- Hue Play Light Bars With Hue Sync - Setup & Demo
If you're a fan of RGB, then the Hue Play Light Bars are the perfect addition to your existing or new lighting setup. In this video, I unbox and install the Light Bars behind my TV to fill the void left at the bottom of the TV after installing the Hue Gradient Lightstrip. I went with three lights as two wouldn't do the job.
I'll also show how you can use the lights with the HDMI sync box and an entertainment area to sync your content with the lights. The effect really is quite mesmerising. I have a Chromecast connected to my HDMI sync box and I stream content that way if I want the lights to sync.
I'm very happy with the end result, but please do stick around to see how to set them up, my detailed thoughts on the lights, what could be done to improve them and lots of demos.

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I finally have my Phillips Hue setup finished.
Congrats David!!
Very helpful, very well detailed and overall amazing 👊🏾
Thanks Mr Khalid, appreciate the support my brother
Thanks for the upload! Lot of interesting information. Thanks!
Thanks Johan and no problem
Wow lights are looking very good
And its a very good video to watch and it will be very useful to others .Well Done Keep it up ❤
Thanks for the kind words darling ❤️❤️
Great video mate! Straight to the point and full of specs unlike the rest which seem to just talk a lot of fluff and miss out the questions everyone has. Good job!
Thanks Michael for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful
Thats awesome man…I tried to do something like it with a CZcams video?..What do You think? czcams.com/video/FYctVXiSyzw/video.html&feature=share
Nice setup, however, the bottom lights are incredibly distracting in the low-firing position (because of the gaps). Maybe try pointing them at the wall to help diffuse the light? Or add a 4th one and pull them closer together. Great vid! :)
Yeah, I know what you mean. I was thinking about changing the orientation to make the light more even. Thanks for watching and commenting Arturo
Also the gaps do look more prominent on camera. They are less so in real life. I'll definitely do something about the gaps soon though

Nice setup! Juts got a set of lights myself. If you dont mind.. when did you get the soundproofing materials behind your TV from? They look really nice.
Thanks Jason. Not sure where you're based, but they're from a website called thewoodveneerhub. Based in the UK and you can get the panels in various colours
Great video, Just got mine ordered, I'm hoping three of these will negate the need for the gradient strip on my 55'
Thanks Michael, they should hopefully me enough!
Hi, awesome setup!! Congrats. Could you kindly tell me why you would place the play lights also on the tv as well as the led strip? I’m new! Thanks
Hi, thanks for the kind words. It's so that I can synchronise the content on my TV with the play light bars at the bottom. Before I added the play light bars, the space at the bottom of the TV was dark and it didn't look that good. I hope that answers your question.

