Very well done. Thank you. Nice review. (I am involved in a case involving localized cutaneous mycobacterium avium complex in an adult patient who is not immunocompromised and who doesn't have any evidence of pulmonary infection.) Good background information for health providers at any level of training.
How do you know it was localized cutaneous? Did you do skin biopsy and the stain came back positive or did you have to do a culture? Did you look at any other organs besides the chest (with a CT I presume) or just go based off symptoms?

Wow. I almost forgot about the case. The patient was asymptomatic (no fevers, chills, weight loss, etc.) and was not immunocompromised. The diagnosis was made with a simple skin culture (no tissue culture was done) of a chronic non-healing skin ulcer. The work-up was initially negative for any systemic involvement, including chest CT scan and CXR. The patient was send for further assessment, including evaluation of a regional joint that had undergone a recent surgery. I don't know the results of the work-up.
This provided great information for a patho tree I am working on for school. Thanks!

That under 50 t-cells part was what happened to me, back in the days when a t-cell count below 200 meant full-blown AIDS, and I caught this and it put me in the hospital over Thanksgiving week in 1996.

I have MAC.. I have a cavity re-met I can about a 3in cavity in my lung That being said mine is a relatively mild case. Initially they thought it was long cancer when they've caught it on a CT scan. Even on pet scan it came back as glowing but infections can go on a PET scan. When they found this I did have cancer and another area of my body and that actually glowed just a little brighter. It's strange because they actually could tell with the pet Scan that this looked more like an infection in my lawn. I think it's because of the uptake of the dye, cancer uptakes quicker than this dude and at a higher rate I believe. Anyway, I've been on antibiotics for about three months I just had another CT scan and it it's improved greatly with being on the antibiotics and I'm only on two of them because I take a medication that prevents me from being on the third animatic. I start Arikayce next week... I'm hoping to get rid of this eventually here. No one can figure out why I got it. It's really strange. I will add that I have Lynch syndrome also which causes different cancers. The doctor doesn't know how long I've had the Mac, he said that there's a CT scan done back in 2011 and there was some nodules where that cavity then. He can't say for certain but it could have started back then but he said I have definitely up for a few years at least. I really wish I knew where I got it😢 if anyone has any questions I'm more than happy to answer...
I too diagnosed with NTM, i felt bad because i have no idea where did i get this kind of bacteria, according to my Infectoius deseases doctor the treatment is very costly , around 4000 Phil Peso a day for one year treatment , that is about more than 1.5M . This is so sad.. I hope and pray that this bacteria will forever be inactive...

@@kathydegan8341 My first symptom was actually coughing a blood one night. I went to the hospital and they did a CT scan and told me I had a huge Mass on my lung, that was over 3 in. It looks like a mass on a CT, not a cavity, I think at that time it was abscess too so the cavity was filled with stuff. I had to wait weeks until they did a biopsy, and in the meantime I was getting more and more sick, coughing, fevers, just feeling like things were getting worse and worse for me. And I was told a lot times with lung cancer. That's how things happen. Anyway, they did the biopsy and it came back initially that I had Kleblieesa Pneumonia so they put me on a strong dose of antibiotics and I started to get better but then weeks later after growing samples in the petri dish they called me to tell me that they thought I had TB, so I had a TB test done and then they realized it was Mac because TB and Mac are in the same family. I do not know how I got this, I've had so much testing done, so much of it for allergies and things of that nature. I have no idea why I got this. My cavity has collapsed now and things have cleared but I've been on antibiotics...ZPak daily and ethambutol daily Plus the inhaled antibiotic, which I hardly ever did even though you're supposed to do that every day. But things cleared up for me pretty quickly. With Mac. You have to get tested for it and I believe they can usually tell by getting three early morning samples of your sputum!
@@giesalatar2670 are you okay now? It's not a good thing to have. But if you do have it you have to get it under wraps. Otherwise it can destroy your lungs!

I’m immune compromised and was diagnosed with this in2020 I’m 59 yo female and no one will treat it cause I have no colon at all ( ilesotomy and hypogammaglobulenemia) it just gets worse and worse my quality of life in 2024 has been horrible

I’m not too sure that antibiotics work for cancer.
Why are doctors not giving a biofilm buster so that the antibiotics can get inside the bacteria to kill it? These bacteria have figured out a way to protect themselves when in the human body. Also, most strains are contagious when active!

I don’t know? Jewish Health has been in charge for 100 years and they haven’t invented a medicine that kills the bacteria from within?
