How to backup PS2 memory card saves quickly!

- Have you ever wished there was a way to get your PS2 saves off of your old memory cards to have a backup in the event it fails, or maybe to import them into an emulator like PCSX2 but you haven't found a way? Wish no more - there is a pretty easy way! I created this video because the tutorials I've seen, while very informative, go very deep into many different aspects - and I wanted one that was quick and to the point. **Note - this works on every PS2 - original and slim - except for a specific slim PS2 with model "9xxxx" (the slim one where 1/2 of the top is glossy).
Enjoy, and please let me know in the comments below if this was helpful and if you'd like to see more videos like this in the future!
*Required*
- PS2 Memory card pre-loaded with Free McBoot 1.996 (a quick google search will help you find this for under $15)
- A USB-A flash drive (or other USB storage medium you'd like to copy the saves to)
*Optional if you're importing saves to play them on a PC or Mac*
- PCSX2 (Windows, Mac and Linux versions available) - pcsx2.net
*Additional Resources*
- Forums with a wealth of Free McBoot information (also useful if you want to save $12 and create your own Free McBoot card) - www.psx-place.com/forums/free...

This is good to know. PS2 was the last console I ever sunk any real time into. Gonna put a McBoot on my to do list
Well worth the low cost!
Great tutorial! I do this constantly. I move them back to my memcard if i played a game on an emulator. It works great
Appreciate it! Do you want to see more tutorials like this?
@@zophar1 sure! That'd be great
3:04 i am using this because i have a single mc which is 8mb and i need to delete save files to play new games, and i dont wanna lose them XD
An excellent reason indeed!
after messing around i figured out that to load the saves back onto a memory card you just need to copy them off the usb and do the same psupaste option back onto your memory card, that option will reconvert them back to their original format, might be worth mentioning in the video!
Thanks, good info for a future video!
Nice! Great tutorial.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the great tutorial!
Glad it helped!
God bless your save date , many years ago I lost my ps1 and ps2 save date, cause I didn’t back up them. If I saw this video before I lost the save date , you can save my hole life, lol😂😢
Damn. Wish the help had come in time!
if i were to put a ps1 memory card into my ps2, could i use the same method to get the backups? or is there a different method?
Hey, do you know if there are any PS2 elfs to make backup images/restore to card but for PS1 memory cards?
Not sure off the top of my head, try asking the community on the discord?
Hey man. Do you know where can i find a freemcboot memory card with ulaunchelf already installed on it?
I bought my card for $15 on amazon and I thought it had ulaunchelf on it... did yours not?
How do I make a folder on the usb flash drive
They're called "directories" in a PS2 file system environment, like the old DOS structure. When you press R1 to bring up the menu, choose "New Dir" and that's how you make what we now call "folders".
What file system should I format my flashdrive as?
FAT32

I am indeed the founder.
@@zophar1 Wow, this is so crazy.
You´re site is basically the beginning of my PC experience. Emulation was the first thing i discovered when i first used my PC. Your site was a great help at that time.
I was going to ask that exact question. Cool to know the answer! Guess I follow Zophar's domain since early 2000s.
i want to backup my game saves, i want to plug in the memory card to my pc and back it up, no ps2 required, is that possible?
There are ps2 mem card usb devices that you could use to do it on eBay for crazy prices - I’ve never used them myself. If you have a PS2, my method is much cheaper since it just needs free mcboot.
one of my ps2 memory cards just died, im taking it as a sign to set up a soft mod setup with freemcboot and an ssd and get my surviving saves backed up (luckily it wasn't the card with most of my completed saves on it, but i lost my 100% files for mortal kombat deadly alliance and deception 😔)
Argh, sorry to hear that. :(
@@zophar1 its all good, softmodding has been a breeze so far and its honestly been kind of fun to set up. quick question though if you happen to know, but how would i get these saves back on to my ps2 memory card? can i just copy/paste the psu files back onto my mem cards and load them that way or do i need some application on PC to convert them back to their original format?
@@gregoryberrycone yeah you should be able to copy them back the other direction as long as the format remains the same.
@@zophar1 this method also allows you to bypass the insane copy protection on mortal kombat deadly alliance/deception saves (the reason i couldn't back them up the old fashioned way by just copying them from one memory card to another directly on an unmodded console in the first place) which is a huge game changer! seriously thanks for the tutorial, you're providing an extremely valuable service for game preservation
I also needs to recover a ps3 hard drive my ps3 saves are all gone🤦🏾♂️😢??!!
Argh, sorry to hear. :(
Can u recover files u formatted accidentally back on the memory card???
You could try something like memcardrex - github.com/ShendoXT/memcardrex
@@zophar1 I have to download it
@@zophar1 I’m confused
@@MoodFrmDade23 yeah. It’s a pc program - I don’t know of any way to do it straight on the ps2.
@@zophar1 ight imma check that out appreciate
