What does the Bible say about sport?

  • Thousands of Christians around the UK play sport every week. Just think of the numbers involved: 15.74 million adults play sport weekly - that’s about a third of adults in the UK. The number is higher in the young-adult bracket where 55.2% take part in at least one session of sport a week, and even higher among 11-16 year olds where it is 86.6%!
But how many of these Christians playing sport are Christians in sport? In other words how many Christians don’t just play sport but actually see that their sport and faith are integrated? Not separate areas - “I go to church on Sunday and play sport during the week” - but integrated - “I play sport as part of a whole life view of worship”.
To see how someone can move from being a Christian who plays sport to being a Christian in sport let’s see what the Bible says about sport.
It may be a surprise to you, but sport is part of God’s good gift of creation. Sure, human beings are the ones who invent sports, but where does our playfulness come from? The creativity, the desire for human relationship, and the instinctive desire to play that all people, of all ages, across all cultures have, are all part of what it means to be made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).
God is the Creator and so being made in his image makes us creative with the talents to strike a ball, see a pass, or swim quickly. Equally God is a relational God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and so our desire to play with others pushing them on in competition comes from him. Sport is not some area outside of God’s good creation, it is an integral part of it, a gift to be enjoyed to his glory.
“But” I can hear you say, “if sport is a gift from God, then why is it often so bad, full of drugs, professional fouls, violence and cheating?”
Like any aspect of God’s creation, sport has been distorted from its original purpose because of our sin. Sin is not something ‘out there’ as if sport is the problem, sin is an internal disposition we all have to reject God and to distort his good creation. We use our talents to seek our glory rather than to play to God’s glory. We damage our relationships through cheating instead of playing fair. Sin infects sport just as it does every area of human life.
It is striking how much sport draws on religious words, ‘Messi the messiah’, ‘Usain Bolt the saviour of athletics’. Well the truth is there is only one messiah and saviour - Jesus Christ. God doesn’t want sport to remain tainted by sin, so he sent his Son Jesus Christ to be a substitute (a concept every sports person gets). He steps in to take the penalty we deserve, he is punished so that we can go free. He is sent from the field of play so that we can get back in the game.
Now risen from the dead Jesus Christ calls us to play to his glory. Romans 12:1-2 urges us to ‘offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship’. That means that sport is an area of life that can be offered to God as an act of worship.
Just think of the difference this makes when someone grasps that their sport can be worship - perhaps you are realising this for the first time now. God is not distant from the thrill you get when you play sport. He is not remote from the highs and lows of the competition. Your beating heart is his beating heart, your joy is his pleasure. After all he is the one who gave us the gift of sport.
So are you a Christian who plays sport or are you a Christian in sport? That all depends on the way you play. Play hard, play fair, and play to his glory - after all, it is worship.

Sport can be good and bad. It depends on if it hinders our relationship with God. Like almost everything - art, the Internet, music, it can distract us and depends on how we use it and how much we allow it to become part of our life.
Examples of when sport's culture is bad or good:
    - if you support and admire an athlete so much that you become obsessed with him and he becomes your idol. When this athlete becomes your idol? When you think more than him or her more than you think about God. And you start behaving the same was as this athlete and wearing the same brands as well. I idolized a couple of athletes not long ago.
    - if you choose to watch the World cup final or Wimbledon final instead of going to the church on Sunday evening.
+ if the sport that you do makes you think about God and makes your relationship with Him sturdier. I found this in the last year doing 2 sports. Playing football (alone) and doing cross-country skiing.
+ Some athletes share the Gospel or thank God when they win leading people to faith.
It all depends on how we use it.

@@bryanstockhausen5077 Please read my first comment again. Take MJ (basketball player) for example. Does he know he is good at the sport? sure and whenever he steps on a court he will try to prove he is good but by no means has he ever called himself the greatest. There are even multiple interviews of him forfeiting this title because he wanted to respect all the great people who played before him. If you cannot as a "Fellow Israelite" figure out how to play a sport for fun and without "dominating" someone else I think you have an issue. Also, the disciples were arguing who would be greatest in HEAVEN which again how can you compare that to an NBA championship which is nothing more than a profession. You compete in your profession every day too. If you do poorly there are people waiting to take your spot in your job and do better than you and also whether you may not like to admit it or not when you are at work you know when you're a better worker than someone else but it doesn't mean arrogance until you start to act on that feeling in a bad way (which a lot of Christians do in the church, forget talking about profession). You're acting as if sports players think they are the best humans in the world and they are gods because they've won a sport. They are just extremely happy that they've done well in their profession which happens to be a sport. Also, God is one to talk about competition and sport. He literally wrestled Jacob and was losing so messed up his hip to win. Don't act like people winning a sport is equivalent to them trying to say that they are higher than God or better than other men in all aspects of life. If you actually followed sport and followed athletes you would know that is entirely not the case. Also, the world of sport is wide so you will get arrogant people but are CHRISTIANS one to talk about arrogance. There are SOOO many arrogant Christians, especially pastors and deacons who think they are better and more holy anointed than the common congregation. The entire medieval ages is bishops and clergymen high in the church using it for political power and treating common church people like scum. Come with a better argument, please 😑😑😑

