Canada was still a part of the British empire up until 1982. It gained autonomy in 1931 under the Statute of Westminister, but the UK still held the right to amend the constitution, making it still part of the British Empire. It wasn’t until the Canadian House of Commons, on the 2nd of December, 1981, approved Trudeau’s constitutional reform resolution that Canada took its final step towards independence, where eventually Queen Elizabeth ll declared Canada, on the 17th of April, 1982, as an officially independent country from the empire.

@@AmirSatt, Canada is it’s own independent monarchy. The only connection it has to the UK these days is its shared history and ruled by the same queen, but the queen is only a figurehead.

When referring to the empire it is implied that the dominions and protectorates under almost direct rule or installed friendly governance are part of the empire. You don't need to specify that it includes the likes of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the British Raj, Egypt and so on.

Zimbabwe gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1980. Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) was not recognised by any country and, throughout the entire UDI period, it was still regarded as a British colony by the international community. When the Smith/Muzorewa regime collapsed in 1979, British rule was briefly restored to oversee elections with Zimbabwe officially receiving its independence a few months later.
