SODASHI ソダシ, a pure white thoroughbred racehorse, has quickly become an internet sensation, in addition to being a champion on the racetrack - winning G1 races including the Sapporo Kinen, previously won by the likes of Normcore ノームコア and Admire Moon アドマイヤムーン, and the Oka Sho, previously won by Gentildonna ジェンティルドンナ, Almond Eye アーモンドアイ, Gran Alegria グランアレグリア and Daring Tact デアリングタクト.
SODASHI is by Jurofune クロフネ and out of Buchiko ブチコ and is trained by Naosuke Sugai. In 2020, she won the JRA Award for Best Two-Year-Old Filly.

Sodashi proving that shes not just a sprinter. Everybody thought that Sodashi couldn't handle 2000m+ after getting 8th at the Oaks, but she just proved them wrong and revived the double crown dream. Sapporo Kinen might have been a G2, but the competition was G1 level. Loves Only You is a terrific horse and Blast Onepiece was an Arima Kinen winner and Colt of the Year in 2018.
I didn't realize Loves Only You was in that race. I can't follow the race call in Japanese. Loves Only You just missed winning the Dubai Sheema in a three-horse blanket finish behind Mishriff and Chrono Genesis. The others were far back. She won the QE II Cup at Sha Tin, handily beating Magical if I recall. This white wonder is not just beautiful, she's a world-class star who could be getting better.
Golden Sixty will kill Sodashi
The only things that stands between Sodashi and that double crown is Satono Reinas and Uberleben. Satono Reinas might not have her G1 win yet but the horse is talented and had a respectable 5th in a very close Japanese Derby. Uberleben is also a fantastic horse with a convincing win in the Japanese Oaks. All 3 of these fillies will become the cornerstone of Japan racing in the next few years.

My heart thrills watching her! So refreshing to see a different colored horse -- always wondered why there wasn't more color diversity in thoroughbreds.
On the colour diversity, in short: most world-class racehorses go back to the same very limited ancestor pool - and through further selective interbreeding through the generations, a lot of them are more or less related these days. If you look at their pedigrees you'll often notice that a couple of names are in there multiple times. For example, the mother's grandfather was also the father's great-grandfather. Things like that. Limits the pool of genetic diversity. Which is wanted to pass down the talent, but automatically also leads to repeating colours eventually. Mutations can occur, of course, but would be very rare by nature. Hope that clears it up a bit. :)
@EmeraldDunDreki Sodashi is not grey, but white, there’s a mutation in her gene that resulted in her pink skin and white hair. This gene is passed from her grandmother. Her mother Pochiko (which means, spotted) has black spots on her white fur. White horses can indeed become good racehorses because this gene only changes their appearance, but won’t affect their racing ability. Before her several white racehorses had won races, including her mother. However, if a male white horse mates with a female one, the gene mutation will not be controllable, and the fetus will likely has severe health problems. If one of the parents is a white horse, then the possibility of getting a white infant will be 50%. So that’s the reason why pure white horses are so rare. And those who can win G1 is even rarer. Right now Sodashi is the only white horse in the world who has ever won a G1. (she got 3 since her debut)

Cause they breed em for speed not color....is very non subjective that way...they also are not bred for looks but most of them are quite beautiful regardless.
And as someone below points out...they are almost all related now regardless being so specialized.

ユーバーレーベンはオークス後に軽傷とはいえ屈腱周囲炎になったし、サトノレイナスは(放牧でだけど)トモを骨折という珍しい故障になったし。

桜花賞はイギリスの1000ギニーステークス(芝 1マイル)が元になってるので、英語表記もそれに倣っているそうです。
ダービーやオークスが競馬界の世界共通語であるように、1000ギニーも世界共通語ですからね。
「Japanese 1000 Guineas」の勝ち馬と紹介されれば、ソダシがチャンピオンホースのうちの一頭だと世界中の競馬関係者に理解されるので、そういう意味でも桜花賞を勝ったことは物凄く大きいことだったと思います。
札幌記念で、ブラストワンピースが競りかけてきても抜かせないあたり、気持ちの強い馬なのだと思う。
桜花賞を勝っている時点でスピード能力も高いでしょうし、
この後の秋華賞や、来年のヴィクトリアマイルでも期待したい。
日本の競馬界にとって、白毛だからというだけでなく、本当に貴重な馬。

In recent years, a number of white horses have been born in Japan, but they are inherited from a single horse, not from albino. The horse's name is Shirayukihime(Snow White), and she is said to be a mutation, not an albino.
Unlike gray horses, white horses is white from birth and often has black spots like Sodashi's mother, Buchiko.
Thank for that, I've noticed several "white" TB is Japan.
I wondered which line carried the Dominant white. I love equine color genetics.

