Robin Friday was a footballer like no other. A man whose talent for football was only eclipsed by his enthusiasm for high-jinx away from the game. Or, at least he apparently was. All we have to rely on is a collection of stories, the last brilliant footballer who really only exists as an oral history. If they were true, he really was the greatest footballer you never saw - but who knows if they were. He was less a player, more a myth, a collection of tales told by people who want to believe them.

Was privileged to see him play loads of times. He really was mercurial, a great player, but a flawed genius. In the modern game he would have had people to look after him, but the 70's were different.
I find his story so fascinating. How good was he? Was he comparable to Totti? Comparable to Laudrup? Romario? I have to know.
@@miked2075 is really hard to say how good he really was. He never played against the very top players although he was clearly too good for the Reading team of the time. He had fantastic ball control and skill to burn, but his downfall was he was a drug taker and drinker and that really held him back from really fulfilling his potential.
He was a problem for managers as he rebelled against all discipline.
David Batley thanks for shedding some light. His story is both sad and interesting.
Saw him play v Northampton in 1974 in a 3-3 draw. He really was a lower league George Best.
@@chrismith251I was at that game too, Robin signed autographs outside the Spion Kop. Very friendly, laid-back bloke to the fans.
The 70s in Britain were notorious for workers going on spike
Hahahahahahahahha
Sounds possessed by a demon.
God i love your voice. It's like a masterpiece listening to it in the morning and the fact that it's about football makes it a 1000× better
He ain't gon fuck ya
Calm down ducky... 🤡😂
People with nice voices tend to be disappointingly funny looking in real life 😊
He played for Cardiff in what now be THe Championship. I like the tale of him walking into a hotel with a swan under his arm, which he had aquired from the nearby lake.
Missed the story where he plays tripping on acid but this was great. The book about Robin Friday is a wonderful read.
brilliant! I had no idea there was ever such a hidden football legend.
We're glad you've now discovered him :) - Danny

