Same here, being retired only on SSA and luckly get a little SNAP/EBT which helps. I found a a decent mobile home/rv park that is out in the farm country and give a really nice senior discount on rent. There is safety in a community, plus the essentials, electricity, water, etc. My advice to anyone on a tight budget, check around in the small communities and cities, I am 100 mi's from a really big city, 60 miles from a midsized and nearest Walmarts. But the lot rent is cheap, I am in a safe place, and have all I need to get by.

Would love to know where - I know there are lots of reasonably priced places - I am saving up to do the same thing - also have a home equity line of credit if a smoking deal comes along. I like in Scottsdale, Arizona where the prices have exploded. My mom lives in Alabama - I might look there next time I visit her. BTW, folks. Hi Bob its possible to be a nomad and have a good life. When I started my SS was almost 900.00 a month and I had more money left over than when I lived in sticks and bricks.
My husband died and my SS went up to 2,000.00 a month which gave me so much more. I was able to save for unexpected problems and travel more. But when I got less I still lived well the most important thing was that I was happy and had peace of mind that's worth everything.

Couple of things here: Being a minimalist is great, the less $hit you have the less burdensome your life becomes. Less worries means more quality time! Having your house on wheels means you can change the scenery, OR get the hell out of dodge if something bad is coming. (Think Hurricane Ian last October. Can't wreck what ain't there!) Follow the Sun and never deal with snow! YUK!! All you need is some basic mechanical know how, don't skimp on maintenance and drive safe. Sounds like this is in my plans in 5 years or less. Thanks for a great vid and good for you Tom for showing bravery and a fearless life.

Hello. Great videos. In 2011 after losing my job I burned through my retirement savings and took my Social Security at 62. I learned the minimalist lifestyle, and now can live fairly well on my check. You don't go to restaurants, bars or travel, or purchase anything you don't really need. I own my little home, and plan to sell it before I leave. Now at age 67 I'm saving for a minimalist lifestyle as an RV nomad. It can be done. I'm looking to get my pickup roadworthy, and get a good used RV.

Makes van life much easier to get two checks each every month. Plan ahead I tell youngsters I meet who want to take to the road. Get a government job of some sort with a defined benefit pension plan and stick at it for twenty years. Great retirement.

Yep. All paid off. Completely debt free. We lived on half my husband's income until our 30 year mortgage was paid off in 16 years. He only had to get super careful about his spending for two years. I pushed my husband into rapid pay off because he had a health scare that didn't get resolved by doctors. The mystery resolved itself. I wanted him to be ready financially to take early retirement if it flared up again. We can live off his pension. Marty, my husband is at the RTR 2023 right now. His first RTR. Our son (age 22) will be the designated housesitter when we both go on the road together. We are also doing major decluttering so our son can take over the house when he gets married. We haven't applied for Social Security, yet.

Lay it down right over the carpet and it is BETTER than hard flooring as you keep the insulation and well as sound deadening. Zero remodeling, and far better functionality imo. This all sounds like a plan. I'm turning 62 this year, lost my job in 2019. Then the pandemic happened, I'm going to collect this year at 62 as well. I do own my home outright but there are utilities and property taxes. I'm healthy so I'll probably work through retirement, part time no corporate work for me anymore, lol. Who knows my mid 60s to early 70s might find me out on the road in one of your videos, wink. Thanks for sharing all this information about "Cheap RV Living"

Thanks for making this video !! I'm getting ready to retire and will be trying to do the same thing as this fellow. I was really worried if I would be able to make it on my Social security check but your videos have convinced me that I can do it!! I already have my rig setup for boondocking and have used it to boondock many times already. I love the western mountains and deserts and have wanted to travel them most all of my adult life. I plan to sell my house which will give me a nice safety net so I be a nomad until I become physically unable to do it. I've tried campgrounds but they are way too expensive and I don't like being crowded.

    • @AhJodie
      @AhJodie Před rokem +2

Yes, I don't like campgrounds closeness either, except a family space, which is usually far from others, but, more expensive!

I got 7 years and i am thinking of moving to Mexico. Food is so much cheaper there and rent also. Merida Mexico seems like a place i want to be. Temperature is more my liking as don't like the cold.

Bob! It's me again about the 1997 Catalina RV. Well, I told them to deliver it to me. We will see if it happens! I am an at home Nomad, 76 years old female. My husbands passed on long ago. I want to visit Florida, but if this dream is real I will stop by Quartzsite on my way, maybe to find other vans going that way!

I'm a cancer survivor starting over at 61 at the moment I'm on my friends property any 24 ft Fleetwood Prowler ultralite which would require being pulled around I got it for dirt cheap because the front part the roof it been damaged from a branch I made the repairs gutted the front and have it almost completed very lovable 297 as well and extremely good shape. During covid lockdown and when I had cancer I had an issue with my vehicle insurance somehow made from being sick or whatever got neglected and it got canceled and then might a got canceled and somehow during the lockdown here in Pennsylvania when they suspended the registration because of no insurance somewhere along the line that became a suspended license they don't want to admit the mistake so now it takes an attorney. At the moment I am completely stuck as far as travel goes but I am working on it and I am going to get up out of here I'm going to utilize all the grade appliances amenities inside this camper in something else that I can drive that's gutted and I can make it my own. I hope to be on the road by the end of this year at the latest

It's Jan 2023. People in huge numbers are moving towards living in RVs & RV Parks in tiny homes. The sad reality of an imploding economy.
Hopefully the silver lining is it's not so bad & a sense of freedom.

As Tom notes “this is the life for me”, for many of us fretting about money in retirement is ongoing.
The bigger concern is the reality of running out of time while still in good health.
Thanks again Bob…. Tom’s story is very inspiring and full of a good dose of hope!

Check out used building supply/thrift type stores… we have the Habitat for Humanity re-stores here. You can often score inexpensive things there. It’s where I found a larger sink, and two living room chairs for our rig. Ripping out the uncomfy sofa and dinette was just the right thing to do for our lifestyle as well. Often you can find a few boxes of new flooring materials from someone’s project where they overbought and couldn’t return the excess etc. Oh, and save the old table top because it usually matches the counters and can be attached to an inexpensive microwave cart for more counter space or a kitchen island.
