Is the Moza R9 the wheel to depose the Fanatec CSL DD as the default choice for those seeking a budget friendly direct drive sim racing wheel? The specifications are certainly impressive, and there’s lots to like about this wheelbase and the fancy light up Moza GS wheel rim.

Just a quick update. Moza have reached out to let me know that they'll take my feedback onboard (which is nice to see!). And, there is a 'damping kit' included with the GS wheel, which will reduce the sound of the shifters if you want. It was included in my review version, but I guess I missed it. It's a nice touch!
Further to the above, yesterday evening I received a software update which addresses the calibration of the paddles on the GS wheel. I've not had a chance to test it yet, but I'll update this comment when I've had a chance to set the wheel back up.
This is promising stuff to see Moza actually reach out to experience simracing content creators to point out flaws that they can work on and fix on upcoming products or even stuff they can fix with a simple update
Did you test it yet?
Now that Moza have released their budget friendly CS wheel I hope this company continues to grow and gain popularity. The CS wheel is meant to be really good for the money.
Me too. More competition is good. More choice is good. And, different ideas are healthy for our (let's be honest) fairly niche passtime.
@@ChrisHaye I agree, though it's becoming less and less a niche thankfully. Which also means bigger market and chances for companies like Moza and perhaps others in the future. Lets hope it stay's on this course :)
@@halfbreed02 but if your spending over five hundred dollars on my opinion you should be on pc anyway
Unlike Fanatec, which needs at least a $200* Quick release with electronics in it to work, you can use any $30 ebay wheel with a standard NRG style quick release on the moza R9. So it's not locking you into exclusively using their ecosystem of wheels.
Definitely. I think those 'clone' QRs have got a lot better over the years. I bought one when I first got my OSW system in 2017, and there was a lot of slop in the connection. But I've seen some recently that are much, much better. The downside of course is that you lose the wireless connection going that route, which isn't something that really bothers me. Though, it's less ideal for for those that use a lot of wheel rotation (rally, drift, tracks etc).
That’s what I’m saying. That really burned me out when I was in the Fanatec eco system for about 4 years. Now I have a SC2 pro with an HRS XeroPlay. I pay about $75 for a wheel side spigot.
True, but for the money you pay for the MOZA setup, I do not want to be limited to just one platform. Fanatec gives you access to PC(which is THE sim racing platform, of course)but also the current consoles, XSX and PS5 respectively, for the same price. That is all that is holding me back from MOZA.
I’ve been on 8nm on the standard QR and have had 0 issues. Sure it would be nice to have a better QD but I only have one wheel. So unless I run DCS and need the space my wheel stays on there and the QR is perfectly fine. I feel most people who complain about the QR system don’t even have one but complain about it anyways cause other people have. It’s not as big an issue as the internet pretends it to be
THIS. Fanatec is all about locking you into their sub par, plug and play mid tier equipment. If you can do DD and want more from your money, there are much better options nowadays. Talk about falling asleep at the wheel.
I really like mine, feels so premium compared to my old stuff. I cant compare it to a csl dd but the r9 feel as good as you would hope it does. The GS wheel looks beautiful and feels it too, they are both great and i have zero regrets. great review sums it up well!
Thanks Baz. Glad you like your setup, and as you say, it's a big step up from any of the belt driven wheels most of us start with.
@@ChrisHaye Just a shameless plug 😁 but like our alternative Fanatec f1 grips, Pineapple Grips now has the same 18 material offerings for the Moza GS wheel for those that want an alternative to black Alcantara.
We offer a re-covering service on your existing grips or we sell a new 3D printed versions that fit the Moza GS wheel.
Warning!
Within 4 months of light use my FANATEC McLaren wheel cracked at the shifter pivot point and where it mounted to the QR. I was accused of over tightening although I used a torque wrench set at 3nm.
After many emails FANATEC then replaced the wheel chassis before admitting in writing it was a weakness in the wheel.
