    Two very reliable bikes, I have thousands of kilometers on an XR 400 R 1998, the XR 400 R ideal for slopes and the small CRF 230 is one of the best in the forest .

    I'm 5'11" and 185lbs. I have a '99 XR250R, a '00 XR400R, and an '06 CRF100F. The XR250 is awesome in the woods, the XR400 is awesome in more open country in Colorado, like forest maintenance trails, 4x4 trails and more open single track, and the little CRF100 is the best bike I've ever had for very seriously gnarly goat trails up steep rocky mountainsides, exploring super narrow, rocky gullies, and just about anywhere that you need a feather weight bike that climbs like a mountain goat with that granny gear it has. So it is no surprise at all that your CRF230 is super in those ultra tight woods, that's what that bike is make for! They call the little bikes beginner bikes. Not necessarily. Each type of bike has it uses for skilled riders.

      Yeah, they're pretty well memorized LOL. I'd have to say my 230 is my all around favorite, it's just plain fun. My current stable also includes a 00 CR250r, '84XL200r, and I just added a 04 CRF250x to the mix. Haven't owned or gotten a good ride on a XR250 yet, one day for sure.

    Video above does not show the real strengths of an xr400r, I don't have any problems beating 450s and 250s four stroke or two 400 is a dominant engine from Honda with the right work done to it.

    Ive been looking at xr400s for a few days. This would be my first bike period, although I have lots of ride time on quads. Do you think it would be a good fit? Im 6'2" 250 which is why im leaning towards a large bike. I think i'd probably hurt myself on a 250 2 stroke.

    • @JeremyFoytik
      @JeremyFoytik  Před 7 lety +1

      I think the xr400 would be a good bike, better yet would be a CRF450x. Nice smooth power, modern bike, most importantly electric start. The X models require nowhere near the maint the R models carry.

      Jeremy Foytik I've also been looking at an xr250r, lots of guys on CZcams have owned them for 10+ years and love them to death. I'm just not sure it would be enough power for my size.

    • @JeremyFoytik
      @JeremyFoytik  Před 7 lety +2

      The XR250r is rock solid as well. However you would have to wring it out more to keep her on the power. I think for your size the 400 would be a much better option.

    • @trevorjameson3213
      @trevorjameson3213 Před 7 lety +1

      Yep, I'm one of the guys who has owned my XR250R since '99 when I bought it new. I weigh 182lbs so it's perfect for me and plenty of power. Also my bike has been, and remains, bullet proof reliable. But I have ridden the XR400's before, and while yes I like the extra power, the 400 felt too heavy for me. My XR250R will climb, and has climbed, some of the most difficult, steepest trails in the mountains of Colorado and Utah, so the bike is definitely capable. It is also exceptionally good in tight woods single track! So it's no surprise to me that the CRF230 is also a great woods bike.

      KING TROLL I have an 1996 XR400 and it's always full choke and two kicks, starts every time. I hold the front bake and grip the throttle forward to ensure it doesn't cause a hard start. Works every time. If I flood it which is very rare. The drill is turn gas off throttle wide open kick several times to clear gas. Also my first kick is a soft one to make sure I am on the compression stroke when starting.

      I have a 2003. They can be hard to start but once you work them out they start every time.
      From cold you need to turn up the idle a good few turns, choke, do some soft repeating kicks. Once that’s done, find top dead centre and boom she’s running. Doesn’t matter how long since it’s been started, that will do it.

      DeMiGoDfIsH3 I didn't care for the bee stinger look of the ProCircuit exhaust on the bike. So I shortened the canister so it barely sticks out past the side panel. It looks and sounds much more attractive now. I'm sure it didn't help power output at all, but the whole point of this bike has nothing to do with power. It's all about handling and traction.

      Well that's certainly the popular opinion. However the sole point of this comparison was to shed a different light. I'm 5'11" weighing in at 165. I currently own the crf230 a crf250x and a cr250r. All of them are setup for my weight, size and riding ability. All 3 are with in seconds of each other on my full test course (longer than in this video). All of which is typical east coast single track. I'll go a step further and say out of all my bike the 230 puts the biggest smile on my face, maybe because most have your train of thinking.
