- Today, I will show you how I assembled the AMT Coca Cola Popper Pinto.
This was a fun build with only a few minor flaws that needed attention (Yours may vary). This kit can be built stock or custom. The body is painted with Folk Art Colorshift Black Flash craft paint.
I like to build these type of kits as a mixture of the two. As you will see, I built this mostly stock but with a twist.
I hope that you enjoy watching this video as much as I did building the kit.

Nice Job. The paint looks awesome!!!
Thank You! This build did fight me for a minute, but it did turn out fairly well.
Looks amazing.
Thank You!
Nice build,awesome 👍🏻
Thank You! This did turn out well all things considered. There was a lot of warp in this little kit.
Awesome!!!👍
Thank You! Another great AMT kit... That thing had more twists than a river, but with some perseverance I got it to look pretty good.
Nice job
Thank You!
Looks awesome despite the issues. You did an awesome job!
Thanks! This kit was a challenge to build.
New to your channel, you do really great work
Thank You and Welcome to the channel !
I just found - watch and enjoyed your video and had to mention that those are not part numbers - they are build sequence numbers. The number 1 in the star indicates the starting point.
I agree that those are sequence numbers. I was trying to point out that there weren't any part numbers on the trees like usual. I have been building for over forty years but just recently decided to do it with an audience. As you watch more of my videos you will see that I sometimes mis-speak about things, not intentionally but it does happen. This build was one of the first few videos on my channel and was still quite the newbie speaking on camera.
You did a good job. I'm building that now. It's driving me crazy. I chose to go pro street like I know how to do that. Well live and learn I guess. I'm just getting back in the hobby after 50 years away. I just subbed you
Thank you and Thanks for the Sub! Welcome back to the hobby. This kit was just a little bit of a pain to build because of the warped chassis and the windows that didn't want to fit. Good Luck with your build!
very nice! I'm about to start building mine today. I appreciate all the heads-ups you gave and seeing the superb result!
Thank You! I believe in being honest about the plus's and the minus's in each kit. Good luck on your build. Hope it doesn't have any warp or twist to contend with.
Another great build. I just finished this kit myself. I experienced the same fit issues that you mentioned. Fit issues aside, it’s a fun kit to build. I enjoyed your video and color choice!
Thank you! It was a fun kit to build. Can you believe that Round 2 recently re-popped this kit once again but with U.S. Mail decals? I can't help but wonder if they have corrected the problems with it.
Sweet build
Thank You! It did have some issues but I managed to at least get it to look somewhat correct.
I always thought it would be funny to build a pinto kit that the back is on fire. Lol
I remember seeing pictures of a Pinto that its owner painted backward flames on the rear end of the car. Funny but not funny all at the same time....
This comment gave me an idea for the back that involves cotton balls, paint, and a flickering battery-operated tea light.
Imma do that now
Looks pretty good. I just bought that kit today. Thanks for sharing.
Thank You! Good luck with your build. I hope that you don't experience the warp that I had to deal with. Thanks for watching!
I'm doing this one right now, those plastic axels don't fit the wheels too well, I used a metal one for the back end. But the front the engine seems to hang down too low with the axle through it. I'll work it out. But I didn't have some of the issues you did. Great job on yours despite it all.
Thank You! This wasn't the worst AMT kit that I have built but it ranks in the top 5. Let me know how your build turned out. You can share your story and pictures over at facebook.com/ScaleAutoGuy
@@scaleautoguysworkbench I agree. I got it done, engine still hangs low but oh well. My back window has the same gap, not the best kit I've built but that's how it goes.
nice i did this last year , i lowered the suspensión and add 4 wide tire , filler gray body color .
Thank You! This one did take a bit of patience.
The AMT Pinto kits were not the company's best work, even when they were new. I built my first one in "74. The depression in the C pillar was there from at least that period. The body and chassis were warped a bit. some of the kits were warped much worse. When the "Panera" kit came out around '77 ( the basis for your kit) none of the custom panels fit well out of the box. As you've discovered, the kits can be built to look well, but a bit of care and some filler and alterations go a long way.
Thanks for watching. I did do a little research on the origins of this kit after I built it and discovered like you mentioned that there was always a little warp or deformity in it. Round 2 just recently re-released this kit in the U.S. Mail livery and I'm sure that they haven't corrected its ailments. It just take a little patience and skill to overcome the issues to get a decent looking kit.
I really like the color you chose. Great build, brother.🤠👍
Thank you! I had just bought the entire line up of those Folk Art Colorshift paints I was experimenting with them a bit. This one is called Black Flash but really looks brown for some reason. I thought that it would look good on that car so I gave it a shot...
Really love that color too I'm gonna go snag sum
Love that color grabbing me sum asap
@@adammarsden2643 I found that paint in the craft section at Walmart. Good Luck!
On Fixing That Glass it's Basically 4 Step Process with Wet/Dry Sandpaper 320/220 with Dish soap then switch to 400 then 600. After that Polish with Maguire's Plasti-X headlight polish to restore Glass Clear It works !
Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely have to take another look into this to see if I can correct the problem.
Great build on what I consider a poor offering from AMT...
Like you I got mine from Hobby Lobby, and the warpage was so bad that I called Round2Models.
They agreed to send me a new kit. Time will tell...
Thank you! This one did have some issues. Luckily the warp was mostly concentrated on the chassis and I got most of the warp out. I thought that I got it all out until it was time to put the rear bumper on. Round 2 is a fairly reasonable company to deal with. Good luck with your build when it arrives!
How much time does it takes for someone noob yo build it?
Well, it can vary. Here is a small list of factors to consider in this equation.
1. Builders experience. As a Noob, you can expect to not be as fast as an experienced person. Take your time and take it step by step, don't rush it.
2. Flash, warp and fiddly parts can affect build time.
3. Paint drying time. Some paints dry faster than others and yes this can be sped up by using things like dehydrators and hair blow dryers.
4. Glue curing time. Much like paint, some glues cure faster than others.
I guess an average time, given all of the lost parts and mislabeled items, paint drying etc. I would say that a noob could complete this in a couple of days. I once built a complete box stock, no paint Challenger R/T start to finish in one day.
You are well on your way to becoming an experienced builder by watching this channel and others like it. A lot of guys will show problems and how to get around them so that you don't fall into the same traps. Good luck and enjoy this hobby!
Glad I didn't buy this kit when I saw it last Christmas. Very disappointed AMT would put out a kit with this much mis-fitting parts. No engine mounts is just criminal. The rear floor-pan issue and the crooked/tilted rear bumper mounting that resulted makes this a kit I will avoid. Was this kit a new purchase from a store, or did you buy it from second-hand eBay???
Edit: Right On Replicas, and Plastic Imagination Workshop, two other youtube channels who built this kit, didn't mention any rear floorpan warp or windshield glass fit issues that you had. They did report the custom version popper front end gaps issue had to be filled in, but that was not a problem when using the stock front grille assembly. One of those builders had to fix a twist in the rear hatch, to fit better.
This kit was recently purchased new from Hobby Lobby. The engine mount is facilitated by the insertion of the front axle. That is, unless you use the lowering pins, as I did. I just created my own mounts as you can see in the video. Lately, I have had a handful of warped kits from AMT. I don't know why that is exactly, but this kit, the 32 Ford kit and an upcoming 69 Ford kit have had problems with the chassis being warped. I don't know if others are having similar issues or not with these kits but the warp is easily corrected with the application of a little heat and positive pressure. If you want to buy and build this kit don't let a little warp get in your way. It just adds a little adventure to the build! Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@scaleautoguysworkbench that kit was specially issued for the custom version, and it should clearly have been taken into account using the lowering pins, not leave the motor to float in the opening. I was aware of your modification from watching the video, but I still say omitting the engine mount was criminal.
I plan to stop in at Round2 on a trip I will be making soon for another reason. I'll mention this to them, and the warping issue.
If you bought all those warped kits from the same store, you might want to start taking them back for refunds. Other builders on youtube are not having those issues; so your store may be warehousing product where there is excess heat.
@@rayrussell6258 I recently watched the September 2022 release video from Round 2. In that video they featured what appeared to be this same Pinto kit re-boxed in the U.S. Mail livery. Same car, different box and decals. Let's hope that the engine mount problems have been resolved in this rendition.
As far as where I bought the last few kits...
Well, I bought most of them at a few different Hobby Lobby stores in my region. (there are four different locations near me). That being said they are most likely being supplied by the same distribution center location. If any excessive heat situation has occurred it could have come from this point but I suspect that it may have happened during transport to the states in those hot cargo containers. They were stuck off the coast of California for months. Or, just maybe it happened straight from the manufacturer from the start. (Poor quality control, cheaper materials, poorly trained mold operators etc.)
I would think that if it were from excessive heat at the DC. or from the cargo container in transit, the entire kit would have suffered warp from the heat and not just specific parts in the kit. The body would possibly have experienced the same effect as the chassis has.
@@scaleautoguysworkbench top of a stack would have different warping than bottom of stack. Same for middle of stack, There is insulating effect, so no the entire kit wouldn't all get warped. Just where it was hottest.
Round2 better take some steps to investigate supply chain. Agree with you, hopefully the newer Pinto kit doesn't have this issue.
You did a great job on this but one bit of advice stop acting like hpi lazy shop
I was not aware that I was acting like him. Thanks for pointing that out to me as I was not aware.
You sound so tired of doing this..
I don't know exactly how to reply to this...
I was a little tired of fixing this mis-aligned, poorly engineered AMT kit. I was also glad to have it done. I often work on my kits late into the night/early morning hours. So, that may be what you were detecting?
Either way, I didn't think that I sounded tired as I try to remain as upbeat as I can while recording. Thank you for the view and the comment.
@@scaleautoguysworkbench Oh ok, love your videos by the way.