Very soon after my CSL load cell pedal completely failed. I sent a video before sending them back as requested.
After sending a follow up email FANATEC said they can not fault the pedals asking if I want then sent back.
Eventually they were returned however within minutes I experienced the same issue.
Following the usual delayed response FANATEC then offered a replacement only if a show proof that the faulty load cell was again on its way back to them.
Prior to this delayed offer a local electric technician overheard my experience and offered assistance.
I was able to demonstrate the issue and within minutes the technician diagnosed a defective voltage regulator attached to the load cell circuit board.
No thanks to FANATEC I am now enjoying my sim racing again while I hold my breath for the next FANATEC failure.
Regardless of the failures experienced I would not have written this if only FANATEC replied within a fair time frame.
Please look at the FANATEC’s own forum in regards to all the issues and the terrible customer service many are experiencing.

Im glad Moza got you onboard. They've been super good to me and Im so excited for the future for them.
Figured you'd show up sooner or later, Corey. The sim racing world is getting bigger each day, but it's still a pretty tightly-knit community.
Chris, I just want to say that I really like your voice and the way you present yourself on this video. You’re one step ahead of other sim racing channels because you are very talented as a presenter as well. I’ve been following you for years and you obviously developed a lot. Congrats for the content and keep putting yourself out there. Well done. Take care of yourself.
Turn on the Hands Off Protection setting to stop the oscillations when you go hands off the wheel.
Love the look of that Moza R9.
Barry at SRG did a very in depth look at the interior.
The electronic components and soldering look to have been very well done.
I ordered mine with the CS rim. It should arrive within the next few days.
Can't wait.
More options are always a win in my book
Only reason I didn’t go Moza was because it’s more expensive and boosted media said it’s not as “clean” as the CSL DD.. But close.
Solid video man. The editing is wonderful.
Top quality video as always Chris!
Another silky smooth and Informative video.
Thanks Michael. Much appreciated!
I'm really pleased to see that this impressed you, Chris. I was sent a Moza R16 a while ago with the RS Wheel, but haven't had chance to use them yet - not got a rig strong enough...
I hope that once I get them up and running I have a similar, pleasant experience. I must say as well, good lord the forged carbon is beautiful.
Yeah, looks very sharp. I like the slightly more restrained graphic elements as well, but that’s very much a personal taste thing. GL with the R16 dude.
This what's wrong with these companies also. Sending out review units to CZcams channels that don't even set the equipment up let alone have strong enough rigs to run the equipment
@@SIMRIG412 The base itself didn't come from Moza, it came from a retailer that I'm partnered up with. It was a prototype unit that was no longer being used, and it wasn't for review purposes.

cool please give us ur thoughts on it... i'm on the fence
Awesome review! I've been looking at this exact combination for a while now, upgrading from a Logitech G29 which I've had and enjoyed for many years, but now it's time for something better. I'll have to wait a couple of months still because of an expensive honeymoon, but your review has convinced me that it will be worth the wait.
Looking slim Chris! Thanks for the review. Looking at getting out of the G29, need all the information to make a good decision.
Any alternative to Fanatec is great thing.
Will be interesting to see in 1-2 years how they will both fare (CSL DD and R9) in terms of reliability and RMAs

Yer looking good, Chris! Great review on this interesting wheel... thanks for taking the time to dive into it!
Thanks dude.!
It's a beautiful wheel. Just missing an lcd display. Really glad Pineapple grips having grips for it now.
i love the fact we can get the GS wheel also with perforated leather grips now.
Great review, thanks very much for it.
Thanks for the vid!
Whilst I am sure many people will be happy with the Moza and there are many great features, the problem for me is the way the warranty is managed. The hoops a customer has to jump through seem designed to discourage returns and repairs and the terms and conditions for the UK are actually illegal, not meeting the requirements of UK and EU consumer law. For me, this is a deal breaker.
