I had a Muslim friend. One day he was telling me how people needed to understand that moderate Muslim countries exist like Malaysia. I responded by truthfully reminding him that preaching Christianity to a Muslim in Malaysia is punishable by prison. I said moderates don’t jail people for preaching their faith. growing up in Malaysia as a Sikh, I had two Muslim Indian friends. We are like brothers but I always knew that the friendship relied on me never question their faith or even asking too many questions about Islamic history. This was a compromise I was willing to make. But I will admit, I prefer my Sikh, Buddhist and Hindu friends in Malaysia.

I walked home from school with my muslim friend in 1999 Midlands, I remember because I was in year 9, he told me about the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan and that the soldiers of Islam will soon attack the west to bring in the eventual takeover of the west. I’m an ex Muslim and I lived with Muslims, everything she says is true. I look at my own native country Somalia for instance. We have lost our culture to Islam. For instance all Somali names are Arabic names for example. The issue I have with Islam is because it’s not only a religion but also a political ideology at the same time .

This chilling message was virulently expressed by a dozen imams in mosques across England, at the Friday prayers on Oct 27, when they vehemently called upon attendees that “unbelievers have to be wiped out”.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali, in her book, Infidel: My Life, which was published in 2007, informs us that, as a child she was indoctrinated that “it’s the duty of all Muslims to either convert others to accept, and submit to Islam or, for them to be eradicated”.
Again, this is indisputably proven with the hordes of protestors who have marched in the pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel/anti-America rallies in Western countries, with them openly calling for a new intifada. So, with imams in Mosques in Britain, and also Australia, calling for “unbelievers to be wiped out” or, for Muslims to join an intifada, proves beyond any doubt that, they are totally incompatible with integrating into liberal Western cultures.

Ibn Hisham (d. 833 CE) was an esteemed ancient Muslim scholar who edited the authoritative biography of Muhammad by Ibn Ishaq. In his esteemed work known as Al Rod Al Anf, Volume 2, page 182, he recorded the following words of Muhammad. Addressing the Muslims, Muhammad said:
“You see Allah will soon make you inherit their land, their treasures and make you sleep with their women.” (Lit: make their women beds for you).
For Muslims who say that they only believe in the Qur’an, we have news for them. We will let Allah testify why the women were spared:
Surah 33:50: O Prophet! We have made lawful to you your wives whom you have given their dowries, and those whom your right hand possesses out of those whom Allah has given to you as prisoners of war.

⚠️ Regarding Islam, I’d like to share something important that I’ve learned. It’s taken me years to finally realize this......I think I’ve resisted coming to this conclusion - It was a big pill to swallow. Islam is not evil due to direct manipulation and control by rogue terrorist groups and extremists - It’s core doctrine is evil in and of itself.
There are many many people in the world who call themselves Muslims. I’ve met some over the years - Many of them have kind souls. You could say they are the ‘Moderates’. There may be Moderate Muslims, unfortunately there is no such thing as Moderate Islam. I’ve realized that there is no definitive line in the sand within Islam that a Moderate Muslim can lean against that will prevent them from being forced to become a ‘true Muslim’ (Shariah-adherent).
The Moderates have no logical or doctrine-based leg to stand on. They have no argument that supersedes what the Islamic scholars, and the core doctrine demand. It doesn’t matter what your Muslim neighbor interprets Islam to be. A Muslim doesn’t make Islam, rather Islam makes the Muslim. Someone not supporting the violent oppressive parts of Islam doesn’t mean they’re following a different version; it simply means they’re not adherent to what Islam requires.
For all those who say Islam can be interpreted in a peaceful and virtuous manner, there’s one question I have for them - Where is this peaceful ‘version’ taught? Where is it officially codified? Where can I learn about it from an authorized source?
A shocker for me was that Islam is not just religion. As stated in the textbook ‘What Islam Is All About’, which is widely used throughout Islamic schools in the US, Islam is a complete way of life: Religious, Legal, Political, Social, Military, and Economic. If it was religion only, I wouldn’t care what it teaches - To each their own. But when a political and legal system starts determining what happens to the lives of outsiders (non-Muslims), that’s where I have a problem.
There are only 2 examples in all of world history that have been able to bounce back after being conquered by Islam: Spain and one other that I can’t recall. All others subjected to it have eventually fallen to be ruled over by Islam. Individual Muslims may be wonderful and non-threatening. But history speaks for itself when it comes to the overall long term effect when large groups of Muslims populate a society - Look at the past 1400 years. I realize this may seem harsh, but it’s just the truth. My motivation isn’t to spread hate, but rather to help wake people up to the reality of all this.
I’m not a Muslim. I don’t speak Arabic. I haven’t been to Mecca. Everything I’ve mentioned above comes from the same things found in authoritative Islamic texts and what’s taught in Islamic schools throughout the US and all over the planet. You’re all free to find out for yourself.

