How to Accelerate Fast for Hockey Players

  • Hockey players want to learn how to accelerate fast? Forget about swinging your arms harder or pushing with more force - this is about understanding the game of hockey and adjusting your movement strategy accordingly.
    If you've ever watched an NHL game or observed players around the rink, you've probably noticed that they rarely employ the traditional straight-line sprinting technique. Instead, they utilize a variety of transitional movements like gliding, corkscrews, cross-punch turns, and pivots. The classic, textbook sprint just doesn't happen.
    So, what's the secret to becoming a better accelerator on the ice? It's all about embracing these unique movements and incorporating them into your training. Our favorite technique for this purpose is the "crossunder" (some call it the crossover). Instead of relying on traditional strides, we encourage you to use crossovers to accelerate as soon as you touch the puck or need to gain open space.

    Can you make a video on handling the puck at high speeds… my skating has gone leaps past my puck handling ability its a really weird imbalance

    Carrying even the slightest amount of momentum and understanding how best to leverage that during initial acceleration is a major advantage. Thanks for the great content!

    Great video and great advice! Could you please make a follow up video on how to train acceleration out of various positions we may find ourselves in (in addition to the one you already showed in this video). Maybe from going backwards or from a Mohawk position, etc. Thanks again!

    Ive converted from a D to C this year to round out my game and your vids as a tool are invaluable as always! Any tips on working on finishing? I feell like i can get 95% of the play in. Just cant put the puck past goalie

      Lots of things but without looking at your video it sounds like a deception or puck placement problem.

    I inadvertently noticed this the other day in practice. Blasting into the O-zone with crossovers seemed faster and more efficient than just trying to sprint.

    Just discovering this channel and watching a few videos got me from consistently having no points a game to a few points per game. I feel just doing the proper stuff improved my hockey positioning and IQ on ice. Unfortunately my IQ off ice still non existent 😝

    I have a quick question. Just to see a comparison. I know 40 yard sprints don’t quite equate to skating speed because the different strides, but how fast on average are nhl players in comparison to nfl players 40 yard dash?

  • @albondar
    @albondar Před 8 měsíci

    True that the game is more often about efficient skating than very aggressive one. But it's important to also train crossover starts so that when you hockey stop, you can immediately get up to speed.

    • @pitbullgait
      @pitbullgait Před 8 měsíci

      always add the opposite reaction, to your flow states, whether that be crossunders to the left on your winger wall defensive zone....so you'd maybe do a punch step gliding flow to the right after you've a framed floated...just like jason demonstrated above...

    • @pitbullgait
      @pitbullgait Před 8 měsíci +1

      so if you training complete stops and start on the small area floating flow defensive zone...so complete crossover stop and go to the right, 1-3-or5 strides, A frame float corkscrew whatever, then maybe a 2 leg punch stop to left with crossovers instead of the 1 leg inside punch. Just figure it out what 2 opposite equal reaction turns or stops for a small area, will be compatible with whatever your flow route is going to be to the other end(i.e. heel heel quick twitch crossovers, heel heel medium twithc longer crossunders, or straight forward breakaway crossunders(i.e. straightforward quiet skating heel based off barely lifting leg crossunders)

    Like a dumbass, I always end up standing still when I know I'm not supposed to; it's so much harder to get going from a stop than if you're already moving. I see it in my kid's team, too, and they always get run by teams that have learned to basically never stand still.

    • @Train2point0
      @Train2point0  Před 8 měsíci

      For sure, it's something players can pick up with in game experience as hockey IQ continues to grow and they can better read the play.

  • @joeschmo2693
    @joeschmo2693 Před 4 měsíci

    Than why not just do a straight cross step forward start? Are you really going to take several seconds to circle around if play is moving directly away up ice?

    • @Train2point0
      @Train2point0  Před 3 měsíci

      No, then you would do a cross over start haha.

    • @joeschmo2693

      @@Train2point0 I get it - you're going to keep moving in most cases and not be starting from a stop. Good video.

  • @pitbullgait
    @pitbullgait Před 8 měsíci

    you could still train that stand start, someone getting a good knee bend how you were demonstrating, may be just 50 or 70 routes deep into an neutral zone regrouping style top speed practice. Something like blended in with neutral zone to 2/3 lenghths routes, with shots on net whatever. Itd probably help the only 5 or 7 straight strides they might take if theyre accumulating, air resistance exposure...remember, anything of a route, where they cover the 30metre lengths in crossovers, straightforward, there is air resistance which you could feel on your hockey stick, if thats continuous stick handling crossing under over, or continuous stick swinging with 2 hands while stragihtforward...dont worry about peeople saying 10 routes out of 70 or 80 means youre working straight forwards striding...or that a bent knee forward hunch is going to leak the guys out of the flow splay dynamics.

    You simply have to go berserk the whole time.
    Just leave out all your anger & you will become faster than Satan.
    That actually has nothing to do with skating technique.
    Your skating technique is like you walk.
    You learned it & now that is you.
