Lane Hogging in UK Motorways

  • Car drivers have no right to complain about other roads users given the prevelance of hogging the overtaking lanes on UK Motorways. In fact, it's no longer drivers hogging the middle lane. For the last two years we've seen a huge growth in the number of vehicles hogging the outside overtaking lane..otherwise known as the fast lane. It doesn't take a genius to understand the danger. In my opinion there is no worse driving than lane hogging - it is the root of all other bad or illegal driving, even causing good drivers to have to perform poor driving practices

Trouble is you could speak to these drivers and they'd have no idea what they're doing is wrong...... I remember being in a car with a woman on an empty motorway, as we joined she went straight into lane 3... I asked why as lanes 1 & 2 were empty .... She said she was in the fast lane and she wanted to drive fast.

Yes this is unfortunately a widespread misconception.. There is no fast lane but these people believe that's what they are.

Once when driving on the M40 overtaking most cars there was a biker in front whizzing from left to right waving lane hoggers from right and middle lane to keep left. To this day he is my hero!

Same practice in Ireland, either a combination of cluelessness, carelessness or self righteous jealousy of faster drivers and they are going to act as self appointed policemen and block other drivers on the road and bring everyone else down to their level of incompetence and lack of skill. Unless the cars on your left are going slower than you then you should move into the left lane. Undertaking is illegal in Ireland but happens all the time because of slow people in the outer lane. Other jurisdictions prosecute slow drivers in outer lanes but this is rare in Ireland.

So it’s OK for you to drive in the middle lane while the inside lane is empty, and undertake several vehicles at speed, but you complain about lane hogging?

I wish everybody would lane hog. No lane changing. I would get from a to b much quicker

Mike Hunter No it would not, try driving in the USA. Keep left unless overtaking is the rule and best way.

I prefer the Rules in the states, you can stay in any lane, overtake in any lane, why can’t we have that here.I have been undertaken on our motorways and it doesn’t bother me in the least.this happens when two motorways merge anyway.on our four lane motorways it makes good sense to undertake.I know a lot of people will disagree with me but I believe it would be less stressful.

They are not the rules in most states. Very similar to here. only keep right rather than left.

If you've been undertaken then you are doing something wrong, think about it!

Who the hell do you think you are demanding others move over for you?

This is what you should do when the left lane is empty. People here act as self righteous blockers knowing fully that undertaking is illegal so that no one can get by them. Classic dog in the manger tactics. It is good road manners to watch your mirrors regularly and move over for faster drivers, some people get jealous of faster drivers and want to block them in pure spite.

John Dooley like i said. England drivers just dont have the discipline!!! And youre 110% correct. Drivers in england think that they are self righteous. Doing that wont get anywhere!

John Dooley, undertaking isnt illegal in the slightest. Its frowned upon because we are generally told to pass on the right and not on the left.