When I was in my 20s, I used to visit a really good Kebab shop near shepherd bush in London. The owner was nice, the food was good. One day was chatting with the owner and he explained he was Muslim and had 3 daughters. I asked him (as I was curious) what he would think if someone like me were to date one of his daughters. I explained I had a very good job and was respectful of women. He just smiled at me a shook his head and carried on with his work. When I mentioned this to friends they tried to shrug it off or ask me why I was asking in the first place, it was in appropriate etc. But the point is that this man was living amongst us and would never for a moment countenance the idea of one of his Muslim daughters in a relationship with a white non Muslim. Thats what bothered me, and I never necessarily would have dated his daughters, it was the principle. I will take your money and your hospitality, but I don’t want anything to do with you. Thats what it seems like and is my experience relating to Muslims in the uk

An ex-muslim friend of mine was born in Saudi Arabia, the 'country of islam.' He told me how his father had been dragged away from their family infront of his mother and himself when he was only 5-7 years old from police in Saudi. At age 18 during my reading of an English translation of the Koran that my father had bought from a Turkish Muslim bookshop, I realised very quickly that despite the washed down version of Islam we Sunis live by, Islam is very much a religion written by a man for men. I work in the Middle East I am in Saudi right now. I have worked around this region on and off for 40 years, including Iraq, Kuwait, UAE, and Iran. I have also worked in SE Asian countries Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar etc. I can categorically say without hesitation the West and particularly the Left have no idea what they are getting themselves into. I have listened to local colleagues (that are utterly polite to my face) talk about me in their own language (not knowing I understand) . I will not say here what I have heard, however suffice is to say that as a none believer you will always be a Kafir. Likewise people I have lived and worked with for years will simply not eat in my home or be comfortable because its the home of a Kafir. The barrier is always there and it will not go away just because you wish it, the liberal ideas of the West will not be accepted its as simple as that. I have very good colleagues in this part of the world and others, however that does not mean that I am accepted as another believer would be. The barrier will always be their. The result of all this will not be the one they desire, its a deeper seated issue than is appreciated.

I've witnessed misogyny from muslim men on many occasions. I used to work in a university and my office could only be reached by going through the 'multi faith' centre. On Friday afternoons, the building was full with male muslims and they would not let me walk through. I would try to get through the crowd with a polite 'excuse me please', but was always given looks of derision and hatred, no-one would make way for me to get through. It was very intimidating. I also once had to walk in the road because three muslim men would not stand back to let me pass on the pavement.

I was once married to a muslim. He gambled and drank didnt pray didnt fast. One Sunday he arranged without my knowledge an Imam to visit friends of his who we were going to have lunch with. This was for me to become a muslim. When we arrived i was told to have a bath and i said but i have already had a shower. Then my husbands friend said to me do you know whats happening today when i replied no he got very angry with my husband but not as angry as i got. I said NO way would i convert and especially not to Islam. Over my dead body. There was trouble when we got back home. I had a Muslim friend who was a really sweet person and I just didn’t want to accept that she had deeply rooted antisemitism which she tried to gloss over every time we had an honest conversation. Once I remember I attended a picnic with her and her friends from their Muslim school and she told me to hide my Magen David (star of David necklace) and that I shouldn’t say that I’m Jewish. I was shocked and did what she said. But I never felt safe again since that day. This happened some years ago in Bonn, Germany. Since the Israel-Hamas war broke out I cut her finally out of my life. They weren't even dating when I first met them in a group of young people, and then just months later, I heard they were getting married. Then I would see them all buttoned up in church once married. They started to dress differently even to pop out to the shops. No trousers or casual clothes. These are the sort of women who take a handbag and wear dress shoes and a skirt or dress on a guided nature walk.
Many of these women later got divorced as the world was moving on from the 90s while they had to revert to the 50s and early to mid 60s. They would conceive as soon as they were married and if not pregnant within a year of marriage it would be because they or their husband had difficulty in conceiving.

