively know he's a good guy.
@@LadyIarConnacht very true - his knowledge about muzzlins and he has a sister! These remarks are epic, sweet and funny but honest and precise in its meaning as well.
Thank you for spelling his name correctly.
Yes, for sure. Thanks for your hint! @@lizardas
Very enjoyable film. Excellent acting, scenery and costumes. And Jane Austen always saves the best for last. Thank you for posting
Oh yeah - Jane Austen was a master in constructing the right dramaturgic arc. I love this translation into a movie adaption , too!
I certainly like this adaptation more than the 1986 version. It's interesting that both Felicity Jones and Carey Mulligan had ended up as Oscar nominees.
True, but honestly said: not surprisingly!
Thanks for this movie - my favourites are period dramas. Best wishes.
Very true! For me as well - especially Jane Austen´s! Thx.
Jane Austen rules!
Always, indeed! Thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing the video. I love it❤
Very welcome. Enjoy also the other ones I uploaded.
I love this adaptation!
Yes, utterly charming. Thx.
Truly one of the best Jane Austen adaptions ever! It’s a shame that it’s not as well-known as the ‘95 P&P (or the 2000’s P&P that is *not* a good adaption).
I think so, too - besides 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice (Firth/Ehle) and Persuasion (Amanda Root, Ciaran Hinds)! Thx.
Have you seen the recent 'Love and Friendship' ? It's absolutely brilliant, a wonderful adaptation of one of Miss Austen's lesser known stories.
(and if you mean the 2005 adaptation: I filed that one under _'Hollywood tries to prove that it can do everything better, and ends up proving that it can't'_ .)
2005 P&P is a GREAT adaptation. If you want something literal from the page, then just read the book.
These are my favorites too@@bastianleejones
I’m glad young Mr.Tilney turned out to be true to his character
Oh yes - he did. Thank you. Enjoy!

I grew up near where that was filmed ('northanger abbey' and church at the end)
Really? Oh, pls tell us more about it!!!!!!
So, the cathedral is Called St Carthage Cathedral and its in Lismore, Co Waterford (movie was shot in Ireland). Northanger abbey is Lismore Castle, near the church and is owned by the Duke of Devonshire (same family that owns Chatsworth House in the UK). @@bastianleejones
Some more movie trivia. The house that the moreland family lives in (in the movie) is the same house that the austen family lived in, for the movie Becoming Jane (also in Ireland)

Mustn´t it be so in general? @@shannonrobinson262
Warning (unless you've already read the book by now): There are some significant differences. But the film does have its charms.
The adaptation began well, and promised much, but it is a difficult novel to adapt and all depends on not confusing the plot and the argument and assuming that Catherine succumbs to Gothic Romance, and Mr Tilney's caprice, and on not giving lines belonging to Henry to his sister. Eleanor Tilney is very important as a guide to Catherine's sense and taste
But she DOES read Gothic Romance aplenty, and is of a perfect age to be getting ideas. Many things hint towards it. I see no particular wrong there - unless one wants to read Catherine in a better light than she actually should be cast in, or 'simps' for her as the heroine?
I only recently read this (in fact, I finished it just a week or so ago) and I think it is a very good adaptation. But this is so close and, unlike most of Jane Austen's other work, little is removed and every aspect is kept true. Perhaps this is because this was her first and simplest novel.
Also, BTW, at the time this was written the general consensus toward novels was that they were wicked and put all sorts of unrealistic ideas into people's heads. Given they had so little else to compare it to, unlike today, I can see their perspective. I almost think Ms. Austen was trying to show this frivolity. In Europe they were considered merely frivolous. In America they were all but banned and definitely discouraged.
@@marigeobrienI did read that this was a satire on Gothic novels .. there must have been decent books too, after all, Austen herself wrote such stories 😊
Excellent casting and adaptation...
O
Lovely indeed. Reminds me of my stepfather. My dear mother drained in such a way🥲🥲🥲❤️❤️💕
Yeah - we all find aspects of our own lifes in it!
How lovely. So wonderfully British.

