I love that Mathew was like "It's a little fruity" during Bet On It, but totally missed the fruitiness throughout I Don't Dance. I once played it, audio only, for my fiance who'd never seen any of the movies, and his first response was "Did they mean to make it sound gay or not?"

More like Bi school musical.
I believe there was an interview with Kenny Ortega where he said having Lucas Grabeel play Ryan with gay undertones and having a scene/ song like this between Ryan and Chad is the closest they could come at the time to showing anything LGBTQ+ related on a DCOM. Anything more explicit, especially if the relationship or character was shown in a distinctly positive light (like how Ryan was kind of neutral in the first, but he turns into a sweetie in this movie), and the producers would come down hard and have it removed.

I Don't Dance context: Corbin Bleu sings and dances as part of the movie's songs, but the actual character, Chad, is an athlete who can't stand the thought of performing in a play. In the first movie, he was one of the people who originally tried to stop Troy from performing. The kids in this movie want to put on a performance and they want Chad to be a part of it. I Don't Dance is Ryan trying to convinced Chad that if he can do something like sports then Chad can do something like perform. Chad doesn't respect performers, so Ryan is trying to earn his respect while simultaneously convince him there is a performer in him.

Gosh, these movies were such a huge part of my youth. I remember singing "Gotta Go My Own Way" from the top of my lungs, weeping and trying to do both parts all at once even though I hadn't gone through any kind of heartbreak yet at that point. :D And that song started to hit even harder over time. I'm glad you started the new year with this movie and I hope you'll react more to this saga. Thank you.
Growing up, since I would only be focusing on the movie, multiple times "Gotta Go My Own Way" would make me cry. I could just feel how sad it is to go through that kind of break up even though I was only 8 years old and hadn't even experienced attraction to anyone yet. The song is that powerful.

I love your reactions lol and honestly, in my humble opinion, Gabriella was the only character that stayed truth to herself during the entire series! No jk. She's consistent and very fair. Like you said, she wants it to work out but she doesn't belong there anymore so she's leaving her own path... because that's healthy. I'm just saying this here because I agree that this is a different type of breakup song for these movies (especially DCOMs), so yeah Gotta Go My Own Way is probably in my top 3 HSM songs

Honestly though, for the last one you need to watch the whole movie because the songs are weird out of context - The movie is seriously the best one of the series though, they really went out with a bang. The production value is better, the budget is there, the concepts, the costumes, it's all so good 😂

"I've Got to go my Own Way" you can tell that the first verse is Gabriella telling Troy he'll be ok. The second verse is her convincing herself he'll be ok and that she has to do this. The bridge has Troy trying to convince her and the final verse is Gabriella standing strong with her decision, but she's clearly in pain and trying to convince herself Troy will be ok and that this is right.

High School Musical 3 makes me tear up every time just because I have been through my senior year of high school and have seen a lot of the issues dealt with in that movie. The baseball song went viral for being coded in homosexuality, basically when he says I don't dance he's talking about something else, supposedly because at the end of the scene they change clothes it was kind of implied, but the whole point was that Ryan was supposed to be queer coded, but Disney didn't like that so they took it out but that's what everyone was talking about on the Internet because Kenny Ortega wanted him to be so when watching the scene there's a few different ways you can interpret it, either as him talking about dancing or him talking about something else.
I don't dance is my favorite song in the series and at some point it was either confirmed by the director or at least a theory started that the song is an allegory for coming out and chad not being ready too come out as bi and Ryan already being out as gay or at least everyone knows - this theory is also held up not just by the baseball analogy and song but also in the next scene when everyone is having lunch after the game it is implied that they hooked up because they're wearing each others shirts and hats,

Funny thing this movie was actually filmed like 5 minutes away from my house in my hometown of St. George. In the first song specifically you can see the red rocks and many of the fancier houses have that weird architecture.
the second movie is probably the most beloved, to me it goes second, first and then the third movie. the third one has by far the biggest budget tho and you can REALLY tell lmao

In HSM2, it's summer break. Sharpay gets Troy hired at her parents' country club for his first job, and Troy gets all his friends hired as well. Sharpay manipulates the work environment so that all Troy's time is monopolized. She gets him preferential treatment, while his friends are treated as normal employees and Gabriella gets in trouble for every perceived mistake. Troy's poor time management causes him to miss a couple of dates with Gabriella, and that combined with her job treatment leads to 'I Gotta Go My Own Way'.
haven’t even watched this yet but I just KNOW it’s gonna be good because you’re reviewing a hsm movie, and that entire trilogy (especially the last one) is perfection
When watching all of these songs out of context without the rest of the film not in order as well it can be really hard to know what's going on, a lot of these songs make more sense when you first watch them in order as well as watch them alongside the rest of the movie, so it's understandable that you'll be a bit thrown or confused by different pieces like why was Zach on a golf course it will make sense if you watch the film butit's funny to see your reaction.
It's a crime that Fabulous and the kitchen song weren't listened to...

ok in the part that they are singing "Everyday" and that Troy looks confused to where Gabriella's voice coming from, is that earlier on in the movie she leaves bc Sharpay was trying to get him into these fancy dinners, and doing a bunch of stuff, and well he wasnt getting a lot of quality time with Gabriella so, Gabs chooses to leave the country club (thats when she sings gotta go my own way), and also Troys friends feel the same way but they dont leave, they just dont talk to him, but then a little bit more halfway thru the movie, he fixes things with his friends , and then originally he was suppose to sing with Sharpay but then he decided not to and thats when starts singing his part in everyday , and was so surprised to see and hear Gabriella.

The High School Musical franchise holds a special place in my heart. It came out when I was entering High School and most of my years in HS I was sick so these films helped cheer me up in those hard days. Hope to see more of the songs from 2 and ofcourse later on from 3.
