  • Dear UCI - please stop trying to ban things because they look weird!
Simon von Bromley has had enough of cycling’s governing body banning innovative technology and believes it is doing so because of the way things look.
The changes come after the UCI announced it would be undertaking an “in-depth analysis” of what it says is the “current and wider trend in time-trial helmet design, which focuses more on performance than the primary function of a helmet”.
Do you agree? Let us know in the comments.

UCI allows for dangerous courses, dangerous barrier design, and have consistently failed in regards to rider safety and innovating promotion and fan viewership. They need to focus on doing these well before getting petty with the shape of a helmet.

  • @laneromel5667

I like watching riders with big helmets, like watching Space Balls.

  • @Sutlore007

Are we wearing helmet for aero not for safety? What are your shoulders gonna be like after crashed while wearing a large helmet like that? The edge of the helmet looks sharp to me.

  • @nuttynut722

I agree, those mullet are out of control

  • @savagepro9060

For ONCE, I side with the UCI, right there. In fact I'll even go further, UCI should impose a special banning category based on aesthetics. These helmets ARE fkin ugly, too ugly!

  • @UKBROOKLYN

"Denting the sports commercial viability ".... Wha ?? How many Darth Vader helmets do you think they were going to sell ??

  • @TenSapphires

Dear Simon, your opinion is on point! You, so eloquently, said much about everything I think on matter. I just have one more example that agrevated me: in 2021. Aero Breakaway handlebar were UCI approved just to disqualifie riders after races for resting forearms on handlebars. Poor inventor took all his chases, took loans to make his invention a product just to UCI pull rug under his feet. That green light-red light policy harms UCI and cycling.

  • @SecwetGwiwer

I’d normally be with you on this but that helmet makes me feel embarrassed to be a cycling fan.

  • @davidheathfield5040

Finally someones said it. We lose out as consumers out because bike companies are held back from innovating. Just think how fast our bikes and equipment would be by now if the big bike companies could go wild.

  • @hisdadjames4876

I, for one, love the fact that pro bikes and kit are quite similar to my own. Formula 1 and America’s Cup machines may be impressive, but they’re far too alien and expensive for me to relate to. Plus, they tend to marginalise the human performance factor. So, I fully support the UCI strategy…much as you are right to chastise them for their flaws in its execution.

  • @xtianeskay5166

Thank you for your information and your honest opinion. I agree with what you say.

  • @Smax370

I’d imagine they’re screwing the sport just like they’ve screwed EWS/EDR or whatever you want to call it, seems to me like UCI are a little outdated

  • @peterthe46er

Those helmets give me a good laugh. Anyone using it looks ridiculous. So don't ban it. I can't imagine anyone actually paying for it for their private use.

  • @Xhadp

"The Aerohead 2.0 extends forwards as well" This is the biggest problem I have with it and why I think they are revising it. It isn't staying with the boundaries because that is needed to make safety but instead shoving a ludicrous amount of foam in there in the guise of safety. Same thing with making a massive TT visor like on the Rudy helmet.

  • @rekik66

I wonder if you can add aero that’s designed to break off on impact just like F1 cars? It’s not a structural piece of the helmet or whatever but aids in aero.

  • @jeskli11

Absolutely agree with everything you said in the video! The recent reactions from UCI made me think they would ideally put everyone in woolen jerseys on the same steel bike from the ninetees and let all manufacturers in the sport go bankrupt.

  • @blurglide

They should eliminate all equipment rules except very basic safety rules. If they want to do something about head-down riding, they shouldn't have banned recumbents. Also, riders and their teammates should be required to do all repairs themselves. Get ready to see more reliable tires!

  • @andre9095

Traditional aesthetics narcs are why we haven’t invested in things like roll cages, because that’s a fering, and ferings are cheating because they don’t….

  • @BARTHEZ42

I don't think that F1 regulation changes are much different than UCI. I don't follow F1 too much but as far as I know they are also new regulations every year.

  • @edllorca9468

The UCI has not held back progress, just look at todays bikes vs 30 years ago. Yes the UCI can be anal sometimes (look at cockpit setup regulations) but in this particular case, those helmets look downright unsafe even harmful in a crash.