Concerning the 'jumping' analogue paddles - they can't be fixed in firmware without reducing steering rotation granularity. It will require a hardware update to increase the data rate from the wheel. The current transmitter/receiver combination use RS correction for transmission errors but the chosen RX/TX radio serial comms pairing is not designed to cope with the level of error correction required at higher data transmission speeds. This really was a bad design choice and indicative of a lack of experience on the part of the manufacturer. As was the use of only one RX/TX channel which multiplexes all the data. Expect the steering to stutter when using several controls at the same time.
The pogo pins used for power transfer are a mixed blessing. Pogo pins are designed for use in electronics which are not changed often. They have a duty cycle of 300 insertions, although generally real world usage is three times that number. Pogo pins suffer from spring sag and both external and internal contact wear. They are also very prone to internal contamination and corrosion - they really should never be exposed to typical household contaminants such as dust, smoke, and dirt. There are many videos on the pros and cons of pogo pins in electronic projects - take a look. If you swap your wheel on a regular basis, the pogo pins may not last more than a year. The Fanatec has a common duty cycle of 3500 to 5000 insertions on the *female* (base) side and 8000/15000 insertions on the *male* (wheel) side. I note they don't mention this in the documentation; naughty Fanatec. However, once again you can expect about three times that in the real world.
Just thought I'd leave my experience as a Moza owner from the UK.
I received a faulty Moza RS wheel from Abruzzi UK. I contacted Abruzzi and their support team forwarded me to Moza, who were very quick to identify and attempt fixing my issue.
It only took about 24 hours from the moment I contacted Moza to the moment they approved for Abruzzi to ship me a replacement wheel, so I'm very pleased with Moza's customer support 👍
Edit - Also I have not experienced any of the stuttering you mentioned, but yes the clutch paddles are unfortunately jumpy. I also know people who have owned Simagic wheels with pogo pins for 2+ years and they still work perfectly with no signs of wear or corrosion.
Thanks for the detailed technical feedback Bertram. I did wonder if the paddle issue was related to whatever com protocol was in use, but that sort of thing is well beyond my experience / knowledge, so didn't care to speculate. The point you raise about multiple controls is an interesting one, and something I'll test when I get the wheelbase back on the rig. For most racers, I guess it's unlikely to be an issue, but if you're using those paddles as anything other than a clutch (hand controls for example), that could cause some major problems.
It's funny you mention the Pogo pins as well, as I did write about concerns of the springs losing their effectiveness under compression, but couldn't find anything to back that up, so removed it from the final script. In any case, thank you for the detailed response - it's always nice (and rare) to come away from a CZcams comment having learned things!
Well said. About warranty, it's better to buy from retailer in EU because then he is responsible for your claims if something will go wrong. Also shiping costs ... It showed me 150$ w/o tax straight from monza site. I decided to go with fanatec this time.
I'm still using my fanatec csr wheel from 2014!
About Moza R9.. I saw and tested this few days ago in one of Indonesian's Technology festival, the Indocomtech 2022 at JCC Senayan, Jakarta. The FFB's when testing the car is really a good one and could equal Fanatec's (which I do tested in other place, although I am Thrustmaster T300RS user big time.). This steering wheel set could be a good entry for Simracers in future as I think that the FFB's are really helpful and could drive well even though just testing it on one sim and with limited powers out there.
Bang di indo udh ada yg jual moza r9 blom ya
Looks very nice !
I can't believe you took out the cap just because somebody commented about it negatively. Hairs are fine too, btw. :D
Re creaking while twisting; an engineer friend of mine told me that no matter how carefully you design something for a particular use case, some end user will invariably try something outside the use case and complain that it doesn't perform....
Today the Moza r9 arrived in black, and what I don't like is the rear power button, I have the base behind the central monitor and from the videos I saw, I assumed it was a switch, and No, it's a button, which Yes or Yes you have to give it to start, so the first day and I need a mod, I will install a solenoid behind it with a button in front of the hand and another larger button, near the clutch pedal and parallel to the first button, that way it already makes me the function of emergency stop and shutdown...
