As a New Zealander, whilst its always great to hear of the aura of the black jersey, what is unfortunately unheralded is the aura, in the collective Kiwi consciousness, of South Africa - the high veldt; Afrikaans; the Boer War, the contours of a colonial experience yet wholly different; the history of All Blacks teams practicing scrums on the decks of ships travelling for weeks across the Indian Ocean; and the sense of another nation which, aside from Wales, had rugby as intrinsic to its identity; and the sense of a poised and balanced rivalry. Even with the interconnectedness of the modern age, the resonances of that aura remain. What's most astonishing, almost magical really, is that through more than a century of tumult and upheaval, geopolitical change, Apartheid, post-apartheid, amateurism to professionalism and diversity - tests between the two nations are still preternaturally a toss of a coin. Aussies never come to the dressing room after a test, but Springboks do - and it seems to me that the tests are so momentous as occasions, that the teams want to share the catharsis afterward.

Beautifully put. Having had the privilege to have spent quite some time traveling in New Zealand as a young man from the South African Highveld, I can testify to a kindred spirit and sense of brotherhood between us. While rugby is its symbol, it definitely runs much deeper. God bless from South Africa 🇳🇿 🇿🇦 !

What a summary! Agree as a South Africa. There is an ethereal otherworldliness to this rivalry. It also comes out of a deep mutual love between the countries, we see each other as the frontier twins separated at birth from their English mother. Self reliant, tough.

Here in NZ the respect we have for the Springboks cannot be understated. We see them as the ultimate opponent for the All Blacks to really test themselves but the coolest thing is there’s no animosity in this rivalry just the biggest of respect for each other.

I am going to spend some time with this, because there is a deeper connection which few are aware of. I am from the little town of Despatch in the Eastern Cape where Rassie is from. We lived two streets away from the sports grounds where the Despatch rugby team practiced every Tuesday and Thursday evening, and the lights from the grounds would shine directly into my bedroom window. In those day I was at school with people like Danie Gerber and Pote Human, both who became big names in South African Rugby. But the connection is Despatch, and the passion that little town had for its rugby. There was an annual club competition being held called where Despatch would play against the best club teams in the country, such as Diggers from Johannesburg. Within the local area Despatch would regularly play against local clubs in Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, such as Old Collegians (OUSHA!!!), Swifts, and Parks from PE. Those were wonderful days and in later years I also played for Despatch but only in the lower teams. I was a skinny lad. Some years later when I was in the Fire Department in Uitenhage we would also play against Despatch 3rds, and always got a hammering from them. But it was fun.
However, it was the grounding of a love for the game, and this is, I firmly believe, the grounding for the love and passion that Rassie has for the game. Despatch was rugby, and rugby was Despatch. Here are the GPS coordinates of the rugby field where Rassie plied his trade in those early years:
    33°48'5.45"S
    25°27'11.53"E
To see Rassie be the man that he is today, having outgrown the arrogant player he once was, is testimony to the love for the game and the background and culture that being a Despatcher brings. Those roots go deep.
Tonight is going to be an epic game, and it will also be the story of the oukie from Despatch who made it.

One of the greatest stories shared my brother, I simply love the history of Despatch, you are so lucky to have that type of upbringing, hopefully tonight the lights will shine again on your window and the Despatch legacy will continue, Rassie have become one of the greatest South Africans ever to live and tonight we share such a great rival as the All Blacks, they are so humble and such awesome people and humans, only respect for them but tonight we calling on the Despatch culture to live up with its history, i think those co ordinates you gave was wrong it's should be 7/1, Go Rassie, Go Bokke, Go Despatch ❤

I think the rivalry was best explained by Richie McCaw - after a brutal test against the Boks a few years ago, he said that Schalk Burger came up to him, shook his hand and said “Richie, why the hell do we keep doing this to each other?”
The relationship is one that’s built on absolute respect. Both teams know how dangerous the other is, and both teams have almost always held the top spots in world rugby. We love to play each other but hate it at the same time because of how much of a headache the other is.

