  • On the last day of this wasted parliament, the many retiring MPs got to say their goodbyes. Quite a few Tory MPs had harsh words for their colleagues.

    I am 68 and been interested in politics since the 1964 election. I was 8. ! Im all my years this is the worst Parliament ever. The second worst was the 2017-2019 Parliament. The arrogance of the opposition leader not to coalesce around a unity leader and depose the Tories was criminal. We could have had a second referendum and possibly no Brexit. !

That's a massive mountain to climb, which is why every single vote counts in order to oust the renegade Tori£s. Then we must reform our crap electoral system which is grossly undemocratic and biased towards the Ruling Class. Which is why they developed and imposed it on us in the first place.

    • @trnogger
      @trnogger Před 21 dnem

      Yeah, nice idea. Just doesn't work. Because politics is run by people with "life experience" or in other words, people who are way too old to a) understand the issues of the younger generation or b) care what happens 20 years in the future. And with less and less children being born, the younger become less and less compared to the olders, so even if there were a politician with young people's issues at heart, they would be ousted by the older voters for the same reasons. Why should young voters even bother when they know that they are massively outnumbered by egotistical old farts who don't give a fuck about the future? And this has already been going on for generations and after decades of prioritising the old over the young, the young are now at such an incredible disadvantage that realistically, there is no political way they can get out of this mess.

    Some key priorities for Starmers' first term IMHO , AND crucially ,to ensure the Tories NEVER again gain power with a minority vote ,will be electoral reform in the form of scrapping recent vot er ID (no justification or evidence of fraud and there never was !) reduce the voting age for general and local elections to 16 (old enough to work, pay taxes, serve in our armed forces, then they are old enough to be enfranchised ! etc) and restore boundary changes where appropriate (demographically etc) .and, if course replace FPTP with a form of PR.
    Media and Press reform (Levenson on steroids) banning foreign ownership of newspapers and strong regulation of so called 'news' channels re impartiality and bias including the depoliticisation of BBC as part of it'd new charter in 2027 ie no PM of any party can appoint or endorse future DGs or influence or lobby for BBC governors as they can now (eg., Johnson, in return for facilitating a large personal loan secured 'help' from then candidate for Chairman Richard Sharp...surprise surprise he was appointed as Chair !). Root and branch reform of Ofcom and their powers of sanction...long overdue !
    Include regarding regulators Ofgen and Ofwat AND introduce a rolling buy back of ALL utilities... Water, Rail and Energy !
    And reinstate bursary grants for nursing and a new 'independent' and suitably qualified body to oversee reform of Social Care integrating it effectively into our NHS including pay rates and removing private exploitation if care both domiciliary and home care. I would also introduce sweeping changes to Carers benefits (Carers UK have an excellent manifesto that should be implemented asap ), scrap Universal Credit and punitive sanctions and reform rules on claiming sickness and disability benefits scraping the heinous work capability assessments relying more on GPs and consultants reports as before, but with greater real and targeted support for those who which to regain their independence and access to employment and services. Lastly introduce nationally at secondary school upwards the teaching of institutions , governance and how parliament works, what used to be called 'Civics'in the past !
    With the above changes will come the possibility of rejoining eventually the Single Market and Customs Union...full EU membership, as Phil rightly points out, sadly may take a decade or more, but we can begin the process towards that goal much sooner having implemented the necessary reforms above !
    Vote Tactically folks and reduce the Tories to third party status or less !.

    Petitions end and it is tgen up to the Petitions Committee to decide what to discuss in the next session. They have sent a standard email to this effect.

    Re Clarke, you normally have opinions so stand up and say he should be penalised for what he did and losing a title does not really punish him. They should be jailed. Yes, Lords should be scrapped. Just have a cross-section committee and meet monthly in a McDonald's.

    The jobs market is going to be flooded with Tory MPs looking for new jobs. OK, some are of retirement age, but many (like Gove and Greg Clark) are not. I guess they’ll pick up some cosy part-time directorships. Am I weeping for them? Not f*****g likely - they permitted the car crash that we’ve all suffered the consequences of since 2010. It took 90 days for my partner’s cancer treatment to start last year. Thankfully, he was successfully treated by lovely caring people and a great surgeon - no thanks to the Tory shambles of a government!

    I'll wait for the manifesto before I'll form any opinion. The simple fact about brexit is it's the only thing which will produce real results if labour can manage to get us that provisional membership in the way that Greece had when I lived there for the second time. To be blunt, screw the electorate, most of them don't have the intelect of breeze blocks and look how well it went the last couple of times they got their way. We got brexit and the last litany of tory oligarchs, kleptocrats and grifters who have left the uk's society, culture (or what passes for one) and economy in tatters. Just get in there early in a term, and, to paraphrase Reeves, laser focus on the things that will make noticeable improvements in the plebs lives. Otherwise I worry that we're looking at a one and a half term reign or two at best.
    I'm not buying any more jam tomorrow lines, I've been fed that since 1979.
    And fyi Phil, it is a fact that the cabbages will vote labour not because Starmer has rebuilt labour but the tories are son hated quite rightly. I do hope PR, if labour bring it in, put an end to tribal voting which is moronic. And please stop feeding the bs that it would take decades to join the EU but, that said you clearly know as well as me that labour's grip on power is as tenuous as I have said.