Good video, with the usual quality, thanks and regards.
Great video, I definitely want one but can’t wait to hear your feedback on the Logitech G Pro DD. Comparatively it’s hideous on the eye, but it’s console compatible and has 11nm. I’m really looking forward to Moza being PS compatible - I must admit I love the fact you can actually get one in New Zealand too! Fanatec always seem to be out of stock and they only supply Australia making life tough for we kiwis.
Love your work Chris
Can u do a review on the simagic alpha mini next and compare the 3 bases maybe?
Great video Chris, you metioned people stocking this rather than relying on manufacturers mail only option. Who actually stocks Moza equipment?
Basically the Chinese company that manufactured the Fanatec CSL model is able to use the same exact shell because China doesn’t have the same copyright laws.
Great disclaimer. Always makes me trust what I'm watching, similar to Mr. Mobile's disclaimers
Hello Chris, I have a question, do you need to launch the game through the Moza app/software? Or can you launch the game through steam and have the wheel be recognised by the game? Is the app/software a necessary middleman ?
Great vid. Honestly don’t care for any of the moza stuff but competition will push fanatec to innovate.
Yeah, absolutely! It's a shame it's not compatible with consoles really, as I think that would have been an even bigger push for the competition.
You'd fucking hope so, maybe they can innovate some basic customer service and quality control.
Thankyou for this great review, Chris - cos as you state, you can't complain about "more choice" for the Sim Racing crowd as a whole..... On a side note, could you (or anyone also reading this), please tell me what car & sim you have showing in the B-Roll from the 15:15 mark?. It's is the only car (& sim) I don't immediately recognize???
Hey dude, hope all is well! It's the RSS Formula 4 car in AC, at Chang International Circuit.
Thankyou very much, Chris. Sounds like another great RSS Mod Car I need to add to my Collection 👍🤔👍
Love these "this company send me free expensive equipment but that does not influence my opinion" disclaimers
Great review defiantly looking at this instead of the Fanatec, looks like Moza really want to push forwards and be engaged with their customer base. For me that's the decider when there is so little to choose between the hardware.
I wouldn't buy man had minenbreak on me in a week. Idk I kinda hate moza now.
@@Bobbarker23455 I mean any manufacturer will have the same story? Hope you get a fix soon bro, best wishes.
That rim alone is plenty tempting over Fanatecs offerings. Don't get me wrong, Fana rims are quality products but.. Eh.. Maybe I'm just wishing for more styled and interesting choices on my DD2.
Honestly tempted to pick a moza up when I move to America.
A sensitive Gerbil! - surely the only time this has been uttered in a YT video hahaha
how do you like this compared to your Fanatec Podium F1 Blue wheel that you reviewed about a year ago? are they on the same level? recommend one over the other?
Once I have enough money ima get this as my first wheel.
Looks like a good product. The company seems like they’ll be good with updates & customer service too. 🤔 now I just need to rob a bank 🏦 😅. Good video sir.
I could listen to your voice all day Chris, surly someone’s approached you for some voice over work. Another great video
i a Chinese, Moza has done a good job and I am proud of it, but I still choose to buy Simucube. Don't ask me why.😁😂
In the video it looks like there's a little bit of lag between the wheel position and the in-game wheel position
can i use my tlcm pedals and sparco ebrake and shifter of thrustmaster with moza they all in usb right ???
Hey Chris, a small error around 4:20, you say iRacing but the CC says RaceRoom. Otherwise great video!
Weird! I did test it in Raceroom after I had compiled the first draft of the script, as both times I tried beforehand the server was down for maintenance! I must have messed things up on the second draft 🤣
I've been looking to get a csl dd but they are never in stock. Would you recommend this as an alternative?