As a Kiwi, the relationship between us and Sth Africa runs very deep. As a kid in 81 I remember the protests against the SA tour, learning from the elders about the history and importance that rugby had and how hard it was to win in SA and the whole reason there were protests. I remember the joy when SA came back to NZ in 94 and Otago beat the Springboks and hurt of the 95 RWC final. There is well earned respect for their team and victory is never easy.

Big Thank you from New Zealand Tim. I have really enjoyed this RWC, especially since the All Black's took out the QF. After the loss to France, we were stressed about the ABs making it out of the pools. It's great to see the ABs peaking at the right time(learnt the hard way in 2007). I have always been a fan of Sam Cane. So pleased that Cane is getting the praise he deserves. I especially love the way Cane handled the negative comments from Peter omahony. Watching Cane, Ardie Savea and Frizell work together on the field and really make a huge impact on game. That has been special. I noticed in the comments before the Ireland game, that is was the South African fans saying not to underestimate the All Black's. Just shows how well the SA fans know the ABs. And I love the respect there is between New Zealand and South Africa(like a sibling relationship) teams. It's going to be a great game (8am here in New Zealand). Hope there are no major injuries. My guess is the All Black's win by 4.

As a kiwi my memories of our rivalry include the flour bomb test, the rise of Lomu, Mandela handing Francois the 95 RWC trophy and sharing these words: “Francois, thank you for what you have done for the country,” to which Francois Pienaar replied, “No, Mr. Mandela, thank you for what you have done for the country.”, Fitzpatrick on his knees thumping the ground the following year to take SA in a series on SA soil, the Boks record of 5 straight wins against England at RWC’s without conceding a try, and among many other memorable moments for me the impact of Richie McCaw and his 77% success rate in 26 tests against South Africa. Let’s go. May our rivalry and respect never fade.

Thank you sir. You have been one of a very few pundits - professional ones on TV included - that I have really enjoyed!
Interesting side note. Apparently, and this is in the media, our Minister of Sport has been in conversations with Rassie to become involved and try to instill the same values and pride in our national soccer team. That is how much value there is placed in the accomplishments of this Springbok team.
In closing, yes, well deserved and thorough respect between SA and NZ rugby. Always a privilege and joy to watch these games...

Tim, thanks for your incredible coverage of the last 7 weeks in France. It was fun experiencing the sights and sounds with you. Your incredibly passion for the game and wonderfully unbiased commentary is what has taken this channel to new heights and long may it continue.
The anticipation is palpable here in SA this morning. Listening to Leon Schuster's old Hier Kommie Bokke album with my kids today brings back those childhood memories of '95 when last these 2 teams met in the final. The fans of these 2 teams have rugby in their bones, brought about by a lifetime of special experiences in and around the game, etched into our memories from childhood. May the best team win. I hope it is the Boks today!

Waxing philosophical this morning, Tim! Some nice words and insights as always, there is so much history between NZ and SA. Internally and externally it is our shared love and passion.
I had to pull the blacks on this morning and go for a long run to get some of the energy out. Wherever we are across the world, kiwis and bokkes will be feeling like they’re running out onto the paddock in Paris tonight. When we see those boys in our respective colors we feel pride, honor, and yes you said it many times - respect.
Can’t wait for this final contest. Sent from All Black HQ in sunny NYC.

From heading to Bordeaux from Ireland to glorious heat in camper. To coming back to the quarter finals to Paris to freezing cold. Been some journey . The craic we had is unforgettable. And new friends iv made.
Not going to lie , but I'm still not over Ireland, been knocked out, and do think it's less of spectacle with out either us or France in it. But that's life. And we'll done SA and Nz.

