  • Wayne and Gilda paid a contractor close to $20,000 to renovate their kitchen. After gutting the kitchen, the contractor stalls for six months with numerous lame excuses. General contractor Mike Holmes steps in to mediate and gives the home owners a brand new kitchen in just one week. #HolmesonHomes #mikeholmes

    I think people are misunderstanding the husband's position when he flips out about the cabinet color. The cabinet color doesn't matter. This guy has been waiting on a kitchen for half a year and finally the cabinets come in... and there's a mistake. It's a blown up version of everyone else at the table getting their food before you, then when your food does come it's wrong. When you watch a 20 minute episode about it you just kind of roll your eyes that it's wrong. But this guy has been waiting for half a year for those cabinets and for a few minutes his emotions are in overdrive because if they got the color wrong, what else did they get wrong.
    And he's definitely right to feel that way because if Mike wasn't there to fix problems the whole kitchen wouldn't have worked because they had screwed up the design too.

    In a few other episodes one can tell that one or more of the owners isn't happy about something. However, this is the only episode I've seen where one of the owners was outright upset straight to Mike and the crew about something. Even in the final scene the husband looks pissed. Wonder if the couple stayed together? Or if the husband switched out the kitchen cabinets later on.

    • @TerryProthero
      @TerryProthero Před rokem +16

      I don't recall any other episodes where the homeowner seemed unhappy, but I think you are right about that guy. It sounds like the cabinets weren't exactly what they had originally ordered. But the wife was totally right. They look just fine. Let them install them. Mike was in a no win situation in that case. He did everything he could to straighten out the situation. But there were a lot of things working against him. It took weeks just to get the contractor to deliver on the cabinets. And that was after Mike came to his place in person to talk to him about it on camera. Which was absolutely the right move. Weasels like that will stonewall you and never return your calls. Confronting them in person is usually the better move.

    • @TerryProthero
      @TerryProthero Před rokem +6

      It's mentioned on some episodes. But there is a certain amount the homeowner needs to pay, and the rest is covered by the show. The specifics vary with the job and how much the homeowner can afford to cover. A good example would be the episode where a contractor was building a fence for 50 families in a neighborhood. He didn't finish the work, and any work he did do was improper. Some people had already paid him in part or in whole. So what Mike did was charge everyone what they agreed to pay the contractor minus whatever they had already paid him. And the show covered any remaining amount. Although, I suspect that they get some materials and labor donated. Which probably reduces their cost. I think on other jobs, he did something similar. A fair price for the job minus what they had already paid to the crooked or inept contractor. The people on this episode likely got their kitchen done free or super cheap. Which is likely why the wife told her husband to shut up about the cabinets not being the ones they wanted. They had been six months without a kitchen, and she didn't want to go another six months.

      Painting cabinets is the way to go so as long as they aren't old cabinets with boring doors. Although I suppose even in that instance you could replace the doors alone and give everything a facelift. Older cabinets are probably way stronger than the new cabinets with thinner wood and such.

  • @shqa574
    @shqa574 Před rokem +1

    Mike was able to recoup the homeowners' monetary loss by going directly to the contractor and demanding the cabinet stock that they had prepaid for. Otherwise, their payment would have been pissed in the wind.
    Since the cabinets are made to order, the contractor might have cut costs, and ordered the generic stock at the supplier. This indicates that he had some intention of installing the cabinets, but he had no money to pay his supplier. The homeowner was pissed that he did not get his color stain, but beggars cannot be choosers, at this point of no return.

      Possibly, but it's not a helpful thing to say under the circumstances. It puts Mike in the uncomfortable position of not being able to satisfy the guy no matter what he does. He spent weeks fighting with the contractor to get those cabinets. And now this guy has a fit on camera about them. A person with any class would have thanked Mike for his efforts and kept his mouth shut about them not being what he originally wanted. Unless Mike specifically asked him about it. That would indicate that he had some options for changing them. Otherwise, that probably wasn't a viable option. So, why needlessly make him feel like crap after he put all the effort into it?
