  • BACON BIG BOYS! - Vintage Cookbook Review and Recipes
Today I'm reviewing Cooking for Two, a Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook published in 1968. I'm also cooking up one of the party sandwich recipes from this collection - Bacon Big Boys.
I'm cooking through history and you're invited! Follow along with me as I prepare a recipe from one of my many vintage cookbooks. Will the results be delicious, or disastrous? There's only one way to find out. Thanks for checking out my midcentury cooking video and joining me in my vintage cooking corner.
    BACON BIG BOYS
    2 large French rolls
    Prepared mustard
    4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
    4 frankfurters
    6 to 8 slices bacon
Split rolls. Spread inside of tops with mustard. Arrange 2 cheese slices and 2 frankfurters on bottom half of each. Replace tops. Wrap 3 or 4 bacon slices spiral fashion around each; secure with picks. Place, top down, on oven rack in shallow pan. Bake at 400 for 5 to 8 minutes. Turn, back 5 to 8 minutes more.

This book was a bride gift at the dept store where I registered my wedding gift registry in 1977. I cooked my way backwards and forwards through this book. I still have it and am using it occasionally now that we are empty nesters.
The beef stew is good, even though the base is tomato soup. I add sliced mushrooms to the stew and serve with a green salad buttered and crusty French bread.
BTW that chocolate cake IS good.

Yes. Bride and groom are the "Two" eating together in the old days. My Mom made 8 servings for dinner as a newlywed since she cooked for a big family as a girl. Dad enjoyed it and gained weight in marriage after leaving military service. Happily married 65 years!!

Reminisce magazine used to have a monthly section of recipes devoted to "Cooking for Two". Is that magazine still around? Nursing home residents I knew in the 80s subscribed.

Maybe cook them on a rack, that fits in your cookie sheet, for more even baking and to prevent soggy bottoms?

Your now famous Bacon Big Boys were a little harder to assemble than thought, but they were good. The original heating times were correct in a regular oven, top rack close to the heating element. Only took an extra 5 minutes on one of the sides to get the crispy surface. As a guy, I like easy and delicious. This fit the bill. 😋

My Mom used to make something similar to this. It was a hot dog bun, opened up flat, with baked beans spread across, a hot dog split in half and layered on top , and a slice of cheese on top of that. She baked them to melt the cheese. My brother and I loved them

Off to the grocery store to get some Bacon Big Boy fixings and some other 60’s sandwiches ingredients 😂 thank you!

The recipe you were wondering about was called, pigs in a blanket. My mom would use Pillsbury crescent rolls to wrap around the hot dogs, she would slit the hot dog lengthwise and put a slice of cheese in the hot dogs, the wrap them in crescent rolls.
Grew up with crescent roll hot dogs at birthday parties, great memories.
Definitely will be making this recipe! My son and my grandson would love this recipe!

I see you have Aldi cheese, and something that may help with the crisping is using their Appleton Farms pre-cooked bacon. It's very thin, but it crisps wonderfully in a skillet, and the thinness may crisp better during baking. Even if it doesn't, it's pre-cooked and safe to eat, and frankly, AF makes delicious bacon and hams. I think this is the same cookbook that I found Beef With Wine in (I renamed it Beef au Vin when I made my recipe card, so it may not be that exactly.) It's basically baked burger patties with a red wine sauce, but it was so good. I really need to make that again.

Now we can buy 1/4 pound hotdogs, but in the 60s and 70s, there were only 8 per one pound package (2 ounce dogs). So you would just buy the quarter pound hotdogs today.