As a Bloemfontein born full blooded springbok supporter. In the 90’s my dad used to wake me up at 3am to see this rivalry. Best of luck to both and the worst thing about this game is that there must be a loser. It will probably be Brody, Sam, Deons and Vermeulen’s last game. These are some of the best players in their respected positions for over a decade and I am truly going to miss them but they deserve their rest! Slight error at 5:36, it was David Kirk who lifted the trophy in '87. Sean Fitzpatrick was actually only playing because the original Hooker and squad captain Andy Dalton was injured and didn't play a game during the start of the world cup. By the end however, probably couldn't keep Fitzy off the team.

🏉I remember back in the late 1950s when as kids we would watch our parents gather around the valve radio late at night in a small coastal village in NZ listening to the revered Springbok team of that era coached by the great Danie Craven. Those 'Bok teams of the 1950s & 60s were titans of the game, the clashes with the All Blacks were the ultimate. So, yes I'm ancient now but still looking forward immensely for tonight's grandfinal. As an American who has been a Springbok fan for two decades, I gained a special appreciation of the level of respect in this rivalry when I went to Wellington in September of 2018 to watch a Rugby Championship match between them. Like many of the actual South Africans attending the game I was wearing a green/gold Bok jersey and witnessed an epic (36-34) SA win on Kiwi soil….but afterwards, many New Zealanders came up to me to warmly congratulate “my” team on the win, a vibe I felt that permeated the stadium. (If you haven’t seen that match, I recommend going back and pulling up a video; you will enjoy it. A real classic.) I’m quite familiar with many of the other great rivalries you cited (Lakers-Celtics, Yankees-Red Sox, Djokovic-Nadal, Barça-Real….I’d add Ohio State-Michigan in American college football - I’m an OSU grad), but I think you may be on to something, given the roots and complications of the SA-NZ ties over the years. Really enjoyed this channel during the World Cup and hope you go down to South Africa to watch the two sides play again in the Championship next summer (winter for them).

Love this work. And love the comments! Loved that piece of respect and nostalgia from the fan from dispatch;)
Just want to shout out to the SA All Black fans. Love hearing the respect the current ABs and Boks have for the history and story of those fans.
This generation of the Boks have done more than any before them to undo the hurt and racism of the past.
They recognise those fans aren’t traitors. They’re the opposite. I’m sure they all back SA and many of the older generation now will even back the Bok emblem but they will never forget the way the All Blacks represented the power of inclusivity and the people that protested and stood up for inclusion in South African sport when so many people in South Africa didn’t seem to care.
It’s a small part of the story today…drove from Cape Town to Swellendam yesterday and every town, township, neighbourhood and farm was getting ready for today…bok and SA flags everywhere.
A few AB flags and jerseys around but it’s respect not antagonism and O bet tonight if the Boks with those fans will celebrate with their families and all South Africans.
And if the AB’s win they won’t gloat.
It’s a small part of an amazing rivalry and legacy. But a good part. Not a bad one.
    Thanks Tim!!
    With we were there!
    Go Bokke!

Watched my first AB vs Springboks rugby test in 1960 when Wilson Whinery captained the ABs. Legendary Bok flank Martin Pelser scored just in front of me. Recall Colin Meades, Brian Lochore, Bryan Williams playing against Boks in 1970 and then Andy Leslie's 1976 ABs. Everything was about respect. Getting up to listen to games between the two rugby nations at 4am. Those were special days.
Going to be a special occasion this evening and hopefully the Boks can win it back to back. At my age i dont have too many World Cups in me so just maybe the Boks can do it for me. Miss the tours. Respect to all.

I grew up in the 70’s and 80’’s in SA. Back then we loved our a rugby and we always talked about the AB’s. There were boycotts of SA back then and we were starved from competition. BUT years later having lived for 30 years outside of SA but always loyal to Bok Rugby i realized that back in the 80’s no black South African would ever dare to put on a green jersey and today WOW has Rugby truly United a nation like no other. Watching the fans unite has moved me even more than the Rugby itself.
