Or you force cops to carry insurance like many other professions. Screw up and your premiums go up. Screw up enough and no one will insure you. Make the insurance a tiny amount to start so that the excuse can't be made that it's an excessive financial burden. Everyone kind of gets a freebie to start by making it like $10 a month or something, but after three incidents, no insurance carrier would cover them and their law enforcement career would be over.

Would also be great if SCOTUS could once and for all establish that filming cops is 1A protected. As it stands only the odd numbered Circuits have decisions that have established that. The even-numbered Circuits have not, and with the rules around QI it’s almost impossible to get such cases. A nation that is only half free cannot stand.

Most people do not know how to handle authority and will abuse it. Many of those people are actually good people trying to do good in life and for their community. Their egos get bruised and they revert back to childhood, middle school bullying mentality and don't know how to deescalate or communicate, only puff up. These are human behaviors that can be brought to light, corrected, and improved upon by those willing to improve. Those not, can be spotted earlier than on the job and disqualified. And AP and WTW have many times stated they are about affecting change, so yes, this is definitely about training.

It will most definitely settle out of court for around 40-60 thousand. Close to half will go to the attorney and associated court costs, and he will likely walk out with around 25 grand. The point of the arrest was simply to get them out of there. The police could care less if they file a Federal suit since the town insurance carrier will foot the bill.

All of the training in the world won't change this. The VERY FIRST law is the 1st Amendment.....if they didn't learn that in high school or the police academy, more training isn't going to help them. Also think about what you just wrote. You want to give the police even more more when they have qualified immunity and YOU are the one that has to pay in this situation because they don't know the law ? (Just ignore that everyone there heard the law.)

I for one am looking forward to watching those jackass cops squirming on the stand answering question about their incompetence.
