In this clip, Morris Day opened up to VladTV about Prince giving him the option of putting together his own band after he recorded "Get It Up" at Prince's studio. From there, Morris and Prince cut the entire first album for The Time, got a deal with Warner Bros. and put the band together after the album was complete. To hear more, including how Prince convinced Morris to lead the band, hit the above clip.

Morris Day opened up to VladTV about Prince taking creative control on The Time's first album by playing all the instruments and laying out their vocal arrangements, despite having big talent in the group. Morris explained that Prince used the pseudonym "Jamie Starr" in the album credits, but Morris said he wasn't hiding behind the name. He went on to speak about The Time going on Prince's "Controversial" tour and Prince starting beef between The Time and his band by throwing eggs during their show. You can hear how the whole thing unfolded above.
I can never get tired of listening to Morris about the Time's era.
Same here
Prince related stories period
mane what, tha Time was tha damn sh!t
The Time one of the best underrated bands ever
Seriously
Yup!!!
Facts. Watch Bruno Mars and don’t tell me Morris Day didn’t influence him as much as Michael Jackson or Prince.
Big fan of Prince, The Time, Vanity 6, The Family.....that whole era. Heard about the dissent between Prince and The Time, but never at this level of detail. I love hearing these stories, but gotta get the book.
Tina Green yup. Music is legendary. All of it
I have, in fact there are more stories direct from other members if my memoirs serves me right in the Possessed book and in individual Uptown fanzine issues.
For real for real

I literally listened to Get it up day b4 yesterday.
Don't wait for me is my jam.....
Don't wait for me is one of my favorite songs.
Love don't wait for me and gigolo!❤💯
1981, Indianapolis, I was 11 years old, Controversy Tour, my first live concert. Prince. The Time and Roger Troutman and Zapp. One of the greatest experiences of my life!
@nauticadon LOL! I had two older sisters who couldn't go unless they took me.
Freaking awesome
BIGGAV1 79 zapp?!! Nah, Fr? Fire
Bruh, that's legendary stuff in the music industry of all time.
Prince wasn't just a musical genius, his leadership are marketing abilities were second to his musical talent.
He possessed a rich intuition and courage that is rare in any artist, and music was only a medium for him to capture the irony of a revolution in progress.
As all great visionaries do, he worked tirelessly to incorporate as many people into the fold bringing forth amazing talent and iconoclastic expression.
You write like a journalist
Prince knew talent when he seen it. He never wanted them guys to get bigger than him. Jimmy & Terry was definitely going to succeed though. They was hot fresh out the gate!
Yes sir, Jimmy & Terry signed a production deal with Tabu before joining The Time. Working with Prince and later produced their first act The S.O.S. Band.
Well if he didn't want them to out do him yet, saw the talent....why bring them in in the first place???
Be real people!
PRINCE played ALL the instruments on their albums. They just played PRINCE'S music live. They learned their parts!
SMH!!!!
Morris is full of shit!!!
He's still disgruntled because of the requirements demanded of him while under their agreement!!!
He signed, he consented to it, he was made to honor his agreement!
So as far as anything else Morris is ALSO capitalizing on Prince's death!
Morris wouldn't even have a name if it weren't for Prince!
Wake up people!
None of these guys existed without Prince!
He brought them in BECAUSE of the talent not jealous or scared!!!
Try and take a look at hid. Odd of work AFTER All of them left!!!
The only people that went on to do anything really great but Jam and Lewis!
And Jam and Lewis didn't have a beef with Prince even to this day!
They gave him complete credit for everything they did to this day and before his death were in his vault working on music to release with him on his next album!
Eric Wilson czcams.com/video/EEfd5gzY8M8/video.html
“Prince knew talent when he saw it.”
CORRECTED.
Sorry, but Prince was not afraid of his own creation. He gave the Time some of his best material and surely expected them to be successful. Hopefully they are all grateful.
Morris is 63 years old 👀 old dude still has swag
504 Ryan Vido uncle from how to be a player. Facts.
Dam Morris Day was going to be a drummer. Alexander O'Neal the lead! Prince not wanting Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Prince throwing eggs at The Time but not wanting for them to do it to him. Morris has legendary stories
Yep, Prince & Alexander O'Neal didn't get along at all, reportedly saying that O'Neal was demanding upfront money and he was "Too Black" for the group SMH
I think Morris and the Time must have been confused as hell by Prince. On the one hand Prince made them tight as hell. He wanted them to succeed on some level. On the other hand, he pulls stunts like the eggs to sabotage them.
@@JunniorRooks that's really something! O'Neal turned out to be good as a solo artist
@@otakurocklee #Facts
It was rumor that Prince fired him for being "too black"

I didn't know Prince played every instrument until reading the credits for the Sign O the Times album. That inspired me to make music for which I fail miserably :)
He played all the instruments on the demo which got him signed to Warners - David Z recorded it, speaks about it here:
David Z (from 11:20)
- czcams.com/video/_7FVYX7tgy8/video.html
Warners even let Prince produce his first album because he auditioned on all the instruments - unheard of at the time.
Alexander O'Neal= Legendary
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis......= Legendary
So Morris Day doesn't rate?
@@on2wheels378 Morris Day doesn't come close to Alexander O'Neal

A Vlad interview hit different when it's a real musician sitting in front of the drum set.
I can trust MD speaking about Prince. No one else has ever made me feel comfortable. Miss you Purple Yoda.
I been waiting for this.... Hope Vlad asks the right questions
The condensate CD/DVD they talk about this and more from each ones perspective
Vlad is better than Wendy Williams. Her interview with Morris was awful.

That self titled LP with Get It Up and Cool is a classic! Prince definitely was a musical genius with that whole album.
Prince was something else
I love me some MD. Man.....i miss the 80's. The bs out today.....just stop.
I know😞
I Got 5 On It big Facts
I Got 5 on it, thank you!!! 99% of artists on the top 40 charts nowadays, are completely & totally overrated & absolutely fucking suck!! In all genres!! 80 music was leagues better, than bullshit like Lady Gaga, or fucking mumble rap!!
Things happened the way it was supposed to. Prince, Jam & Lewis, Alexander O'Neal, etc. All of them are the greatest!!!
I agree 100. Because of the way it happened we got to hear so much more great music. I mean a hell of a lot of great music!
This man is still beautiful
Lisa Richards lol
The Time, "Everybody walk your body..." . Us old school know that and "Cool" were the best songs.

Read Morris Day's Book it is so good! All these stories and more!
I read it 2 times and it feels like Morris still has harsh feelings although I love The Time.
Playing your own instruments and hitting the "percussion, guitar, horns" buttons on a keyboard are two different things. A True Artist.
When I see Morris Day I automatically start singing Gigolos get lonely too 🎶🎶🎶...and giiiirrrl I was a fool, don't know what to doooo still iiiinnn loooove wiiiith yooooou 🎶

Lol, he should totally ask Morris about that song!!
I have so much respect for Morris Day. He could've taken the money for that one song but got the record deal and became one of the the best frontmen of all time.
The deal was a better well, deal. Gettin the money is short term. The deal was long lasting. Smart move.
Wow didn’t know Jam and Lewis did Funkytown, I can definitely see that now with THE TIME’S musical production
No, they didn't do 'Funkytown' by Lipps Inc. They were in a previous band(Flyte Tyme) with Cynthia Johnson(Lead Vocalist of Lipps Inc).
