omg, the girl nailed it.. It's literally like they were villains.. the concept is EXO vs X-EXO, where the latter is the dark side, like evil clones.. in the MV it shows them fighting against their own version of X -EXO.. The live stage of this song is insane, the choreography is mesmerizing, I think you would like to see it, here's a suggestion :)
Furthermore, my video suggestion is the live performance "Mama+Monster+Wolf" (it’s kinda dark too) is simply one of the most incredible shows you will see in kpop, all of them are on another level..

6:35 Exo’s live performance of their songs Mama, Monster and Wolf is amazing, it has that dark edgy kinda vibe so you guys might enjoy that, the instrumentals, dance performance and of course their vocals are crazy good. I think for this performance they merged the 3 songs together so they seamlessly transition into the next song. Mama is also Exo’s very first debut song from 2012 so you might want to check the music video out for that but it does have quite a different vibe and sound to anything you have probably heard in kpop before so just a warning, it’s a little weird but in a good way😂 Love the reactions, glad your enjoying Exo, hope to see more Exo content from you guys!

you should know that this mv plays a huge role with exo's lore, they were fighting w their clones/evil counterparts. well, all mvs, solos, vcrs, ad commercials, songs, spoilers and even concert and award show concept is related to exo's lore. exo invented lore in kpop and its so fun to watch all the mv while theorizing but even you don't, they will still sweep you with unbeatable vocals, crazy choreos and dance steps. here in obsession, crop top and face chain were not a trend yet but after this was released, a lot of kpop grps did the same too.
What you saw in the "Obsession" MV was that EXO's doppelgangers were actually their alter ego clones and they were using their superpowers, such as Chanyeol with his fire power, Sehun uses his wind power to deflect the arrows, Baekhyun uses his power of light as a saber in the fencing battle, Chen uses his ability to control electricity (because he has the power of thunder and lightning) to manipulate something to do with the TVs that are playing behind him and Suho (the one with red hair) controls water in the room with all the pictures of water, etc. to fight their other selves. At the very end you see the planet on fire in the end of the MV because it's supposed to show how the world is coming to an end as EXO (the good guys in all black) and X-EXO (the evil ones in the colorful outfits with crazy hair and makeup) battle for control, etc. (Each of the members are playing 2 different characters.)
X-EXO has been created by the evil Red Force and EXO and X-EXO are fighting each other. EXO are trying to prevent X-EXO from taking over and corrupting humanity and X-EXO are trying to stop EXO from finding the Tree of Life and putting the two halves back together and restoring peace, etc.
To truly understand EXO, you need to be aware that EXO debuted in 2012. "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV and it's how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept -- and since then, everything SM does branches off from that storyline. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet Exo and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one, if not all of them, using their powers.
Now you also need to know that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. So, to really understand their full origin story, you have to watch both the K and the M version of "Mama", because the EXO-K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the EXO-M version focuses on the M members and their powers.
However, since then, 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group -- short answer to focus on their solo work back in China -- but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 members.) However, now -- because they no longer have enough Chinese members -- they no longer do separate promotions, but they still produce almost all of their MVs and main songs in both Korean and Mandarin, they just now promote all as one group EXO with 9 members. However, in the "Obsession" MV there are only 6 members -- Suho, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, Kai and Sehun -- because 2 of the members -- D.O. and Xiumin -- are on hiatus during this comeback as they serve in the military; and due to the political issues between the Korean and Chinese government, Lay -- their Chinese member -- was unable to participate in activities with the group.
So, each new MV or project from EXO tells another part of the story, and over the years we fans have started to create a timeline and idea of what we think each part of the story is telling us. However, the introduction of "Obsession's" part of the story really threw all of our theories for a loop, and it has made us question everything we previously have ever thought was happening in EXO's storyline.
On the surface level one interpretation of the lyrics could be that it's talking about obsessed fans. But EXO songs never have only one meaning. If you delve in deeper, it's actually talking about society in general and people's greed for material goods, money, fame, etc. All the things that people can become obsessed with that aren't what they truly need. With EXO's storyline it is thought that the Red Force is controlling humanity by preying on our gluttonous greed for all things material, and making us forget about showing each other love and compassion and respect, etc.
The MV starts out with the red and blue light because it's supposed to represent how EXO are currently battling with X-EXO and the Red Force for control. In EXO's MVs when you see red light or anything that is red, this represents the Red Force, and when you see blue light or anything that is blue, this is thought to represent EXO. Therefore, when you see red and blue in one scene or purple -- red and blue mixed together make purple -- this is showing how the line between the two sides is being blurred and they are fighting each other, etc.
Since "Obsession," some think maybe EXO has been trapped somewhere from the very beginning and it has been X-EXO that we have been following all along. But I think it's still even more complex than that. I think at times we have been watching EXO, and at times we have been watching X-EXO -- with the release of "Obsession" we have only just discovered that the story hasn't necessarily been showing EXO the whole time.
With the new information provided to us through "Obsession," it also makes me question how Lay fits within the X-EXO/EXO storyline. Maybe he is one of the members who has been able to break free or avoid the Red Forces' control. In Lay's solo MV for "Sheep," the Allen Walker relift version, we see everything burning outside as if an apocalypse is happening. Maybe "Sheep" is showing us the planet burning from Lay's viewpoint, like we see the world burning at the end of the "Obsession" MV. And we now think it is linked to EXO's new "Let Me In" MV, where we see a meteor on a collision course for Earth and EXO are trying to figure out how to prevent it from destroying the world.
Also, I believe that the storyline in "Obsession" is connected to SuperM's debut "Jopping" MV storyline. If you pay attention to what Baekhyun and Kai were wearing in "Obsession," those all-black outfits are very similar to the black outfits that Baekhyun and Kai are wearing in the "Jopping" MV. Kai is even wearing the same backpack parachute in both MVs, which seems to be SM Entertainment's way of making sure we see the connection between those MVs.
Therefore, it is thought that, as part of SuperM's storyline, Baekhyun and Kai have gathered the best of the best of SM's groups -- Taemin from SHINee, Taeyong and Mark from NCT, Ten from WayV and Lucas who is a former member of WayV -- to help them battle the Red Force, and maybe, eventually, take down X-EXO. Just like the Marvel Avengers come together as individual superheroes with their own storylines to create the Avengers and to fight evil, it is thought that SuperM is coming together to create the ultimate supergroup to help EXO fight the evil and corruption inflicted on humanity by the Red Force.
Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we as EXO-L (EXO fans) have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, song lyrics, albums, concert VCRs, choreography and even live performances and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all. And not only are EXO's and SuperM's MVs and storylines connected, but pretty much all of SM's groups have storylines and concepts that connect together, which is designed to become part of one giant graphic novel or movie in the SM Culture Universe.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in EXO's MVs and live performances, here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
EXO-K
💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeon) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho.)
💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light
🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.
🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt), which gives him super strength/force
☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation (Kai means opening as in a door or gateway, so his stage name is meant to symbolize his role in the group.)
🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind
EXO-M
❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost)
🦄 Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the group, he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and rapper -- his power is the ability to heal anything.
🌩 Chen (Kim JongDae) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control thunder/lightning/electricity
(As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M because they are the Korean members of the Chinese group.)
The Chinese members who are no longer part of the group, but are still an important part of EXO's storyline:
🐉 Kris was the leader of EXO-M he was a main rapper and vocalist -- his power was the ability to fly and his spirit animal was a dragon (Kris left the group in April 2014.)
💭 Luhan was a main vocalist and his power was telekinesis (The ability to control things with his mind) (Luhan left the group in October 2014.)
⏰Tao (Z.Tao) was a lead rapper and vocalist and the martial artist of the group, so he did the flips and stunts in the group's routines. His power was the ability to control time (Tao ended activities with EXO in August 2015.)

