  • Teatro Verdi has stood in Via Ghibellina for 166 years, 166 years which have seen the giants of opera, drama and comedy walk the planks of its palcoscenico. A beautiful old building in the classic, nineteenth-century style, it serves as the headquarters of the Orchestra della Toscana and the venue for some of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino’s productions.
Teatro Verdi was born in 1854 as Teatro Pagliano, named after the baritone-turned-pharmacist Girolamo Pagliano who had identified the site, a recently-defunct prison, as the ideal spot for a theatre. In 1901 it was rechristened as Teatro Verdi, after the composer whose notes were the first to ring through its auditorium.
