    Chris Goffey presents a history of TATRA from the Type 87.
    Hans Ledwinka (1878-1967)
    Tatra is the third oldest car maker in the world after Daimler Mercedes-Benz and Peugeot, producing the first motor car in central Europe in 1897.
    Production of Tatra cars ceased in 1999 but the company still produces a range of primarily all-wheel-drive trucks.

    I remember Tim Bishop from when he worked for Rover. An intensely enthusiastic engineer, he would often turn up at work driving a car from his collection of European microcars. At other times he came in his Tatra T603, and one day he took me out to lunch in it, where he impressed me by hustling it around the country lanes near Gaydon with aplomb. Happy days!

    It's damn unforgivable that the Tatra ended up on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain. Had that not happened, we'd probably be driving Tatras, rather than Volkswagens. Either that, or the Tatra would be available for those who like Mercedes-Benz and/or BMW but want something with the rear mounted engine. :)

    In fact, design of T613 was obsolete in 1993, because original production started in 1975. Before all facelifts and plastics, it was a chromed queen with many edges and shapes, which granted much more lightness than after later facelifts.

    Well I beg to disagree. The first series 613 was in time of its designing (1968/69) quite modern. Of course, the russian invasion of 68 did not speed things up. Neither did "planed" supply industry as well as limiting factory output by communist party. Also the production started in 73, car was obsolete by 83, but they made the damn thing till 96. With all that said, Tatra is for me still one of those unusual brands, ones like Saab and Lancia.

    They were coach builders, later started with carriages for both army and civil sector. The first car they built was Präsident in 1892. With its two stroke engine from Benz it was coach with engine. They built the car to explore future potential of petrol powerd vehicles. To prove this concept they drove the car to Wien ( 328 km in 24,5 hour :) They built few one-offs all technicaly related to this first one. The company was making those various one offs until Ledwinka came in with NW U /T 10.

    No. That guy Tim Bishop was actually an engineering consultant given the job of developing the fuel injection system to meet emissions regs in the uk which he did...and never got paid for the work by Tatra who were in a bad place financially. they simply couldn't afford to develop it enough to be saleable here, set up a dealer network etc. Under communism they had a captive market and did not have to worry much about consumer acceptability.

  • @_chan.burn.21_
    @_chan.burn.21_ Před 7 lety

    Honestly, the Tatra Type 87 seems like it more inspired the Tucker Torpedo, either that or it's just a really odd coincidence that both of their designs & concept are strikingly similar. The VW Beetle was more designed to be cheap, basic transportation for everyone, while the Tartra was designed more on the luxurious and technologically advanced side of the spectrum. So to me, comparing the Volkswagen to the Tatra is like comparing apples and oranges, although it is apparent Ferdinand Porsche did take inspiration from that car.

    Ledwinka was a great designer, but actually, the idea of streamlined cars was not his. It was Erich Übelacker who convinced Ledwinka about the benefits of the aerodynamic design. Moreover, an Austrian Béla Barényi visited in Tatra in 1931 presenting his idea of a rear engined, streamlined people's car with a transaxle and central load carrying pipe.
    Tatra was not the first serial produced aerodynamic car. It was Rumpler Tropfenwagen in 1921.

      Indeed, because the origin of this T613 comes back to 1973, when the prototype was built and since then, nothing was done to the car, so when in 1990 they thought about exporting it to the west, they found the T613 is worse equipped that the Skoda Favorit, since the T613 didn't have mirrors adjustable from the inside. As a luxury limousine, it had nothing like aircon, ABS, airbag or central locking and electrical windows. It consumed about 15l of fuel every 100km and had to have a special diesel heating since it was aircooled. So to turn this old T613 into at least what is seen in this video made it so expensive.