can someone link me some of his highlights?
@@66kaisersoza 🍎🏇🎞
well, the pub would have been the boars head, i saw him in there wearing "that" fur coat. also at a Hawkwind gig at Readings top rank. always approachable , always friendly , it was a privelige to have seen him play so many times.
Possible to say one of the most famous stills in football, in that iconic Cardiff strip and flicking the V sign. I was there at at Ninian that day. Friday was superb.
Walked into a pub in Reading on a Saturday night carrying a swan, that he'd caught next to the Thames.
@@chrisl9620, ironic after playing for the Bluebirds to carry a swan.
@@steaks652 ......cut my right arm off to see him play again.
@@chrisl9620 , we are on the same page Chris, he was a maverick player, capable of turning a game with a piece of magic, unplayable and always entertaining, what a crying shame the way it turned out for him , my mate roomed with him at Ccfc and told me some stories which will remain private. Legend mate.
@@steaks652 ....he actually kipped on my late father in laws sofa on a number of occasions whilst at Reading. Wish his goal of the century against Tranmere in a 5 nil win was on vt somewhere. I was there that night. Referee Clive Thomas stood there with his hands on his head. A player 30 years ahead of time.
He took rebirth as Ravel Morrison.
Anirudh Srikanth 😂😂
😂😂😂
Friday, I'm in love.
Wow... only took him 3 years to be a Club Legend. 👏
A cult hero! - Danny
@@Tifo ......at two clubs. Cardiff & Reading.
The old football divisions gained a mythos of their own. The stories my Grandad told me makes me jealous he lived through that era.
Saw him play for the Bluebirds and I remember the V well. The following season I met him outside Orient's ground, he left the game at that stage. I had a quick chat with him. Such a wasted talent.
at 0:42 you incorrectly state that he never played higher than Division Three.... in 1976-77 Robin played for Cardiff City in Division Two, when they finished 18th in the table.
Just to add (and I was there) re the goal against Tranmere, when he took the ball on his chest HE WAS FACING AWAY FROM GOAL. He chested it off to his left, pivoted 180 degrees and struck the ball with his right foot.
Spiked the drink at his wedding. Class.
Thank you, a really well produced and narrated video. There are a few factual inaccuracies though: Robin played in the old 2nd Division now called the Championship. He was at Cardiff City for 1 year from Jan 1977 to Dec 1977. He didn’t crap in Mark Lawrenson’s kit bag after the Brighton game. Lawrenson confirmed this in an interview at the end of 2018. However, Robin did crap in Mansfield’s team bath after some particularly rough treatment in a game which resulted in him having to leave the pitch injured. That game was in November 1976 in the old 3rd Division now League One.
This is hollywood material, someone should definitely make a movie about him, i also hope that these tails would turn up to be true
seems like a christian bale role
felix winchester Yea that dude can pretty much nail any role
There is a film on the way about him, called "Friday"
"DONT JUST STARE AT THE GRASS, EAT IT " - Christian Bale as Robin Friday
tiagovalen Comment of the year XD
You made my day what a hilarious reference!
Spoke to an old Reading fan about him. He said he was quite simply the best. Should've played at the highest level
Fantastic that you've covered Robin Friday, it's a crying shame no one outside either Cardiff or Reading really know anything about him.
It'd be interesting to see other relatively unknown cult figures covered as they give so much character to different eras in the game.
I read his story in _FourFourTwo_ many years ago. The author titled it _"The Greatest Footballer You Never Saw"_
why do I remember balotelli?
Remember playing Bournemouth at Elm Park. Stuart Morgen kept sything Friday down from behind. In the second half he had had enough. After one tackle from behind, they got up and Friday chinned him. Put Morgan flat on his back. Friday walked straight off before the ref could send him off. He then he allegedly went into the Bournemouth dressing room and had a dump in the plunge bath .
I met RF outside Leyton Orient's ground sometime after he left the Bluebirds. I was impressed that he took time out to see CCFC.
Thats was my grandad! My mum is Nicola friday
He js just straight up badass rockstar footballer.
still the most exciting talented player ive seen
Early. He sounds like Barton+Best+Pele
EnderGaming he sounds like messi & ronaldo
What on earth is Barton doing in the same sentence as Best and Pele!
Wow BritPop flashback right when / where you least expect it...Hewitt wrote about Friday with the original bass player for Oasis (Guigsy) after Hewitt wrote the book "Getting High" about the Gallaghers
Robin Friday I'm in love
I remember him hiding in the toilet from reading to Cardiff before a game and im glad to say I seen him play football true legend 🙌
This man took drug abuse to another level : - Wikipedia :
He served a prison sentence during the 1980s for impersonating a police officer and confiscating people's drugs,
You couldn't make this up. The Wiki biog is hilarious. Makes George Best look like a lightweight.
@@geoffpoole483 Thanks so much for your comment, you made me laugh so much, I loved it (and it was at a moment when I needed a good laugh)
Thank you so much, he was one of my late fathers favourite players. A true talent on the pitch...and a bit of a handful off.
No problem Mark - Danny
Man he did live like a rockstar
Thanks for this video as a Cardiff fan and as a Super Furry Animals fan too.
A lot of the real old timer Reading supporters rated Friday as highly as George Best.
matthew coombs He was 25 years ahead of his time...his balance and technique were streets ahead of anything I had ever seeñ on match of the day as a kid.
Only Reading supporters did but not football supporters elsewhere .
Nice one.
love it

My dad watched reading through the 70s from what I heard growing up he most certainly as good as they say
Remainds me of Magico Gonzalez. Salvadoran who played for Cadiz FC and 1 Pre season with BarçaFC
Interesting connection and a valid point. But very few English fans would know who Magico is, unfortunately...
wow someone made a video on a reading player for their time at reading and not just to mock the fact that alfie has the 3rd best goals to minutes ratio in the prem.
What an underrated urban legend
Reminds me a bit of a footballing GG Allin.
Yes
He took a shit in Lawrenson's bag?!?!! "I'm not that bothered Gary."
There is footage of Friday, just not much. Also I think Cardiff were in the old Division 2 (so second tier) when he played for them.
Recall the interviewer when he signed for Cardiff saying " why did you sign for Cardiff "?
Friday replied, " they were the only one's in for me".
Classic Robin Friday comment.
wich software do you use to make these videos?
Could you guys do the same for Osie Kofi and/or Roger Milla?
"he avoided paying rail fares by knocking on locked toilet doors and shouting, "Tickets, please!", pretending to be the ticket inspector. When the occupant passed his ticket under the door to be checked, Friday would pick it up, walk off and use it for himself."