Thanks for the great info but until it plays on PS/X-Box it's not going to get the sales numbers, I wonder what the Fanatec percentage sold goes to consoles?
im thinking of getting an r5 bundle and sell the pedals and wheel... i have tlcm and think that thats good enough. i want a formula wheel and want to get a custom one with a quick connect on ebay. any advice? should i do that?
Hello i have a question the MOZA controler is for all consoles xbox and pkaystation? Thank you
I don't think my PC has bluetooth so I'm guessing that's going to be a problem for the wheel. Would a bluetooth adaptor cause lag issues between the wheel and the PC? Or do you mean that the Bluetooth is between the base and the wheel?
no mention of pedal connections, are Fanatec pedals compatible?
Id love to find an easy way to get one here in Canada without paying an arm and a leg. I need at least 2 hands to use hand controls at the very least! 🤣
Its super fairly priced but the shipping and unknown custom charge is what scares me away from clicking the damn buy button :( I was hoping TMs DD would've been out already and priced around the same but available at electronic retailers like bestbuy locally.
Would be interesting if you revisited this product a year from now to see whether they've taken your feedback seriously :)
PC only is a big negative for me. I’d buy the csl DD for that alone
If you are serious about simracing you really should be on pc

Woah what was that "Coffee Racer" sim set up??
Hi chris, I doubt why you didn’t get MOZA R5 for review? Did you point out something they don’t like here?
This is too much of a comparison than a review. It's less a "Should you buy" and more of a "Which should you buy". I passed on it when shipping was $225. Killing the comparison to the Fanatec kit for me. But I like what you point out like the oscillation.
Great system… but so I have some Fanatec wheels, I would go for a eco system supporting it… and the price point is not that outstanding….and having some great supporting and helping support from Fanatec, I would ever stick to them!😃✌🏻
Absolutely. It would definitely be a sidegrade to a CSL DD in any case in my opinion.
I’m debating the upgrade from a csw 2.5 . Idk if it’s worth sticking with fanatec anymore.
@Serro I wonder if it’s even worth the upgrade in general though.
"non trivial domestic issues". haaaaa your so elegant my friend.
Hi Chris,
Any chance you can have a word to Granite Devixes re: true drive update suggestions 😊 moza have implemented some tasty software options. Maybe you could start a thread on the forums there. The equaliser in particular seems promising for the future.
@@designamk1160 thanks yes I know that.
I don't see any raceroom here. Can you confirm whether the wheelbase works with that game?
Woo Hoo- Fanatec need a check anyways, they could be priced better and they are dragging there heals compared to other competitors and there QR2 Release?????
But Fanatec do make good products
Yeah, the QR2 thing is confusing tbh. I've been seeing them at events for about 12 months now. Not sure what's happened there... will chase up with them to see what the deal is.
@@ChrisHaye Here is my opinion on the QR2 debacle. As we all know, a number of high-screech ten-thumbed users have been bending the pins on the current QR system. The QR2 is designed to fix wobble for those not willing to read fitting instructions but do not change the pinning, so the main issue of clumsy-attachment by the *wet-ware* would not be solved.
It is just a theory, but the only theory which explains why the QR2 was not released years ago.
Maybe one day if they further refine & offer console compatibility
It seems like it will be great however they are not being honest on their site about handling times, I ordered a month ago and they still haven’t shipped yet their website still says 3-5 business days handling time.
Do you think the wheel is to big for Formular class?
If this base had console support it would sell way more
i honestly am pissed off i haven't heard of them until the day after i ordered my Fanatec CSL DD. plus i love this wheels quick release, since it is essentially a NRG quick release meaning if i wanted to, i could take my E30 wheel out of the car, upstairs, and straight to I racing
what's your sim rig?
In a word no. If they get console support it might be a different story but if not they'll never compete with Fanatec.
If it doesn’t have console compatibility it’s no good for me I want to use my wheel on pc and console so it’s Fanatec all the way for me
It's a shame Fanatec have the monopoly for Direct drive wheels that can work on PS and PC.
