  • I bought this 1976 Johnson snowmobile from a junkyard probably 10 years ago. It had potential then. not so sure now. let's see if we can revive it to it's former glory.

I have been around snowmobiles since 1981, and I have to say that I have never seen a snowmobile engine with the recoil, mag and fan on the clutch side, That stator has to be a real pain to access. Nice job on figuring out the spark issue. Sometimes all it takes is "that one wire" to pooch up the works.
Interesting recoil setup on that machine as well. Seems like pretty much everything in that engine compartment is unique. Interesting machine, to be sure.
I wonder if that carb has a built-in fuel pump. If so, that mystery fitting on top might be a pulse line, which connects to the crankcase. That pulse is what operates the pump. The bottom fitting is probably a bowl drain to get water out. (My Indy has one of those on each carb. They collect water and other sediments, instead of running them into the carb/engine.)
    - (Edit) - Oops. Should have waited until the end of the video before writing this part. I see you sorted out what that fitting on top of the carb is for..
This is proving to be an interesting project.

Hey thanks for watching! Yeah the engine design was very unique. The Engineers at OMC really seemed to push the design of their engines to attempt to compete with other manufacturers of the era. They were ahead of the game from 1965-probably 1972. Then the other manufacturers(arctic cat, ski doo, polaris, etc) started putting the inline twin engines and triples in their engines rapidly outperforming omc machines in speed and maneuverability. However, until 1973 OMC put electric start and reverse on their select models starting in 1968. The redesign in 1974 to the style in this video had a lot of flaws. They ran great when they ran I am told by those who were there but when they didn't? Yeah. . .anyhow, sorry for the long reply. Glad you enjoyed the video.

@@delmontindustriesltd7501 No need to apologize for the long reply. I left a rather lengthy comment too, LOL. Isn't that the truth about any sled out there? They run great...when they do run, LOL.😂 I put a little time and work into my '95 Indy 440 in late 2022, and it really paid off. Even made a few videos of the work. Still finicky to start (typical Polaris) but once running, it is good for the day.
I can definitely see some issues in the engine design of this era of Johnson machines. Looks like the primary clutch would have to come off in order to work on anything or replace the fan belt, etc. I find the recoil rather interesting with its bendix style gear and the rope that runs across the carb side of the engine.
All of that aside, it did sound pretty healthy when it started for you. Took a lot of work (and patience) to get to that point, but hearing that 440 come to life was definitely a very cool thing. Will be interesting to see how it runs once the carb is fully functional again.
Speaking of long replies, LOL.😅 Anyways, thanks for the response. Best luck to you as you continue working on this machine.

Thanks. I'm waiting on parts, but hopefully it'll be a runner soon. Of course now that all the snow is melting. . .

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. She'll be flying next time around!

Exactly! I've got some parts on order but I think she'll go. It's sadly too cold to work in the shop plus there's 2 feet of snow on the ground. Too deep to ride on, haha. Thanks for watching!!

I just started watching this video. I only want to say you will get a lot of negative comments, don't listen to them. As long as you enjoy do this keep it up. CZcams is a marathon not a sprint. You got yourself a new sub.

Thanks for the words. I do this for fun. If someone doesn't like it, they can keep scrolling as far as I am concerned. If someone learns something, then I have succeeded in my venture. Even if they learned what not to do. Thanks for watching!
