- Nong Khai is just across the river from Laos and makes a pleasant stay if you are headed there from Thailand.

The room looked very very very comfortable. YES. And that bathroom was very very spacious, and looked very very efficient. YES. Ok. And loveley loveley lady at reception. She looked very very helpful.
Some strange reason as. I read that I had Eddie's voice in my head.
I did the 11 baht train from Udon Thani to Nong Kai. Great Experience.
Oh man, that sounds like an infinitely better option that the mini-coffin that Eddy chose. When will that guy ever learn?
@@jimmccann3856did they charge extra for luggage on the train??
I've got 2 medium size back packs,
Putting us all to sleep Zzzzzz
I got the train from Udon Thani to Nong Khai last April. It takes 40 minutes each way and costs only 11 Baht Return.
Are there shared taxi's or buses from train station into town??
Tuk tuk costs too much
The Pikul Apartment Hotel i stayed there last year its an ok place . Very helpful staff . Great vlog Eddie mate. I am looking forward to your vlogs from Laos
Thanks, Wayne
You can rent a small lock up in Pattaya for about 1k a month to leave most of your gear🙃
Re High Risk Lunch: Based on my extensive travels thru India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and many other dubious culinary shitholes: A simple vegetable omelette with coffee or tea. And every single cook in every single restaurant can do this dish correctly & fresh, every single time. Eddy, it is Idiot-Proof, and that is what you want in a strange place...
Re Music at 7 min mark. Excellent tune, capturing the "strange place" vibe perfectly. Well chosen!
Re: An adventure, at a discount, ask any trike driver: "Girl?" "Cheap?" and point to your crotch, and then to his trike. His local knowledge is bound to improve on the Danish Bar...
The Steady Eddie Seal of Approval. Love it.🤣
Pikul is pronounced Pikun in Thai. In Thai pronunciation rules when the last letter is an L then the sound changes to an N. Great video mate, Nongkhai is my favourite Thai town for relaxation 😎👍
Thanks for the info!
Love Nong Knai visited many times my Mrs is from there
i was there in january, i stayed in the Mut Mee Garden Guest House next to the river . lovely place, with a English owner and his Thai wife.
I also stayed there it was fantastic great location Great rooms price right that's where I'll be staying my next trip as well
It’s always good. Last time I stayed there was 2015. Terrific breakfast pancakes.
Excellent vid. Enjoy
Hi Eddie, enjoy your travels mate. Nice to have a glimpse of sun through my phone!
It’s the same here in shit Sydney Australia and it’s the summer, let’s go son 😂😂😂
Give me Nong khai over Udon Thani any day.
Friendly people and great food.
Great video Edward 👍👍
Nong Kai very peaceful place,
Top man steady Eddie love your videos 👍😉❤️
Definitely worth a couple of days.i enjoyed time there.i would definitely go again when going into loa
Cheers Ed, thanks for the video.
Thanks, mate
Let us enjoy the sights and sounds of the place instead of that crap music
yep, had to skip it, awful.
Great blog n tour Eddie..onwards and stay safe
Thanks, you too!
Lovely view that Ed 🤣, it’s great to see these locations I knew nothing about. Hope you’re having fun, cheers 🍻
Another nice vlog good sir and, I reckon you made a good call with both local transport from Udon, as well as the stay at The Pikul Apartments 😉👍.
Hi Eddie The first and last time I visited Nong Khai the road from Udorn was 2 lane and nothing but rice fields all the way. Nong Khai was mainly dirt streets and there was no bridge to Lao just an old ferry.... 1966 what a change..
Thanks for the info
I’m 72 now….. with a quadruple bypass. I have to return to Cambodia and Thailand and live out my last years there.
I hope to do the Buddhist Pilgrimage in northern India also, and visit Sri Lanka.
Probably base myself permanently in Cambodia though. I like Siem Reap.
Namo Buddhaya from Canada. 🙏🏼 🙂 🇰🇭 🇹🇭 🇨🇦 ☸️ 🌴 🌴 🌴✈️
I like the room. Like a small apartment. Closed in balcony seems like a cooking area as well. 600b is fine. I use to take the train from Korat to nong Kai regularly in the 80s. Very pretty town Nong Kai. Great sea( river) food. Friendly locals. No bars in those days but the bars you’ve checked out seem perfect. Thanks for the video It’s food for thought. Next month. Maybe cast my net further than Pattaya Hua Hin Phuket next trip
Great vlog Eddy thank you for uploading and some cool ladies there not bad @ all
Glad you enjoyed it
@@STEADY599hi are you visiting bang saray from Scott new Zealand
That really is a nice fridge eddy😂😂. And dont forget the efficient bathroom.