Yeah, for sure. The licensing stuff from Sony and Microsoft* is complex, bureaucratic and expensive from what I understand. So it's tough for startups and smaller manufacturers to get their foot into the door with console peripherals.
*One is notably worse than the other ;)
@@ChrisHaye nevertheless the quality of the video is top notch as always Chris 👍 good work!
Haven't actually watched past the intro but it's weird to see Moza in two of my niches (camera gear and sim racing gear) considering they're barely related. Not complaining though!
As a video guy... same!
What's the sim at 5:40?
^ I would also like to know :)
It’s a shame Fanatec didn’t release the QR2 before releasing new wheel bases. I know the Moza QR is the same as all the other Chinese dds but it’s a proven product. In my pea brain the Fanatec hardware looses to any product that uses a proper QR on a dd.
The only thing for me is the colour of the base. White and blue is not my favorite combo and would stick out in my all black, dark grey setup. I know it has nothing to do with performance but you also want a nice looking setup.
Yeah, they offered me the choice between white and black, and I went with white, since nobody else I'd seen had reviewed the white one. Personally, I'd go with black, the finishing looks better from what I've seen and then there's the general aesthetics.
White and blue is too classy for you
@@theonlylolking Design is all about taste. I have white things in my home but always with either grey/black contrast or deep colours. Dark blue and white are OK but not light blue. But cool to hear that there is also a black. Keep on racing dude and have a great day

@@voongnz yea, there were only 50. I'm surprised the sent one to a CZcamsr for free and people who bought them back in May are still waiting for them to ship as they were sold as "in stock" and they weren't even produced yet. I've been waiting over a month for mine.
Hey chris, are you planing to do some mod reviews for ac again? I would love to hear your opinion about the URD's LMH and VRC's formula alpha
we can see the lag on screen. is it because of the camera?
Sensitive gerbil.. Yeah i have similar problem: Someone in the bedroom upstairs complaining that all she can hear is click click click all night
It sounds very interesting, although I've just looked it up and due to me living in Germany, the shipping costs make it approximately 100 Euros more expensive than the CSL DD (Base+Pedals).
So I'm not sure if this will really be a budget alternative for us Europeans unfortunately
Are these PlayStation compatible? I don’t think so. I see a lot of fanatec users playing gt7.
Moza no
Is the Moza ecosystem currently only PC compatible or is it capable of working on PS4/PS5?
PC only
No mention of Moza Pedals. Do they even make them?
They do, but I've not seen any in the wild!
Moza...PLEASE make a Ferrari RED paint base!
You know whats beats all these wheels a cheaper more appricheble wheel that actually sells more despite it being of lower quality and maybe even class welcome to the logitec g29
They charge $60 for a table clamp. I'm not really sure how they're killing Fanatec when their accessories are wildly priced for an "entry level" wheel base. The wheelbase price seems like they're taking a loss on and making it up by charging more for accessories.
I have torn two down. One was a review model used at a show and the other was a boxed release model. Inside they are very different - the boxed model components are 'meh' level. This is of course only a sample of two, but I feel a bait-and-switch is in progress.
Kıral fanatec direksiyon uyarmı
If this was console compatible it would be an obvious choice.
I just don’t see how this compares to the Entire Fanatec Ecosystem? Pedals Basic to expensive, Shifter, Handbrake, and Wheels Galore… maybe in 2-3 years, If Moza even want to develop an Actual Ecosystem? Fair enough when it comes to software, that’s not my expertise! But as far as Hardware, I don’t see why you want a Wheel and base made by one company, and Everything else made by a different company? Ehh I have OCD, and seeing all the Mix Match would make me Insane!! Good info, but I’m Sticking with my CSL DD, and Fanatec Support Products!
As a user of the GS wheel, I honestly believe that the shifter sound is quite annoying, if I’m playing a GT car, meh. BUT, F1 will make my whole family rage, specially since I play at the living room
wish they'd make them for Xbox series x
Yea not sure why they don't option that... Would be a great benefit all around