I have a drawing of him flicking the Vs on my wall
Didn't he stop playing at a young age something like 25-27 or is that someone completely different

He was 25 when he packed it in
make one about paul gascoigne people have been talking like hes top 5 ever if he stayed fit or whatever...
He once walked into a pub naked with a swan in his hand true maverick
I hope that's true - Danny
what a legend. more footballers today need to be like this guy.
They need to ruin their careers by being addicts?
What a prick
Ever heard about Magico Gonzales?
There's a film being made about him
I guess Gazza could only dream of being him (off the pitch anyway)

#uMAXitgiveaway1 Only been watching since Christmas time, but almost every video has been watched☺️ I'm a Bolton fan and I am pleased to let you guys know that, financially, we are back on the mend and a lot has changed since the video about the club was uploaded... I ❤️ football.
I have been to reading and there isn't that many people there
weird to think he was my uncle
BISCUITMEN
Myth no 1 . He was a hero at two clubs.Let me tell you as lifelong Cardiff fan he came and went with not much of a bang as far as most of us were concerned. From what I saw, vastly overated,3rd or 4th division and but for his supposed antics would never have been heard of for his football. Yes there was the odd moment of brilliance bit a lot of medeocrity in bettween.Unlike Worthington ,Bowells and Best he sound the most unlovable of rouges
so, write about Lord Bendtner then.

Your pronunciation of the word 'status' disquiets me.
Still waiting for an African team to be analyzed here.
They're shit.
Combat Enthusiast So? Since when is being good a prerequisite for being in a video?
Which African team has a story worth telling?
Zamalek? Esperance? Raja? Hearts of Oak? Mamelodi Sundowns? Tout Puissant Mazembe?
A more interesting video would be why the corruption in each African team and league holds them back.
i hope reading stay in the lower leagues for ever

I like most of your content but don't understand why you have sometimes choose to put your effort behind these overly obscure players or clubs. It seems a bit too hispterish. I prefer when you stick to excellently analysing the things which others tend to overlook.
Hello Rajarshi, thanks for your comment. I can understand a lack of interest in the tactics of a club you don't watch, but I think it's a little bit odd to leave a comment like this on this particular video. Robin Friday has a fascinating story, and whilst it might be obscure, that doesn't make it any less interesting to us.
You describe it as "hipsterish", but for me, being a "hipster" or doing something "hipsterish" implies a lack of authenticity or a suggestion that something is done for effect. For us, I can categorically say that that is not the case. Personally, I find the story of Robin Friday very interesting, and *not* ironically.
Of course, you are free to decide what you like and what you're less interested in, but with regards to the more obscure topics, our intentions are entirely pure, and solely based in what interests us.
- Joe
+uMAXit Football yeah I got it its amusing for you guys. You had fun doing it.
@@rajarshibanduri1315 Robin Friday is a legend. His story is obscure only if you think football was invented in 1992.
I like most of your content but don't understand why you have sometimes choose to put your effort behind these overly obscure players or clubs. It seems a bit too hispterish. I prefer when you stick to excellently analysing the things which others tend to overlook.
We like to cover every corner of football. It's fun for us. And we have to make sure it's fun otherwise what is the point! - Danny
+uMAXit Football then continue if it's fun for you. Do a video about this idea that sometimes teams start to put in a better performance after going one man down. Do a statistical analysis if possible of how many have gone on to one after having a numerical disadvantage and actually being motivated to put in a better performance. PSg Chelsea comes to mind from recent times after Ibrahimovic being red carded.