Must of missed this one. Enjoying the travel vlogs eddie
Good food there 🎉
its aa well chilled border town to hang around in, enjoy
Ed, travelling anywhere in thailand by minibus/van is so dangerous- you hear of countless accidents using this form of transport, many fatal.
I would never ever take the risk myself, trains or planes is far safer - anyway take care and stay safe 🙏🇬🇧
It helps if you can wear a seatbelt. Not much, though
Will watch when home from my Windsor brewery crawl Ed. Hopefully this vid will inspire me to visit that town on the Thai side of the Mekong. 🤞🙂
Cool 😎
Enjoying you're trip Eddie not been to nong khai. Some of the comments aren't very nice Eddie why are they here ? Sat at home never been out of their back yard. Take care Eddie 😊
the beef stew and the pork steak look really good cheers Eddy !
Nong kai is a lovely place to spent a few days!
The great discover enjoying the vlogs makeing me feel better mate a other horrible winter day in birkenhead I back in Pattaya in November only thing to look forward to the u k very. Annoying at the moment
Nice place Ed and that Irish stew looked good, but isn't the climate a bit hot for stew? Cheers. Bill
What you must have ! Many Thaifriends in Nongkhai ! And this I have ! So it is for me never a sleepy town ! I know Nongkhai since 1985 !
Some cat houses (need ฿, not Whiskas) along the river-front. Or motorcycle-guy will take you to back-street houses. Lao girls come over for a month or more to indulge in the 'running-dog capitalism' of Thailand, compared to their nominal, communist state of disorder. In 2005, I picked up a cute, mixed Thai-Lao waitress in Nong Khai, taking her to Laos, Malaysia, Cambodia and around Thailand. Disappeared into thin air, of her own accord, 12 months later. Any local tryst lasting over 12 hours, and you're asking for trouble!
Brothels are all closed now, there used to be many with Laos girls but they were closed in 2014 same with the many brothels in Udon.
All this talk of brothels and prostitutes. Don't you know that this is a travel channel. It's about one man's refusal to conform, or whatever twaddle he says on the intro. Travel to many places. Well, mainly Asia. Mainly Thailand. Mainly Pattaya. And beer swilling.
I visited Nong Khai back in 2012 very nice place. This town seems to be frozen in time, looks the same as it was twelve years back. Great video Eddy
Thanks for the info
When in doubt go to the 711 for a ham and cheese toastee
Not for me
@@STEADY599 better than getting food poisoning
Surprisingly popular with Thais .
I prefer the sausage and cheese toasties
Eddie keep the videos coming mate
I prefer to take the train. Much more comfortable
Hi Eddie. I’ve been watching your channel now for years. All the trips etc but this latest retire abroad thing in my humble opinion just seems to be a total re-hash of what you’ve done numerous times before. But anyway good luck mate. Isn’t it going to get boring eventually.
I was thinking the same thing too. I'm same age as Eddy, have been to Thailand and around there a few times. I think it becomes a bit of a negative thing to just make that your life, mongering, drinking, cheap and often ugly hotels. And for me it was the drinking all the time, I could pull it off in my 40's, but in my 60's I think it'd would get old quick. Hope you're doing alright Eddy and much respect. And your videos where you were off the beer in the UK to me were more interesting and engaging.
Stepping into that hotel room is like stepping back in time 20 years which is a nice feeling for some us.
Great video again Eddy very enjoyable. My only thoughts of staying somewhere lower down on the scale is coming away itching, scratching, bite marks or a rash 😅. But hey part of the package sometimes.
I got savaged by bed bugs in a 4 star hotel in the middle of Pattaya last year. They're everywhere.
Been to non khai and Irish bar great places from Scott new Zealand
Traditional thai food, with stews steak, chips, and sandwich omg with spanish beers
Great video again Eddie, now go back to that bar and treat yourself to a beer and a woman. America loves you Eddie!!!!!
Thankyou
Nice one Eddie by the way do you get your uv/black light out in these rooms that you rent ?
Eddy you be careful , nothing worse than food poisoning when you are moving around .
