Check Engine Light On? VSC? TC? Why Drivers Need To Have An OBD2 Scanner/Reader In Their Car

  • I see people asking about when they get a CEL on their Toyota, and they also get a TC and VSC light and that adds some confusion to the mix. Just to set things straight, on a Toyota, when a CEL is triggered the VSC/TC lights always comes on if the car is equipped with these safety systems.
I highly suggest that everyone has some type of OBD2 reader that can scan and clear the codes. These are a life saver. They allow you to scan the code and if you don't know what the code is you can Google it to see what is going on.

My technician suggested replacing the gas cap as a starting point for my problem, but other potential causes include the gas pump, canister, oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, and more. I replaced the gas cap, but the issue persisted. The lights turn on and off and then abruptly reappear. My driving has not changed; everything goes without a hitch. This code used to appear like a decade ago as soon as I installed my air intake, header, and manifold; it would then reset twice and go. However, it has returned. I imagine that turbo charging an engine intended for a supercharger as a maximum power displacement, would take its toll, which is why you're seeing these errors but because your meticulous maintenance routine will take a while until they catch up. This time, I'm heading to TCCN in Chicago with my car to take care of it and any other necessary maintenance.

Mine goes off simply because it's a performance CAT that warms up at a slightly different rate than the OEM CAT does. This will trigger a code when the ECU doesn't like it but it's not a big deal as it doesn't happen very often. I can clear it on the go as I showed in the video. I have a permanent fix for it but I just have to install it. It doesn't have anything to do with the car being turbocharged, only that the CAT is a performance CAT that reacts a little differently.
I'm sure that AMD will be able to figure out what is going on and why you keep getting a CEL. Sometimes it can be the smallest of things. I would love to make it out to his shop some day in Chicago and meet him. I enjoy his channel a lot and he has a lot of knowledge that he shares with us all.

@@jimsgaragetoys Hi. wondering what your personal fix is? Having this same issue on a 05 Highlander Base model. replaced the gas cap to see if it would fix it and it didn't.

@@kl8455 The first issue is knowing what is causing the CEL. In my case the performance CAT warms up at a different rate than the OEM CAT did so it confuses the ECU and sometimes it will through a CEL. The code is alway P0420. I bought an extension tube for the rear O2 sensor that will recess the sensor and eliminate the CEL going off. What is your code that you are getting when you scanned it?