@@elizabethferguson7002 It's a Dominant White Gene. A KIT mutation identified as W14. They're rare but Thoroughbred actually have a lot of them (some that are extinct too).

Watched some great horses but never seen such a beautiful horse in 23 years of following horse racing.
@@harpalchauhan428 My first beloved thoroughbred was the great Gray Ghost called Native Dancer. His only loss was by a nose but it was in the most famous race called the Kentucky Derby in 1953. Native Dancer appears many times in Sodashi's pedigree.

Looked up her pedigree, she’s got some big names in her background; Sunday Silence, Mr. Prospector, and EVEN the Great Northern Dancer. This Horse is NO Joke......
I love this info as the big question for me always is, where in her pedigree did she get that color?
...and so many of these horses are (forgive the pun) dark.
All the same almost all racehorses these days has a bit of Northern Dancer in them ... He was an extraordinarily popular and successful sire.
That's a lot of great names in her background no wonder she's such a great race horse and beautiful besides being smart and fast
@@kathleenmurphy2379 and surprisingly, she’s white. Idk if it’s superstitious or there’s history behind it. But, most race horse breeders DONT want white horses believing them to be more injury prone. This was especially true with horses with With hooves. There are some who believe white hooves are softer the pigmented hooves, and thus more susceptible to splitting.
There was a horse who raced mostly west coast, named Flying Paster( white horse) won 13 IN a ROW @ Santa Anita and Golden Gate and maybe Los Alametos. I was at Santa Anita for many but was there for 14th. They bet him down to 1-5, he came in 9th out of 9 horses......the fix was in.....

She now adds to her wins by scoring in the Victoria Mile. Pushing past the lead horse when it seemed the only competition would be for second and third place.

Thanks for the upload. Regarding the video description... Sodashi's sire is Kurofune (USA) (literally, "black ship"), a dual G1 winner, not Jurofune. Sapporo Kinen is a GII, not a GI.
By the way, Sodashi's dam, Buchiko (JPN), and granddam, Shirayukihime (JPN), are white, and Kurofune (USA) is gray.
NupoDyna You have good information except Buchiko has black spots on a white background, much like a Dalmatian dog. I am a fan from the USA.
We haven't gotten many white thoroughbreds into the races here and the ones who have raced have not done very well.
Sunday Silence, an American thoroughbred, is in the ancestry of your beautiful white and spotted horses, although he was black. Sayonara.
@@vernonfrance2974 Right. Buchiko has bay color spots ("buchi" means pint), but she is pedigree-registered in the studbook as white (not gray) in accordance with her base color. Her dam, Shirayukihime's, "shira-yuki" means snow white and "hime" means Princess.

Did you know that a Kentucky Derby Winner, Sunday Silence, who was black in color, is one of their ancestors? He was Shirayukihime's sire.
@@vernonfrance2974 This is probably because the Thoroughbred registry does not indicate leopard spots or other pint patterns as coat color. Gray horses also gradually turn white as they get older, but their skin is usually black.
Yep. Sunday Silence is the greatest stallion that ever stood in Japan. He was champion 13 times each in the sire and broodmare-sire rankings. Unusually for a stallion, his adorable stuffed animals and other merchandise were very popular. Those of caps and T-shirts were very stylish, with white dyed out to represent the shape of the blaze markings running from his forehead to the bridge of his nose over an all-black background, like the Nike logo.
Shirayukihime's dam, Wave Wind (USA) is bay colored, so Shirayukihime's coat color is considered a mutation.
Kurohune is a Japanese dirt legend known as the *White* Secretariat, and it is impossible for a Kurohune foal to win a major prize over 2,000 meters on the grass!
I love that Japanese racing shows unusually colored horses not seen in American racing.
Horse actually has true winners talent. Showed doesn’t like to follow, especially in 1st race. And in true winner talent, it gives its all in closing. Very curious as to its blood lines, being white AND talented.