Hi I myself have had food poisoning twice once in India in Delhi and once in a bus /truck stop near hua hin so like you when I'm on my travels I try to be careful where I eat
Looks like you will come to Lao
You might meet your next companion on a bus 👍😉👀❤️😂
Macys great food
Local Issan food looks great

Krap Pom
I've had food poisoning easily over half a dozen times in Thailand over the years from exactly what you mentioned.. part of the journey I guess mate.. just try navigate as best we can
a bargain stay price m8, just wish i could go to asia etc, its my legs the problem...so you are doing the sight seeing etc for me.. cheerz eddie
Best of luck, mate
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Your thoughts on the Samour Riverside Hotel? Looks good, especially for what they're asking; very reasonably priced.
I also did the mini-van from Central. All went smoothly until driver veered off route to deliver workers to a factory which added 20 minutes. Other than that, ok experience.
That hat though....
Buy a smaller suitcase and store the larger one in Pattaya for $20 a month at a self storage place. Some hotels will store it for you for free if you pre-book a room or are a regular customer.
ahh the traditional Irish chicken fillet roll. The end to many a night out
Their we went. lole
No beers 🍻 Eddie lol
My Thai wife's Aunty's name is Pikul. It's pronounced Pikuun. Thai's say N for L. It's weird.
Footbawn, volleybawn. And what freaks people out is Check bin originally comes from their pronunciation of n for L. So it's really check bill.
Don't believe me put check bill on an English to Thai translator. Now it's own thing that people refer to the little bucket with the dockets inside.
Got food poisoning twice in my own country of Canada. Once was at an open air market in Toronto. Felt like I wanted to die to end the suffering. Coming out both ends.
In six months in Thailand and two months in Cambodia….I never got food poisoning….not once. Even eating strange foods in isolated mountain villages and in bad poverty area in Cambodia.
Perhaps protected because of all the travel vaccinations I had before travel. Including Dukoral oral vaccine for Cholera and E.Coli Traveler’s Diarrhea.
I’ll be taking that again before I come back. The protection is not forever.
🤠Love the videos Ed, those stairs will keep you fit😜👍
Cheers, mate
Is this Pikul Apartment?
I satyed here 2 month ago.
Trust Eddie to get a hotel next to an Irish bar!
Big old tv in the room
FUUNY ED
Great video Eddy! Looks like a very relaxing town. Would love to visit sometime😊
"Pikul" is a Thai word. With Thai words in which the final letter is an "L", the "L" is pronounced as "N". The correct pronunciation of "Pikul" is therefore "PIKUN" or "Pikuhn". I know it's weird, but there are strict conventions for converting Thai letters into western letters (in which the western letters follow Thai rules). FYI, there are a few other weird rules used in converting from Thai characters to English characters. My favorite is the little "Do not pronounce me" symbol above Thai characters. It's a fun language, really -- derived from a very old one.
Thanks for your info
When in doubt, go grab something from 7-11!
Contaminated water, or out of date beer is usually the cause of poisoning in SE Asia Eddie, I had a jab years ago for this mate, and never been sick since. Worth looking into. Thanks for these very simple videos on your everyday travels, really enjoying your ventures. 👍🙏🏻🙏🏻
Cheers, mate
What was the jab called

Sir Steady,. How much was the room per night?
NONG KHAI has changed a lot since i was last there cycling in the mid 1990's - while I'm on the line I could never retire to Thailand there's not enough to do - Thai's dont seem to have the same margin for leisure as we do - they work 6 days a week and when not working they sleep - eat and sleep with boxing or cock fighting on a Sunday. my wife and I both prefer the Uk - she can work earning more money with great stability than Thaiside-while shes building up her entitlement to a pension- and i can still pick up temporary work when i want/need it - BTW her dads state pension in Thailand -700 baht a month !!! here in the UK we both love national parks whereas national parks in Thailand are often simply preserved areas....and of course the UK has Europe next door - i doubt Id ever retire to Thailand - friends have and settled there but they tend to have deep pockets and can afford the health care costs which -at the time of writing-are still free here-But all that said Eddie I love the channel enjoy life while you can
Thanks, mate
Eddy . Can I ask you a honest question. Does that leather hat not get really hot ? I know it must be good in the rain . I wear a Panama hat for the sun when I am away somewhere .
Exactly my thoughts too. Looks like head would boil under hat like that. It's best to dress how locals dress because they know what they're doing.
