  • hello everyone! this is a video of my experience knitting a tiny wool scarf and then dyeing it with onion skins. This was my first time dyeing wool (or anything actually) so it was kind of an experiment. I got all the information about dyeing with onion skins from this very helpful blog:
    ✦ themazi.com/bl...
    ✦ themazi.com/bl...
    A few notes
    - I used 100% wool (50g/100m) and 4.5mm needles
    - The scarf is knit in garter stitch
    - I soaked the scarf in the washing powder water (scouring) for about 2 hours and then rinsed
    - I used alum powder as a mordant, the blog post says to use cream of tartar as well for wool but I couldn't find any in my local stores
    - I brought the alum water to a gentle simmer then turned off the heat and soaked the scarf for about 1.5 hours and wrung but didn't rinse before dyeing
    - I simmered the onion skins for about 40 minutes
    - After gentling simmering for about 30-40 minutes, I soaked the scarf in the dye bath over night
Let me know what you think! I am very happy with the colour, it's beautiful and bright but looks natural and earthy too. I'm excited to try some more natural dyeing in the future (:

I now know what 20 grams of onion skins look like. Nice vid. I know other things as well. Nice haircut.
