- Today, I will show you how I build the AMT 1962 Pontiac Catalina 421 SD.
This kit was actually fun to build. It had a ton of detail built into it and I know that you will have fun building it too.
The exterior paint color is Folk Art Color Shift Raspberry Flash.
I hope that you enjoy watching this video!

I haven’t built a model in 60 years but as I watched you, I can actually smell the plastic aroma. Love this build. This is the era when the dealers papered the windows with moon shaped cuts to get people to pull over and look in. Thanks for sharing. May God Bless
Glad you enjoyed it! There's nothing quite like the smell of styrene when the box is first opened.
Beautiful work!...I have a particular liking to '62 Pontiacs...My dad had a '62 Bonneville, which was almost exactly like the Catalina...I never forgot that car.
Thank You! Sounds like good memories to have! My parents had a mixture of cars over the years mostly Chevy's, Chrysler's and a Ford.
Very nice. Models nice paint. 👌
Thank You!
Very! Nice!
Thank You!
Awesome color choice. Works well with this body style.
Thank You! I had my doubts when I first sprayed it but after I got the clear on it I really liked how it turned out. Thanks for watching!
Nice Catalina, the craft paint came out awesome.
Thank You!
Great video!! Looks like it would be a easy model to add opening doors, and trunk to. Really enjoyed the build. 🙂
Thank You! This kit does look like it could be modified like that. Thanks for watching!
Nice work, gonna do this one for sure, w/ slicks and a 9in rear end, thx
Good Luck on your build! Those slicks fit into the body really tight. Thanks for watching!
Very cool. Not a kit you see very often.🤠👍
Thanks 👍
Nice!!
Thanks!
Very nice 👍.Thanks for showing and best wishes from jolly old England 👍😎Pete 🤓
Thank you! and thank you for watching my channel!
I use a cake decorating tray as a turntable easy and cheap!!
I use one of those in my paint booth. Right after this video was done I went out and bought a motorized turntable and have been using it in every video since.
I'm building the Moebious Kit now :)
Is that the 1961 Catalina? The one with the yellow car on the box art? Seems like it will be a fun kit to build.
Great build and perfect color. Well done! 👍🏻
Thank You!
Great looking build of a really nice kit. Love the color. I have the "Polyglas" Gasser II version of this kit in my stash. I has 3 sets of tires and a complete custom interior along with all the stock parts. So, if you can't find this version, the one I have is a good alternative. The box is packed! Can't wait to start mine. just. a. few. more. in between! Thanks for sharing your talent with all of us.
Thank you for the kind words and thank you for the sub! This was a pretty fun build. The only thing that I didn't like about it was that the rear tires didn't fit into the body as well as they should have. The paint was a new color for me to try out and I really like it. Cheers!
Great video! (me thinks it's a #10 Xacto blade) 12:13
Yes, you are correct. I misspoke that it was a #11. I know that it is a #10 just made an oops. I have made this same mistake a couple of times for some unknown reason but I correct myself in editing in later videos.
Nice build. Thanks for sharing.
Thank You
That turned out beautiful! What did you thin the paint with?
For this build I was still using Model Master acrylic thinner. Since I have run out of that I am back to using distilled water. I've been thinking about trying the cheap windshield washer fluid that everybody has been saying that they have been using. Using distilled water does work but the drying times have increased slightly due to the absence of the small amount of alcohol in the blend.
Beautiful model just for a tip Pontiac never built a big block all their blocks are the same size
Thank you for the tip. I was unaware of the engine block sizes in this era. I grew up in a Mopar family.
What clear do you use over acrylic craft paint ? I am new and you may have covered that in the past. Thanks
Thanks for the great question. I just reviewed that video and I must apologize for not showing that information. I was having problems with camera's, camera angles and still learning the new editing software. I am always experimenting with different paints and clear coats with my builds just to see what I can do on a budget. On this particular build, I used Mod Podge acrylic gloss sealer. I bought it from the craft section at a local Walmart. The car had two coats of the Mod Podge applied and after it dried for about 36 hours I then applied a coat of Maquiar's Mirror Glaze.
nice workplace , better than mine 😅
Thank you! I have this oddly shaped corner in this room and I built this bench to fit the shape of the corner so that there wasn't any wasted space.
What do you thin the hobby paint with?
I have used a few different things to thin Acrylic Craft Paint. In the past I have used distilled water, Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic Thinner (No longer available), but for this particular kit I used Model Master Acrylic Paint Thinner.
Some manufacturers also make thinner for their specific paint as well. Take for instance, Createx Colors. They recommend using their 4011 Reducer to thin their products with.
Through conversations with others, I have been told that you can also use Denatured Alcohol and also the cheap, blue, windshield washer fluid. There are some "recipes", if you will, for making the "perfect" acrylic thinner that involve distilled water, Dawn dish soap and alcohol. Although I haven't tried any of these methods yet. Just be aware that each of these methods / products can affect the drying times of the paint.
Craft acrylics ? Really ? Lol
Yes, That is Folk Art Acrylic craft paint as I have shown at a few points in the video.
Nice build....well put together kit...i was surprised for AMT...makes me want to hunt one down now 😂
Thank you! This is an older AMT kit. That being said, not all AMT kits are horrible, just a few here and there. I haven't seen any of these available anywhere, then again I haven't been looking for one. I'm sure someone on Ebay may have one, but based on its age, the price may be lofty.