Love her imaginary sequences
Me too! Very creatively done. Thanks a lot.
She is beautiful! He did not take that away! Blessings upon her journey! Xx
Blessings are always good! Best regards!
I never knew of this Jane Austin novel, but so glad I watched it. It’s no pride and prejudice, but the acting was good, but feel the movie fell short a bit on the whole family issue of the Father being a Charlatan. It seemed very rushed at the end.
But that being said, I loved that Henry cast his Father and chose Catherine for a happy life over the fortune.
Well - I think this adaptian made the best out of it in a dense concise way. It is a piece of art in itself and can stand the novel in a certain way. great you discovered it! Best regards.
A two-hour film adaptation can never do full justice to a 200-page novel. For that, you need a six-hour miniseries, like the 1995 Pride and Prejudice, for example. If the film is basically faithful to the story and makes you want to read the book, it has done its job.
Knowing that it was the first book she wrote, though the last published (posthumously) may better help to understand Jane Austen's perspective. For a first novel, it was very good.
You are generally right. Comfort may be - that each movie adaption is in itself a piece of art in its own right - which can judge, love or dislike. @@marigeobrien
"Charlatan" may not be the exact term. He was very despotic, with undisputed authority in his family. Everybody shrank in his presence. Back in the day, in general, father's authority was undisputable, but every father was not like this.
In the book, neither Eleanor nor Henry spoke in his presence at all, it was all obedience. Henry's only escape was to run away to his own parish house, where he was the master. Here in the film, when the general speaks, Henry indulges in some facial expressions: smiles, raising eyebrows. That was hardly possible. And so, in the end, after despatching Catherine, the general summons Henry and demands to forget her, and now, that you know how much authority this father had, you may appreciate what it took from Henry to rebel against it. In the film, it is all scrambled into 5 minutes, but they did find screen time for nudity scenes, absolutely useless.
Now, when he comes to the Morlands' home to propose, the smoochie smoochie part is pure 2007. In the book, Catherine's father replies that the proposal is subject to the other father's (general's) blessing, because his daughter cannot be married without all the proper blessings, it would be a dishonour after the affront that she had suffered already. And Henry has to go back and squeeze a consent out of his father.
It's a very good novel.
If you have already read the book by now - I'm sorry for this long excursion. :)
: My only favorite tv show adaptation of Northanger Abbey 🎉.

Very true!
Even as a young girl, who always had a novel in hand, l imagined l would have enjoyed being a companion for an older well traveled woman. No marriage for me during the 1800's. 😊
Mrs. Allen: Mr. Tilney an adventurer? Mr. Tilney a scoundrel? He understands Muslin Mr. Allen. (sigh). He has a sister.
Oh - the muslin thing! Haha - almost a running "gag" by Mrs. Allen! Thx. Enjoy.
Correction for the subject line.... JJ Feild spells his name this way.
Oh - thanks for the hint! Indeed.
This is my favorite version/adaption of Northanger Abbey.
Mine as well - thank you!
Felicity Jones was an excellent Miss Morland, but Catherine Walker (Henry’s sister Eleanor) stole every scene she was in.
Very true! Thx.
In the book, Eleanor is a very promising character, but, IMO, unfinished, just a sketch. As soon as something interesting starts about her, she disappears, and a new scene starts.
Even her love story doesn't appear before the epilogue.
But in this film she's quite a presence, much more complete, it seems. Catherine was just a naive spring chicken compared to Eleanor, who does have some depth and some past.
Hello from Russia (excusez-moi 😊). Mister Jones, I completely agree that beauty, depth, skill and education shall be spread so that our world will not dive into dark waters of savagery. In our country today, it's especially important.
Very true, but with Tschechow, Dostojewski, Tolstoi - in music Tschaikowski, Glasunov, Skriabin, Prokofjieff, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Rachmaninoff Russia is among the top notch countries of Art! Best regards.

I'm sure JJ Feild was a prominent character in the wonderful David Suchet version of "Death on the Nile" And wasn't Mrs. Allen the shy Fanny Price from the excellent "Mansfield Park"? British actors can play any part at any age.

Yes, we all do. She is agem of mankind!
The dances always remind me of square dancing
Hihi - maybe, yes. Regards!
Most square dances and English country dances are adaptations of these kinds of dances, which themselves go back further than this. The "Virginia Reel" is an almost exact copy of a popular English dance at the time. Like ladies fashions, I guess they travelled well across the pond.
Gostaria que fosse dublado em português. Assim não dá para assistir
I understand. Yes. But creating Porugues subtitles is tremendously lots of work I don´t have.
Of all the bad characters on Austin's books, John Thorpe is the worst. It is because he os rotten from the beginning.
