The moment the fog appeared and people started dying breathing, I already knew the movie was going to end with some generic bullshit like the daughter realizing she can breathe the fumes or something like that.

Only explanation I can make out of this is that the girls condition is a mutation.though they may breath human air the allergens in it makes them sick while the gas neautralizes those allergens somehow their mutation found a way to filter out the toxin maybe or they are just compatible with it.