I was in a forced arranged marriage at 17 (Hasidic). This whole conversation is so relatable and triggering but also somehow comforting at the same time.
The WHOLE conversation? Ys, there are parallels in marriage and divorce issues, but there are also extremely important differences. Unless you belonged to some extremely small obscure unknown sect, you wouldn't be brutally murdered for disobeying. You'd be excommunicated, shunned, stuff that all cults do. But you wouldn't have encountered the extreme violent world dominance ideology that exists in Islam.
Andrew is not technically wrong when he says "this exists in the Jewish community", but in this context it's still a bit disengenuous. It happens in Hassidic sects that most Jews, also the vast majority of religious Jews, have nothing to do with whatsoever. I think it's because if you try to directly criticize any believer they can go on defense mode and other people around them who simply hate people from different cultures can also target them and justify it. But criticising a religion makes people defend it by showing a good version of it and even push them to behave more progressive and liberal, and that's how actually we can change a society.

I’m a gay ex-Muslim, a bit older than Nuriyah, and got involved with ex-Muslim activism about ten years ago. I've always been a strong advocate for free speech. I was even nearly arrested for ‘Islamophobic hate speech’ during my protests against the East London Mosque. Saying that, watching anti-Muslim bigotry rise in recent years has been unsettling. This interview kinda worries me/make it clear to me the need to distinguish between spurious charges of Islamophobia and genuine anti-Muslim bigotry, but it seems like we are yet to fully grasp this-ex-Muslims, non-Muslims, and Muslims alike.
It's heartening to see younger ex-Muslims like Nuriyah speaking up. I really relate to her-she's rightfully angry, and her experience/insights are definitely representative of a growing form of Islamic practice. But for those watching who might not be familiar with these perspectives, especially if you're not Muslim, you might find it hard to place her views. I'd like to give another perspective, as well as a non-London one. I grew up in a rural town in the West Midlands, switching between an extremely rural, conservative and white British environment to an Islamic after-school madrassah/brum community that was quite extremist. This experience gave me a unique view into both the conservative British and Muslim worlds. Nuriyah and Andrew discuss the prevalence of the belief about pedo muhammad, and asks for a generalised number of people that believe it, and nuriyah responds about how it is fundamental in the religion/hadith. That belief is widespread, but it's not the whole story.
Whenever you hear a question about how worried we should be about what Muslims think, remember, we can only speak from our own experiences. Interpretations of religious texts are vast and multifaceted, and I'm not saying this to be civil but because it's the truth, and otherwise we end up only giving more power to the extremists. While it's true that beliefs like Aisha's young age and other reprehensible views are indeed lurking, acknowledging that doesn't mean we should then prejudge an individual's character or beliefs, or deny other interpretations can exist. We both stifle progress within muslim communities, and don't show the whole picture when we do.
Regarding the belief in young Aisha, one of the first things that shook my faith happened in secondary school when my classmates would make jokes about Muhammad, calling him a pedo, which I denied fiercely. But later, at madrassah, a teacher told me some hadiths claim Aisha was as young as four. I was horrified. It's true, many Muslims, particularly Sunnis, do hold the belief that Aisha was very young, among other regressive views, and in a way it is getting worse. I also met Muslims who tried to justify it by saying it was a different time or that puberty started younger back then, which I still found reprehensible. But I also met a lot of genuinely ordinary/progressive/morally good muslims that argued the hadith was wrong, inauthentic, and that she was older, and a lot of muslims (like a lot of secular jews or christians) who do not really care/know, but still consider themselves part of the faith.
