Robin Friday was a footballer like no other. A man whose talent for football was only eclipsed by his enthusiasm for high-jinx away from the game. Or, at least he apparently was. All we have to rely on is a collection of stories, the last brilliant footballer who really only exists as an oral history. If they were true, he really was the greatest footballer you never saw - but who knows if they were. He was less a player, more a myth, a collection of tales told by people who want to believe them.

Was privileged to see him play loads of times. He really was mercurial, a great player, but a flawed genius. In the modern game he would have had people to look after him, but the 70's were different.

@@miked2075 is really hard to say how good he really was. He never played against the very top players although he was clearly too good for the Reading team of the time. He had fantastic ball control and skill to burn, but his downfall was he was a drug taker and drinker and that really held him back from really fulfilling his potential.
He was a problem for managers as he rebelled against all discipline.

Thank you, a really well produced and narrated video. There are a few factual inaccuracies though: Robin played in the old 2nd Division now called the Championship. He was at Cardiff City for 1 year from Jan 1977 to Dec 1977. He didn’t crap in Mark Lawrenson’s kit bag after the Brighton game. Lawrenson confirmed this in an interview at the end of 2018. However, Robin did crap in Mansfield’s team bath after some particularly rough treatment in a game which resulted in him having to leave the pitch injured. That game was in November 1976 in the old 3rd Division now League One.

Hello Rajarshi, thanks for your comment. I can understand a lack of interest in the tactics of a club you don't watch, but I think it's a little bit odd to leave a comment like this on this particular video. Robin Friday has a fascinating story, and whilst it might be obscure, that doesn't make it any less interesting to us.
You describe it as "hipsterish", but for me, being a "hipster" or doing something "hipsterish" implies a lack of authenticity or a suggestion that something is done for effect. For us, I can categorically say that that is not the case. Personally, I find the story of Robin Friday very interesting, and *not* ironically.
Of course, you are free to decide what you like and what you're less interested in, but with regards to the more obscure topics, our intentions are entirely pure, and solely based in what interests us.

@@rajarshibanduri1315 Robin Friday is a legend. His story is obscure only if you think football was invented in 1992.

I like most of your content but don't understand why you have sometimes choose to put your effort behind these overly obscure players or clubs. It seems a bit too hispterish. I prefer when you stick to excellently analysing the things which others tend to overlook.

We like to cover every corner of football. It's fun for us. And we have to make sure it's fun otherwise what is the point! - Danny

+uMAXit Football then continue if it's fun for you. Do a video about this idea that sometimes teams start to put in a better performance after going one man down. Do a statistical analysis if possible of how many have gone on to one after having a numerical disadvantage and actually being motivated to put in a better performance. PSg Chelsea comes to mind from recent times after Ibrahimovic being red carded.