Great video thanks. Just got the lights with the sync coming in about a week. Do you know if this syncs to a Sky box? I'm assuming that is the set top box they talk about?
Thank you. I would assume so. You'd connect the HDMI from the Sky Box to the Sync Box and it should just work.
Great video 👍 one question how do you get the lights to sync with the tv when watching Netflix & Amazon Prime etc ( UK ) ?
Thanks Lee. I have a Chromecast connected to the Hue sync box and I cast content through that
I'm in the same boat as you, I've currently got two of the Philips hue light strips behind my TV (one across the bottom, one across the top) however one of them the lights have gone a bit temperamental in the corner where they keep going off.
My TV is a 70" mounted on my wall so I do need light at the bottom or it looks odd.
I already have 3 Philips hue play bars and I've recently bought a gradient light tube to replace them, so I was thinking of attaching my 3 play bars at the bottom like yours 😊
However I was wondering if 3 would be good or if buying a 4th light bar would be better, or maybe it would be overkill having 4 behind the bottom of a 70" TV (two at each side).
I just want to try get the smoothest light blend that's all at the bottom 😊
They might be a bit squashed together having two at each side might they and then the middle wouldn't be even, so I'm thinking 3 is probably the best? 😊
I'm also a bit concerned about sticking the pads, I'm not the best at doing these things (you've done a wonderful job here!!) so if I needed to remove the adhesive pads at any point, I'm not sure how easy that would be to take them off at some point?
If only Philips made a light strip that went round all four edges of the TV 😔
Thanks for the kind words. I've now got an Ambiance Light Strip at the bottom instead of the Play Bars. If you're using a Light Tube I'd suggest not having the Play Bars installed at all as the tube would cover the bottom region
Thank you so much!! My TV is on my wall in the middle though and the light tube is going on my unit at the bottom on the floor, so I would need something for bottom of TV, just torn between what, it all confuses me haha.
Thank you so much for the kind reply, I really appreciate it!! 😊🙏🏼
@@AnimationAndMusicTimeTunnel No worries at all. The only other option is a separate Ambiance Light Strip or you could place 4 Play Bars like you mentioned in your original post
Are you able to play at 1440p? They say HDMI 2 and 4 are higher quality but I can’t get it to work
Hey Sergio, have you got the play bars connected to a monitor and you're trying to snyc the 1440p content?
I don't know why they didn't make the gradient 4 sided or at least have and add on to make it 4 sided.
Yeah, the dumbest part of the Hue gradient light strip. The add on strip would have made lots of sense. Thanks for commenting and watching Jason
Would you suggest these or a 55inch gradient strip for my LG CX 48inch? Cheers
I'd say the 55 inch would be sufficient. 65 might be a tad too big
@@ManchesterTechGuy Thanks for the reply. Would you say the gradient strip is worth the extra cost over the play lights?
@@tombeech9920 You're welcome. Yeah, I think so because you get a uniform light. With the play light bars there's a bit of space between each light, so it doesn't look as seamless
Maybe I miss it on the video but what size is your tv? I was thinking in going with two gradient strips. One on top and one on bottom. Is this even possible? For me buying 3 bars is about $230 and another gradient strip is $280….
Hi, my TV is 77-inches. Not sure if two strips will work properly since you can't really position both in the app. It might work, but without having another one to test, I can't be 100% certain
I tried to do something like it with a CZcams video?..What do You think? czcams.com/video/FYctVXiSyzw/video.html&feature=share
I need you to respond this question pls. Do you obligatory need a hue bridge for the light bars to function?
If you just want to use them without the Sync functionality, then you don't need the bridge
Those sticking pads are impossible to find, they have alternatives but they never hold like the original.
The command strips should work well. I've used them on my monitor and they've held up for over a year
£30 for the bridge...not bad...£115 now for a double pack of lights....not bad either......but another £200 + for the sync box add up to £350 to play some lights along side your TV.....all getting a bit pricey now
Yeah, it is expensive adding everything up. There are other solutions out there from the likes of Govee and I'm sure once there are more competitors, hue will have to lower their prices.
For me, the responsiveness and reliability of hue is above everything else I've owned. I have lifx and Govee lights and the overall experience is better with Philips Hue. They should definitely be cheaper though
Wait, do you absolutely need the sync bridge in order to sync the lights with the TV? This is virtually going to cost like $500 just to get 2 lights synced with the TV
Unfortunately yeah, you need the bridge and the sync box. Philips Hue were the first to release this tech and they are known to charge a premium. I wish the products were cheaper.
There are other companies releasing competing products, so Philips Hue may end up lowering prices.
In terms of reliability and responsiveness Hue lights are the best. I say this from experience as I own Govee and LIFX products
Hello noticed you have a sound bar. So how do u connect the ps and sound bar to the sync box .. my ps is connected to my sound bar and the sound bar connected to TV via hdmi2 arc
Hi, the soundbar is connected to the earc HDMI port on my TV and content played through the sync box uses whatever speaker I have assigned to the TV. It's just plug and play
@@ManchesterTechGuy much appreciated
@@ksks4205 You're welcome
So you don’t need a laptop to make the light sync work ?
Hi, if you have the HDMI sync box connected to your TV, any devices connected to the sync box automatically sync their content with the lights. I have a Chromecast and a Nintendo Switch connected to the sync box.
I can also connect a PC or laptop to the sync box to have the lights react. If you don't have a sync box, you can get the lights to sync on a PC or laptop via the Hue sync software. I hope this helps.
@@ManchesterTechGuy so can you use a stationary pc?
@@grasss-eater8928 Yeah, if I download the Hue App on the PC or connect the PC directly with the Hue Sync Box
mine didn’t come with a bridge why do i have to buy one that’s just more money
It doesn't come with a bridge unfortunately. I had a bridge from a few years ago, so I didn't have to buy it
@@ManchesterTechGuy ok thank you i ordered a bridge
Why didn't you move the play lights further up the back of the TV
Probably should have done that to give more even lighting. Thought the lower position would look better
@@ManchesterTechGuy I actually just got all of mine right now. Like I'm literally unboxing my 75 in gredient strip my Hue play Lights to sync box and the bridge. Do I have to have internet to the bridge to do this?
@@DanielBrown-lg6cn Nice. Yeah, I believe you will need access to the internet, although I haven't tested if it works without since it uses Zigbee to communicate with the lights.
@@ManchesterTechGuy so I got it all set up, works great with my 85" this was worth it compared to govee with the stupid camera. Expensive but worth it. Thanks you!
@@DanielBrown-lg6cn Yeah, the govee solution looks awful to me. Hue is expensive, but it's so much more streamlined.
Philips hue are soooo stipid they should just make the strip allway round tv simpol its daft the bars under tv as dont look even i have same i hate it but cant do.much till STUPID philips hue do a longer strips tipical. Expensive for less stuff not on at all in 2021 shame hue shame but have to stick to that miss my DREAMSCREEN allway round better 😃👍 fab set up man.
Yeah, shame it doesn't go all the way around. Hope they fix it in the next version, whenever that comes out. Probably a few years.
Thanks for watching and commenting, appreciate the feedback
"the bubble isn't straight but that's more than good enough for me" - why waste your time taping the level to it in the first place then?
Haha, you're right. I think because it was in the middle portion it's straight enough that you wouldn't notice just by looking. It probably only needed to be moved a millimetre either way. A bit silly of me to write the additional comment in hindsight
You went immediately from static to sync with no help
Hi Shawn, I made an earlier video showing the actual setup. Apologies if I moved too fast in this one
