      How are they with ground clearance? My Tacoma was just totaled and am looking for an alternative. The honda drivetrain claims similar durability/longevity. I've definitely made contact with the skid plates on the taco with the rutted trails I've had to drive. Worried the independent suspension and lack of skid plates could leave me stranded. Thanks in advance if you have the time to share your experience.

      I've had one about 3 weeks, I love it. This weekend I took at a trip to my parents and averaged 27.2 MPG. I was wondering how that would go because, going out there, it's a 3000 foot elevation change over 70 miles (4000' at my house, they live in the high desert at 7000'). Mileage going out was 23. Back at my house, it was 27.2 MPG for the whole round-trip (average 72 MPH). I think this speaks well for the Ridgeline.

      I got a 2023 two weeks ago. I was also surprised at the hills that it would go up when I was out in the desert. So far I'm real happy. It did well in the desert and on the interstate to get there. The interstate has a speed limit of 80 MPH, I ran with the cruise control on 85 MPH most of the time, and got it up to 95 on a couple of short stretches just to see how the truck felt (it was rock-solid). This is the best vehicle review I've seen. It covers all the aesthetic, mechanical, unique features, and performance characteristics at an appropriate level, while not wasting time on unnecessary stuff or information that's available from the manufacturer's site -- while being engaging, entertaining, and enjoyable.
    Making what might normally be a mundane review about a pickup truck with this high level of production value is a major accomplishment. Combine that with the revelation that Honda broke the mold for the vehicle segment in a way that brings important improvements to the typical body-on-frame approach, this presentation provides a 1-2 knockout punch for anyone looking to buy in this market -- very impressive! Should be the model for all reviews -- not just vehicles.

I downsized because I was tired of daily driving a school bus riddled with QC issues just so I could tow my 3,000lb boat/motor/trailer on weekends during the summer... I was also pretty done with the lack of quality from the big three overall, so I decided to try my first Asian. The Ridgeline tows great, it's damn stable, has no issues with slimy wet boat ramps, and it's hella comfy for long tows. Loving it so far.

    I'm really glad you reviewed the new Ridgeline, it just keeps getting better and better. It is a niche vehicle, you can't really call it a car or a truck in the traditional sense. BTW, it's front wheel drive until it senses slip, and then transfers power appropriately. I've owned a 2008 for about eight years now, it's been super reliable, very comfortable to drive, and has proven itself many times over. When they first came out I thought they were really weird, but after owning one for some time now it's a great vehicle. A lot of thought and innovations went into it, things that domestic manufacturers should take note of.

    • @owequitit
      @owequitit Před 2 lety +3

      The 2nd Gen i-VTM4 is a “high load” system that transfers power before there is slip. In fact, it transfers power to the rear more often than not.
      It is mechanically identical to SH-AWD, but is programmed for maximum traction and stability vs maximum handling. It’s really a great system, and quite a bit different from the 1st Gen VTM-4 system.

    Sarah, the understeer may have been a matter of not enough "beans." If you stay in the throttle, the AWD system actually overdrives the outside wheels in a curve to minimize understeer. If you had alternating understeer/oversteer, you were probably right on the edge of triggering that feature.

    First, you did a terrific job reviewing the Ridgeline. I have a 2017 now and had a 2007. I was a little confused with your rating system as you really liked the truck but it didn't rate that well otherwise. Sometimes I wish it had more towing capacity, but otherwise it does haul a lot for a smaller truck (one of the best payload capacities in its class). My complaints are that the rear doors don't open wide enough on the 2017 and that the tailgate/door does not lock with the rest of the truck. Both of these issues can be fairly easily remedied.

    I didnt get the idea of these trucks until I talked to a friend. If you live in the suburb, dont actually tow anything of significance, these are the vehicles for you. Probably do well with the over-landing crowd that dont really go offroad anywhere, but like fire roads and gravel trails. Honda made the Del Sol years ago, a FWD "sports car". This is essentially that idea in truck form.

      I had a bit of a scare this weekend. I was at Blackfoot Reservoir in Idaho and I wanted to stop and hike with my daughter a bit. There was a turnoff from the main road that dropped into a camping spot with a firepit. It was dry and sunny, didn't think too much about it. While we were hiking, a freak rainstorm came up and it rained hard for about 15 minutes. Back at the truck, what was no big deal before was now a steep, rutted, and very muddy mess and I was like, "Damn, can we get out of here?" I put the Ridgeline in mud mode and climbed up and out of it without really a problem. If we were in my wife's RAV4, we would've been screwed.

    Thank you, Sarah. I've often wondered about real changes that Honda has made to the Ridgeline over the years. Mine is a 2006 and lacks most of the electronic wizardry. I bought it in a rush to replace my F150 which was totaled by a nasty weather event. After 15 years and tons of snow seasoned with tons of salt, the Ridge has proven to be the most reliable truck that I have owned. Now that I am old, I expect that this is the last truck for me. I've done routine maintenance and the A/C needed a recharge last year. That's it. It always starts and it's still comfortable on the road. That's really what trucks are about. I have no interest in replacing it. Now, I will go out and give it the beans... again.
