In this #metalmonday edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Tool by listening to Third Eye. This song closes out their 2nd album, Aenima, and like most Tool songs, it packs a musical and ethical punch. In the song, we're encouraged to reach beyond dogma and open our 'third eye' to seek enlightenment and wisdom. Come along for the ride!

This is peak Tool. This is every member of the band showcasing their best material, creating this monstrous album closer. Adam gives those excellent solos (IMO the best ones he has made in Tool's discography), Justin in the bass keeping it punchy and steady along with Danny, and Maynard screaming his lungs out and whispering gently.

People who don't like this track should reconsider the assumptions they bring to it. Its not a "song" in any traditional sense of the word. It is the sonic equivalent of a psychedelic experience and deep self introspection. Viewed in that light and given the quality of the soundscape, its an exceptional track and truly unique in the entire history of music. It still may not be someone's cup of lemontek and it certainly isn't the kind of track many people will want to listen to regularly, but it has earned its accolades. Personally, this is one of my top 5ish Tool tracks and one of my most cherished songs in all of music. There are so many details, sounds, narrative choices, and transitions that take so many listens to discover.

For me their first album (Undertow) is about struggling with abuse and addiction. Their second album (Aenima) is mostly about facing the real world and feelings that was being hidden from in Undertow and not liking it. Third Eye closes it with a spiritual awakening which leads into their third album (Lateralus) which opens with letting go of the grudge and carries on to the realization that all life is one and all this pain is an illusion. Concept albums are cool. But who else has done a concept discography?

To me, "prying open my third eye" means that he (the character of the song) has been trying to force his way to enlightenment through drugs "smoke" and thought "reason". Which is a fight, the use of force, and therefore a losing battle. He leaves it to the listener to find the easy way in the wake of the song; instinct, relax, allow.

I think the narrator, Maynard I suppose, experiences an ego death through a heavy dose of psychedelics, completely obliterating the lens through which he views himself in the world.. and instead reverting to the innocence of childhood for a fleeting glimpse. Almost remote viewing the moment life went from playing in the dirt to being plugged into the system/society, directly witnessing your own fall from innocence, catching a glimpse of it and pleading to himself to come back out to play, not to run away into ego and the stressors of life and this world. Having that dissociation from reality/time, and almost traveling inter-dimensionally to feel all time at once is the 3rd eye.

His two sides thought of the other.....
One - Chasing the tale of dogma
Other- chasing smoke (weed, drugs) and reason.
Bring the two together to become enlightened !
    Tale of dogma
    Tail of dogma
    Just fucken brilliant !

I would have to sit down and really calculate to produce an estimate of how many times I have listened to this song. It's a bunch. I've seen it live 4 times I think over the years. It's still my favorite by them.

To me this song is basically describing a DMT trip. Prying open my third eye. The whole thing is about talking to DMT entities and other related hallucinations.

I think you are the first reactor to get this song right esp the thing about the last song overview of the whole album.

Great video. Thanks Doug. Make sure to check out the Salival version of this if you haven't. My preferred version, although this still rocks too.

Comedians opening for metal/rock bands have become way more common. Metal festivals always have comedy shows now. Big Jay Oakerson opened for Korn for an entire tour one year.

I've got a wild suggestion for you. It's one of those albums where you have to listen to it all the way through from start to finish, and can't just pick out random songs.
The album is called "Sol Niger Within" by Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects. Worth a listen, even if it's not on camera.

May I suggest you to look the new work of Queens of the Stone Age? I'm so curious to see what you think about it...

Bill Hicks was on Letterman a number of times. the last time he did a set they show censored Bill and did not air it.
Later on Letterman had Bill's mother on the show after Hicks had passed and the audience watched the set Bill had done then.
pretty sure Bill had an album called Arizona Bay and tool references that in the song Aenima.

Chris Pitman on the synths in this song. He would join Guns n roses in 1998 and stay there until 2015. Contributed a lot to the Chinese Democracy album and played over 350 shows across the globe with them.

Such an incredible album. I full listen would be cool. Three of the songs on the album are just audio journeys you could say. The last one, (-) Ions, reminds me of the scene in Frankenstein when the monster is being created. The sound of storms and electricity. There is even a song in German. To me, being in German it sounds like the song is about something harsh but it's really a very wholesome song. Great reaction as always Doug.
