I noticed she desperately wanted it to be Jerusalem or Bethlehem...ha! I'm guessing it is really either Lebanon or Syria. What surprised me is that she got the Sierra Leone result. We all have African ancestors, but since these dna tests only go back about 500 years, it means her black ancestor was more recent...which means the white supremacists won't be happy about it...lol. In fact the Baltic countries and Russia don't really get a long so well since the Russians came in after WWII and then killed or shipped in boxcars and made flee hundreds of thousands of Baltic people and stole their homes, belongings and property.
It is a bit shocking that people supposed to be delivering news on world affairs, especially with everyone going on these days with Putin, don't know this basic stuff still.

In fairness there is not one country in Europe let alone the world that doesn't have baggage within its history. Whilst you rightly mention the horrible actions of the Soviet Union after WW2, you've left out that people within them countries happily worked under Communism and before WW2 parts of the Balkans actually sided with Hitler like Croatia for example or the many people who under occupation happily first worked with the Nazi's and afterwards with the Soviets. Its ironic that at one time many in the Balkans saw the Soviets as liberators with the dislike coming afterwards especially in the modern era with the rise of many Nationalistic far right political party's especially in the ex Communist countries of Eastern Europe.

Really just bc someone has an indigenous Native American, African or whatever ancestor does not mean they are Native American, African or other ethnicity. It just means they had an ancestor that was & they received some of their DNA in some way. What ancestry a person is 'mostly' is mostly what they are. We don't inherit all our ancestors DNA. Our DNA contains a record of our ancestors but the mix of DNA we inherit is unique to each of us. We receive 50% of our DNA from each parent, who received 50% of theirs from each parent, & so on...The amount of DNA we receive from a particular ancestor decreases over generations. Go back far enough, there's a chance you inherited no DNA from a particular ancestor. Genetic inheritance is random & siblings inherit different DNA.

Fingers crossed. I know these tests do point you in direction of family members since I do genealogy. Plus had a sister and brother do the test, reason, just because you are sister and brother your dna will match enough to know you are siblings, but each one of us may show additional heritage, in my case I showed no jewish blood, but it showed my sister's and brother's test. Plus we can't find out where a line of family came from they just show up in Virginia in the 1700's, folklore says from the Mediterranean, which might be since all our dna shows the caucaus region......never do dna or genealogy unless you are ready for surprises.........

Many Greeks and Italians are dark because of the Arab expansion into their lands not the other way around. For centuries, Vikings kidnapped and sold Slavic women as concubines and sex slaves to the Arab upper classes in the Middle east. As the Islamic empires expanded into the Balkans, the demand for Slavic women for harems became so great that it is reported that whole villages were left bereft women of child bearing age. This influx of Slavic genes is now dominant in the Gulf upper and middle classes. however the majority of the gulf peasantry does not share these traits. A 7 year long mandatory education became the norm in Norway from the 1890's and I can guarantee that the same was true for Sweden. Even before that, most people recieved some sort of education in reading along with their Christian confirmation education. The immigrant officials who recieved them on Ellis Island back in the time were known to anglicize their names because they were foreign and difficult though, and that's likely the explanation for the difference in spelling.

This would make them functionally illiterate in the united states.

Roger Quarton does it show like the specifics of Balkan? Like Serbian Albanian Bosnian etc?

    • @Quarton

No, it only gives "Balkan". I would be interested in knowing more specifically which it is! :-) I'm going to ask if there would be any way of knowing.

itsameAlex, I would think it would list Greek as "Greek" - not lumped in with "Italian". I also don't think it is included with the term "Balkan". It's interesting! (I will be contacting MyHeritage.com about that.) The inclusion of Balkan in my DNA test was a surprise, since almost all of my family has come to the U.S. in the 1609 to 1799 time frame.

I don't know how they specify Irish in particular in the USA when geneticists in Europe say the Irish, Welsh and Scots are too genetically close to distinguish from each other.

My AncestryDNA didn’t distinguish between them until about two or three months ago. 25% English, 19% Scot, 14% Welsh and 6% Irish. The rest of me is 32% Scandinavian with 4% German.
