OH NO, I'VE MUD ON MY BELSTAFF! | BMW F650GS GREEN LANING

  • "What, another bike?" I hear you ask. Yes indeed, since neither the Bultaco nor the Honda are ready to ride, and neither is particularly suited to long distances at any sort of useful speed, I was on the lookout for something a bit bigger, mostly for touring but also a little bit of off-roading here and there -- something I can actually put some miles on...
    In the end I got tempted by this super-low-mileage 2003 F650GS, a 652cc Rotax-engined water-cooled BMW, the same basic bike as Charley Boorman rode for the Dakar rally. With only about 13000 miles on the clock, it's pretty much a brand new bike!
    Green lanes: For those not familiar with green lanes, they're unsurfaced roads in the UK which vary from a gravel track to pretty tough trails. The main point is that they are legal roads -- vehicles need to be road legal, taxed, insured etc, but we ARE allowed to ride/drive on green lanes, despite what some ill-informed (or ill-meaning) locals and ramblers might argue! Unfortunately many green lanes are disappearing, but organisations like the TRF are working to help ensure we can enjoy green lanes whilst being respectful and mindful of other users.

    Thank you so much for this video. I am in more-or-less the same situation as you (existentially and geographically) - I have a WR250f for 'proper' off roading, and now want a 'biggish' roadbike for a bit of commuting and weekend jaunts. The F650GS/G650GS appeals (along with the KLE500 and the Aprilia Pegaso and a few others). Great to see a UK review of someone riding one of these on the road. Off to watch the next ep now! Best Regards from Cirencester!

      Thanks, that means a lot! I loved the F650GS, great bike - you might find a boxer or a newer F650 twin is a little better suited if you’re quite tall, but either way they’re great bikes. More videos coming soon I promise, I need to get better at editing them quickly!
      Cheers,
      Alex

      @@TittertonRacing thanks. I ended up buying a 2011 G650gs from South Wales. I prefer the slightly more modern styling it has over the older model.
      That said, I didn't realise that they had a lower and harder seat, so I am now on the hunt for a seat off your model to replace it with as I am on the tall and lanky side.
      I also have a wind problem.... 😬

    This is a really helpful video, thank you! What gear did you find yourself in most of the time on the first and second green lanes? It seemed like first gear would tractor you along just fine all the way up to 20 mph, yes?

    • @TittertonRacing
      @TittertonRacing  Před měsícem

      On the 650 1st was a good technical gear, like a tractor as you say, and then into 2nd for the longer/faster parts -- my R1150GS that I replaced it with was far too high geared, with a dry clutch too! At least on the 650 you can feather the clutch without fear of burning it up...

    We’re you out doing that with the street tires shown at the start of the video? Something more aggressive will increase your fun a lot

    • @TittertonRacing
      @TittertonRacing  Před 2 lety

      Yep! I agree on the green lanes some more knobbly tires would be a bit better suited, at the moment it's set up more as an all-rounder, mostly used on normal roads for weekends away etc, so I've just left these on. They're not all that bad on the trail, but as soon as it gets muddy they're pretty hopeless!

    Where are you riding, mate? Such a great green lane 👌🏻

      These lanes were in Somerset, one of relatively few counties left with many green lanes unfortunately...

      I live in Somerset, but can't find a lot such places. Have you got any postcodes or names of that lanes?

    Cool vídeo Alex, I've got a F650gs myself and I'm in love with the bike, what an awesome machine! Currently I'm preparing it for Offroad adventures. Check my channel and have a look 👍