Obsession was literally one of the last comebacks of 2019, literally today marks 4 years and even though there were incredible comebacks that year, Billboard decided that Obsession was the best song of 2019 and that the kpop crown was safe in the hands of EXO.

They only have a few dance videos, but all are worth checking out. The latest choreo for Cream Soda is insane even though it is missing their main dancer (Kai, in the military). To balance that, you could always react to some of his solo work to see his skills. In fact, they are very successful in sub groups (EXO CBX and EXO SC), and as solo artists. Again, it's up to you. Baekhyun's Bambi is on the darker side, EXO's Lotto (Louder) or Jekyll (watch the live version) are also. One of the many wonderful things about EXO is that you can just randomly pick any track and be confident you'll love it.

EXO have always been this iconic, their debut MV was MAMA which y’all heard in Killing Voice. It was the one y’all described as Dracula sounding. I remember being shock by it the first time seeing it, especially the screamo part, it honestly shocked me to the point I wasn’t for it, but later came back to it and liked it, now it’s my jam and I can sing and scream every word. No one had ever debuted to a song that dark and unusual at that point, mind you, it was 2012 so it was an extremely bold move on their company’s part, SM. They always made bold videos and have been legends because of it, so ahead of their time. It was really controversial, as was Wolf. And Growl is what literally built the COEX museum, all of a sudden so many groups started doing it. It was literally filmed in one shot and will always hold place in K-pop history.
If you want to hear Chen's vocals, like the guy in the middle in killing voice, YOU MUST LISTEN TO EL DORADO or DROP THAT!!!! Big recommendation and Lightsaber and Transformers. They perform Lightsaber in water!!!

Personally, I don't categorize their choreos as crazy but more on the suave/cool instead to compliment their songs.
If you want dark concepts I would recommend their OLDER songs like: MAMA, WOLF, OVERDOSE, and LOTTO MVs.
It is HIGHLY recommended also to watch their MAMA+MONSTER+WOLF Concert Remix - it's a classic mind blowing masterpiece.