As I grew older/met more people, I also learned there are also 'Qur'an aloners' who reject the hadith altogether. And it wasn't until I left Islam that I realized Shias aren't fond of Aisha and often reject these hadiths/narratives, even in their classical sources. I also discovered the rich/british tradition of historical-critical scholarship, and Dr. Joshua Little, an Oxford secular scholar who's dedicated his career to studying the Aisha hadith, and shows convincing evidence for why the young Aisha hadith were a much much later innovation, possibly to retroactively legitimize Aisha’s standing amongst contemporary rival factions. His work shows just how much narratives can evolve, and that like other religions the founding stories are largely unevidenced/have a lot of myth, which means as exmulims we shouldn't take these classical hadiths as fact, and by doing so we play into ahistorical/'fundamentalist' narratives. Islam was originally a monotheistic revivalist movement that merged into/continued the Roman and Persian states, which in many ways moderated and shaped its practice, and that's been the case ever since, there's no such thing as 'pure islam'. Despite resistance to seeing culture and religion as intertwined, Islam, like any faith, requires a cultural substrate.
Understanding what Islam is, is just as much about history, and understanding extremism among Muslims today is more complex than just quoting hadiths/verses. For instance, the Pakistani community is a unique undercurrent in british-muslims, with extremism and facing anti-muslim bigotry, which is often ignored. The racism and 'paki-bashing' that was rampant decades ago in England left deep scars, and encouraged even more cultural alienation, leading many to adopt a stronger Muslim identity than their parents, and an undercurrent of anti-paki sentiment encouraged cultural separation. This wasn't common in that generation, where full hijabs weren’t widely worn. Pakistan itself founded on an identity crisis, which was especially magnified in the diaspora, has often pushed Pakistanis to look back to no culture but an ahistorical form of Islam.
Pakistani identity in Britain is uniquely marked by a sense of cultural dislocation, more so than among Arabs, Persians, etc. This lack of a cultural substrate has made british-pakstanis, perhaps the most culturally 'lost'. Dawah and Speakers' Corner enthusiasts, influenced by a blend of Saudi Wahhabism, which has been historically supported by the British state. There is also a history of Arab racism and superiority over south asians, which has given british-pakstanis even more of an identity complex. And now social media algorithms/global wahhabism are homogenising Islam and which is now also combining with the manosphere, and are shaping a new interpretation of the faith. This version exploits the current mental health crisis among youth, tying their angst to faith in ways that are particularly damaging. Our criticism of Islam, should include looking at at these specific contexts if we want to effectively counteract it. It's also interesting that Nuriyah had a more International experience in Saudi, a big part of UK extremism is the ghettoization.
If we want to fight extremism, we need to look at all these issues, and while looking at sources is helpful, it isn't enough. It would be similar to how Secular Jews relate to Hasidim (or ultra-zionism), there are also halachic courts in the UK, and terrible stuff in the hasidic jewish sources, or done by Israel, and in their way they are faithful to their sources and traditions as they see them. But we shouldn't then use that say the 'real' form of judaism is Hasidim, conflate jews and actions of Israel, or be paranoid/negative about hasidim/Israelis as people.
I still don't like Islam as a religion and how it's practiced - and I do believe there are uniquely worrying aspects exclusive to Islam - but even as an exmuslim, it's easy to come out of that and fall easily for a overbroad anti-muslim narrative (I'm not including Andrew in this), given those that are are often more (superficially) supportive of exmuslims and especially when the left rejects us too. But it's easy to get swept up the other direction, muslims not agreeing with aspects of British Foreign policy, which may indeed be justified, shouldn't be elided to say to say muslims that critique it are not loyal (there may indeed be those who do and are, but again we should disaggregate it). We should still aim for judging individuals for their character and tolerant of ordinary muslims, and push against tribalism/division, which ends up obscuring the underlying issues. And ultimately what is our goal if not to protect an open/free society, and to advocate for real people's issues without being slaves to ideology.

I am a white, American, woman and I have been exposed to Muslim beliefs and I saw such a lack of care for women. I was mistreated so badly, then my family had no support for me and often called me racist, even though they had no idea what I was seeing and going through. I learned that even though I'm not religious and don't practice Catholicism, I had to reiterate that I am Christian to combat Muslim beliefs and behavior toward me. I just had to learn that it doesn't matter culture or religion, women are second class citizens and don't matter. We in the U.S. have fought so hard for our rights and voice and just willing to hand it all over. Its repugnant.