I'm comfortable with it
@@STEADY599 well that is all that matters. I also never see you drinking water . I can't take the heat . I'm always in the shade . Lots of water . I have only been home from cuba a few weeks and I feel like taking off somewhere again . I need to be more patient and save my money for a longer trip .
Pikul is my thai girlfriends name and she pronounces it "Pikun", hope this helps. because as explained to me often the thai words are wrongly translated in English because of the Romanesque system they use its like the airport ia actually Suwannapoom not Suvarnabhumi.
Yes - L at the end of a syllable becomes an N in speech. Hence Football becomes Futbon!
Thanks for your info
The old tvs got a bit of age to it.
You eat too much mate 😂
It’s fine….
The only thing you failed to mention was that those "van" rides, as they call them there, are pretty hairy! I've had plenty of experiences of death wish drivers!
Nailed the hotel location this week. No 300 baht round trip to the local pub. Nice!
People get confused first time in Thailand overhead wires majority of the black Spaghetti are internet wiring not electrical.
Really ?
The black spaghetti as you call it was there way before the internet .
I have been travelling to Thailand since the mid 1990's and the stuff was all over the place .
Have a read about them on the internet definitely states majority telecommunications wiring.Ive also been going there since 1982 & lived there for 12 years. Dtac internet technician also told me same story not electrical.
Anyhows have a nice day Mr Right.@@farangutan6773
@@barrycook7674It’s easy to see which is which. The wire that is coiled into loops at the posts is not electric power cable because you can’t do that with electric power cable.
Wrong place Eddie...go to Boxing street with good restsurants..bars..white inn hotel.. 600 baht also and much better!
Eddy what are you long term plans for Asia ? are your intentions after travelling to settle in one place in Thailand or wherever, or are you going to keep moving week by week. Love your VLOGS always informative. Cheers mate
I'll travel for a while and then settle somewhere
Cats dogs and San Miguel
7 eleven is a safe bet, bugger the naysayers, lol!, cheers , really enjoy the vid
Thankyou
Must admit Ed that even though I am kind of patriotic towards England, when abroad I prefer to be among locals or even other Europeans than fellow Brits. That Danish bar would perhaps be my place for a beer in Nhong Kai. Great looking bar woman too. ;-]. I share your sentiments regarding cats and dogs. Did your bed have the dirty dozen frolicking in it the night before the night AFTER??? 😂😂😂😂
Yes, you'd like that bar. Good to hear from you.
Your v😅does Re getting bor😅no
Being a top monger . How friendly was the lady's, did little edd enjoy them
decent little place to stay. might be better ones nearby for a little more coin but so what. i spent many months locked down in vientiane during the c-flu insanity. laos was okay actually but i used to jog along the mekong every day looking south and longing for the forbidden fruit of thailand.
in my many years in and around asia i learned to dress as decently as possible in public. an open neck shirt with collars and long pants, unless exercising. maybe a ball cap and sneakers. shaven if in public, a dash of cologne. neednt be expensive and can still be comfortable. appearances count alot in asia.
I went to Nong Khai in 1985 and looked across the river at the communist state of Laos. I was the only Westerner there.
rice is HIGHLY fertile breeding ground for germs n bugs
Bit of a rough Room Eddie my prison cell at strangeways was better than that
I liked it - clean, not shabby, and large. Unsure about the bed though - might be the typical hard Thai mattress, which would be a big no from me. Eddy should comment on that aspect.
My last hotel in Cuba was like a Soviet prison camp ! 😂 the only good part was the women . ( oh and I got a good haircut )
@MikeLickorish You haven't seen many Asian guesthouses, obviously. The ones where you need to check inside the pillow cases for sweat stains. Where the windows are stuck open or broken with heavy traffic outside (and mossies having free access). Or with cockroaches scuttling about when you switch the light off, and streams of tiny ants finding any food you leave open. Stained mattresses and bed bug infested bed clothes. Fan rooms or bad aircon during the humidity of April. Trust me - there are much worse places than this. Ofc you may have more opulent habits than ppl like Eddy and me; that might explain it
@@peenokjaidee4923 It's not about opulent or not, that room is just quite low standard, I much rather pay £30-£40 per night and actually stay in a nice hotel with new or almost new facilities.
That TV is standard from like 25-30 years ago. Not that I watch TV in hotel anyway.
@@peenokjaidee4923 well said Sir
Why would anyone lug a huge Case around like this? Get a Backpack or decent holdall, really no need to be lumping that about and then moaning about it……
