I was listening and playing drums to the previous album at 16, when the band I was in played a show with zao in Cleveland. Small church, maybe 40 people there, this album just came out. Jesse Smith broke 5 drumsticks in the first song.( I rewatched the VHS continuously) drum set was sideways, no bassist. Bret Detar (juliana theory) and russ played gutar. LIFE CHANGING. I went on to play shows alongside zao and luti-kriss ( normajean) throughout the years. That night in Cleveland, I saw unrestrained passion. Spitting, screaming, broken sticks and cymbals missing chunks of metal. I learned there is nothing more impactful than passion without fear. Thank God for zao!
I'm 32 now and i still remember the time this album came out, even tho I'm not religious, i fell in love with the brutal heavy breakdowns and the one of a kind creepy screaming still to this day blows me away.. thank you so much for the amazing memories, Zao is most likely the band that paved the road to hardcore and metalcore for me
+road rubber mayhem mcqueen agreed! i would play this in my car to warm up my voice on the way to lead worship in my church! i would pull up system thumping, me screaming along and all the church members would look at me weird! but they looked at jesus weird too! haha!
Thank you zao, I was only aloud to get music from the Christian book store at that shitty point in life... this was a l loophole to get some fucking metal! That and focal point
Christians endure pain, suffering, rage and evil intensions sometimes too. I'm not a Christian, but no matter what our religion, we are all humans at the core and we are all capable of anything under the right circumstance.
I remember the first war, the way the sky burned The faces of angels destroyed I saw a third of Heaven's legion banished And the creation of hell I stood with my brothers and watched lucifer fall But now, my brothers aren't my brothers Turned away by a misrepresentation Stained glass and white washed tombs The hearts of those who spoke to you Were never homes the God they tried to show you They spoke out of prejudice and ritualism They themselves were lost angels fold their wings And they fold their wings And weep along with us watching you shun Christ's sacrifice Shunning sacrifice And they fold their wings And weep along with us watching you shun Shun
My cfa manager just told me to look this up cause he saw me listening to slayer. In his assumption I do listen to metal and he gave me a list of songs/bands and this was one of them. Damn man, you got taste
Of all the CD's I ever bought, this is my favorite. Saw many a good show in the late 90's. Thanks Dave H. For introducing me to Zao and the scene. Best show was the one on GCC campus.
+Blakklistedd seems like an odd comparison. I would say Skeletonwitch's vocals kind of resemble Carcass. They (Skeletonwitch) are a relatively newer band, generally you compare newer artists to their forbears, not the other way around. Peace.
+Blakklistedd You commented on this video 2+ years after it was posted, so why cant he respond 6 months later? In case you haven't noticed, youtube videos are timeless unless stripped down, so chill. He's right BTW.

goddamn this song is so awesome. I dont care if they are a Christian band because it sounds badass

Best show was the one on GCC campus.
it has been so many years since i heard this song. so glad to find it again damnnn
His vocals sound so modern.. wow
Old school ZAO was revolutionary and Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest is regarded by many to be their magnum opus.
They helped pioneer the modern sound you're talking about.
Kinda sorta reminds me of this is what the edge of your seat was made for.
It's actually vocalist from carcass we can thank for originating these type of vocals
carcass started in the 80s foo
I love the intro from "The Prophecy" -- underrated movie.
I'd love someone to add this sound to the movie's intro!
This was my introduction to them. Im thankful for it.
Thats the real "metal" hardcore with bands like day of suffering, strongarm , ascension, morning again, torn apart...

Strongarm yes sir, and stretch arm strong, shai hulud
Don't forget ADAMANTIUM
Day of Suffering were awesome. But the Almighty Strongarm were tops!!!
Morning Again, and Overcome, and of course Training For Utopia
this album is amazing.
Had me at the intro, amazing rhythm guitar. Feels like I just got a caffeine rush.
1:55-2:45 brutal breakdown OMG!!!
This song is fucking amazing.
20 years? Wow! I'm sure that Zao is glad to have a fan as dedicated as you.
that prophecy intro is greatness

Hmm. I've heard of these guys before, but this is my first time I've listened to them. Their vocals are very much Skeletonwitch-esque. I'm digging it.
+Blakklistedd seems like an odd comparison. I would say Skeletonwitch's vocals kind of resemble Carcass. They (Skeletonwitch) are a relatively newer band, generally you compare newer artists to their forbears, not the other way around. Peace.
...And you felt compelled to dig up an eight-month old comment to expound on your infinite wisdom...Why?
