2021 Yamaha MT-09 SP | Changes to make it look PERFECT (fixed that headlight)

  • The 2021 MT-09, especially in SP form, is very near the perfect road bike. The electronic package is top-notch (IMU-based lean-sensitive traction control and cornering ABS is now standard; cruise control, riding modes, anti-wheelie and so on); the chassis is heavily revised, having now more weight on the front, and also more lateral rigidity, giving it much more sure-footed cornering capabilities. The throttle response was also improved, eliminating the on-off nature of the previous iterations. It COULD be perfect...
Only one thing remains that makes it less than perfect: that absurdly high-perched headlight. I fixed that. You're welcome.
Also, pointer puppies at the end. Because it's thematic and because who doesn't love pointer puppies...

I really don't mind the new single LED light looking so much less prominent and smaller... as long as it works well.
How it rides, sounds, stops and goes is far more important to me.. and the 21 model is improved and certainly not lacking in any of these areas.
This kind of styling is probably going to become a lot more common as these much more compact LED lights become the norm across the model ranges, It's just going to take a bit of getting used to.

I own a new 09 SP and in person bike looks great, like 100 miles better than on pictures and videos. Only thing that are ugly is that horn and plate holder. Unfortunately, horn position is due to eu regulation so you don’t have legal options to move it elsewhere.

I know that Yamaha says the horn placememt is due to EU regs, but other manufacturers find better places to put their horns and I'm sure they're not disrespecting EU regs, so there's wiggle room there.

To be honest, a lot of stuff coming out of Japan in the last 10 years is really wildly over-styled and insectizoid. The good looking years were early 2000's. I used to have a 2011 FZ1. That quarter fairing with the dual H4 beams out front looked so much better. If Yamaha wanted to do something with LED projectors, why not hearken back to about 2005 YZF-R1 with that face? Even the 2017-2020 MT-09 had a slightly better face.
I guess if the LED illuminates the night better (supposedly has good technology baked in), I can live with that. Everything else is SO much improved.

Where as my friend's 2017 MT09 stock headlights are so bright, that I have to ask him repeatedly if he has his brights on. We let him lead at night in unlit curvy hill-country roads because he has above average OEM illumination.
Yamaha is guilty of cutting cost by going with 1 LED lamp, among many other things. Those who think differently are inexperienced.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket Před 2 lety

@@maldridge7630 Agreed. There's precious few bikes made in the last 20 years that had great (not merely good, or tolerable) nighttime illumination, even at lean. It's a sore spot, ridiculous, very tiring, unacceptable, and borderline illegal in my opinion to put out bikes that do such a rotten job at night illumination. These days with LED, precision lenses, reflectors, IMU, servo motors, tons of onboard computing power, an automotive industry that's installing reflected lasers for headlight power, it's just unacceptable to cost-cut on this feature. Why not borrow from automotive manufacturers at volume to keep cost lower?

The XSR900 looks better ....a bit pricer but you DO get a longer swingarm for stability AND it comes with cruise control! both items easily worth the 500 or so extra dollars AND Yamaha Japan is offerning a color matched CAFE FAIRING for the XSR900 basically same motorcycle as MT09 just more stable nicer headlight .....good luck finding one for some reason. Lowering the handlebars doesn't change the weight distribution that much - certainly a lot less than sliding the forks up the triple clamps. But if weight balance is a concern you can always compensate the lower handlebar position by sliding the forks slightly down. In the MT-09 case, though, "too much weight over the front" is *definitely* not an issue - Yamaha improved the chassis and suspension setup with this 2021 model, but it still rides a bit like a supermoto.

Can’t disagree; the MT-09 is butt ugly - any suggestions to beatify the beast would be an improvement to the world of right-thinking motorcyclists.

I almost feel like Yamaha is trolling us, seeing who is dumb enough to buy a bike that plastic-ugly in the front.

Honestly, I don't GAF what it looks like... I want it for it's performance and riding position... Just about every Japanese bike is plastic in the front.

Good for you, mate! Most of us like to own good looking bikes - this video is for that large majority.

Please send this to Yamaha headquarters before they defile another MT. They even made the 10 look like a damn Triumph. Disgusting.
