I took a DNA test last January with AncestryDNA because I too was interested about my ancestors. The thing about Ancestry DNA is they connect you with relatives you match with. My mother never knew who her father was, well, my DNA results matched me with a woman that turned out to be my aunt, we connected and the history all fit too well because her father was US Military stationed in Germany. My mother and my newfound aunt started chatting as well, then my mom took a DNA test as well and it connected the both of them as sisters. Last month my family got together and met our new long-lost family. Now I got new uncles, a new aunt, and some new cousins.

Echo, I love your light-hearted reflection on your DNA findings. My great-maternal grandfather was an orphan, according to family reports. They talked about the 'orphan train's of the 1800s, in which the hungry, impoverished eastern U.S. families would put their children on board trains. Farm families along the train routes would check these little children out and adopt the ones that looked healthy enough to pitch in with the farm work.

My mother in law never knew who her father was and was recently able to connect with a sister she didn't know she had and find out about her father who is dead all because she took a DNA test. I don't know how all of them work, but the company she used allows you to connect with people who have similar DNA as you for the purpose of family history. So cool! There is a group called DNA Detectives that helps people search for relatives. You take those ancestry matches and go through family trees to find family members.
They have helped many adoptees, foundlings and people who don't know who one parent was connect with family. I have seen foundlings get connected with siblings when they had only 5th cousin links.
I am hoping to do the test myself soon and hoping I get some good matches as I know I have a sister but don't know who she is or anything about her. A relative just decided to tell me I have a sister and no other information back in 1997. Hopefully if I find her she is open to connection.

We knew that the people in the area are all distantly related, and that a thousand years ago his ancestors were supposed to be Vikings or Danish. The Cumbrian dialect is about one third Norse and two thirds English/Lowland Scottish .When we did his DNA it came out as 59% Norwegian, 22% Swedish 18% Scottish and 1% English, from his G.G.grandmother who came from Lancashire. All his ancestors come from Carlisle,Bewcastle or Liddesdale in Roxburgh in Scotland .My own DNA comes out as 62% Welsh, 20% English and 18% German.-from my Great Grand-father. The percentages do not exactly correspond to what I have found out doing family history, so we may get more from one ancestor and less from another