No one steps into the playing field to lose but to win, to excel above the opponent, to compete, and with competition comes pride (l am better, stronger, faster and smarter etc) and pride was in the devil and the beginning of downfall (ISIAH 14:13-15) i mean..2 grps of devoted Christians steps into the playing field at rivalry with each other both prayed to God for victory to glorify him.. but in the end one wins and one losses, is God being bias? God is no respector of person meaning he is just (not bias) and he never changes, same forever.. then what went wrong? Are we not causing confusion (which God is not the author of..as the Bible declared) God has no pleasure what so ever in enmity but amity, let us do things that is pure in motive and action and has no intention of bringing harm to our neighbors physically and spiritually, and stop doing doing everything that has no relation to God whatsoever but are being labelled "giving Glory to God" when in reality we just want to consume it upon our lust..God bless 🙏

It's basically like this if God says and one of his ten commandments no killing and then your government change the law and say that you can kill it doesn't change God's law his law will stand forever just like the true Sabbath day and so if you want to honor God and plan your sports you will play but you will say when it comes to the Sabbath day from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown I can't go to practice I can't practice I will not play then you will be honoring God and people be wondering why your teammate why is she or he not playing then you'll be able to witness because of the gift God has given you. And it also goes in the way we dress God says cover yourself up they may go with short sleeve shirts short pants on that's not of God he says cover up so you're playing the sports but you got the long shirts on and you got the long pants on when you're covered up they might say why does that person dress different from everybody else you're standing out because you are a true child of God and one of his remnant you're standing out from the world and what they do and how they dress. Now if you break any one of God's law to play sports you're not giving God honor whether you say God I give you honor cuz a lot of people do in sports they run track and field yet their butt is hanging out you can see between their legs and they put their hand up and kiss and say thank you Lord but that's not going up to the heavens of heavens there is a part of where God says wickedness in high places and so that's where that prayer is going it's not going to the true God but to the false little g o d swimming you don't have to be naked when people go out in the colder Waters they be closed up you can be closed up we dress because of the world say this is how we do it but we're not of the world we're in the world and that's the difference cuz we know this is not our home so we don't talk the way they talk we don't look the way the world look we don't walk the way to worldwide we don't even eat the way they eat we don't dress the way they dress then you give God honor in your talent and you can find anything pertaining to your life what God says that you need to do and how to do it be blessed everyone

Engaging in sports is a waste of time and an insult to the teachings of the Holy Bible. Colossians 3:2 tells us to "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." Ephesians 5:16 commands us to "redeem the time, because the days are evil," meaning we shouldn't squander our precious moments on pointless activities. Listen up, 1 Timothy 4:8 makes it clear that "bodily exercise profiteth little," showing that sports and physical pursuits are of minimal value compared to the eternal benefits of godliness. Matthew 6:19-20 warns us, "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth... but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven." Why invest in fleeting earthly rewards when eternal treasures await? And let's not forget 1 John 2:15-17 which boldly states, "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world... And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever." This isn't my opinion; this is the infallible Word of God. Stop being a sports fiend and start living for the Lord!

We believe the Bible encourages Christians to engage with culture to live and speak for him, so that others would turn and be saved. There is a clear biblical mandate for this, for example Jesus words in Matthew 9:38 and the great commission in Matthew 28 encourage us to go into the world to make disciples of him. Romans 12:1 also helps us understand that our whole lives are to be lived in worship to God, including what we do with our bodies. Of course sport is a context where there is temptation to sin, to store up earthly treasure, or to love the world - but this is true of every single earthly context - this point alone is not enough to determine sport as an activity Christians should never engage with. Furthermore sport is a wonderful context to enjoy community with those around us, the Bible says sharing life is valuable especially in the cause of sharing the gospel (1 Thessalonians 2:8 is one example).
So we believe sport is a brilliant context within which to worship God and witness to those who don't yet trust him. And we believe strongly that this view is reasoned from the Bible. If you want to dive deeper into questions you might have, our channel has plenty more videos exploring the Bible and sport, here's a playlist you might find helpful: czcams.com/play/PLdOAXBe2gExIKsx2jUvDdb29vAnCXHrQL.html

@@christians_in_sport You are twisting scripture, and the Bible doesn't support sports in any way. Firstly, the verses cited to support the engagement with culture, such as Matthew 9:38 and Matthew 28:19-20, are specifically about evangelism and spreading the gospel, not about participating in secular activities like sports. These verses emphasize the need for preaching, teaching, and baptizing, rather than engaging with worldly pursuits.
Secondly, Romans 12:1, which calls believers to present their bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God, emphasizes living a life wholly dedicated to worship and service to God. This verse does not support the idea of engaging in secular activities but rather calls for a life set apart from worldly influences.
Thirdly, while 1 Thessalonians 2:8 highlights the value of sharing life and building relationships, it is in the context of sharing the gospel and living a holy life, not endorsing participation in secular activities like sports.
Moreover, the argument that sports provide a valuable context for community and sharing the gospel overlooks the potential for sports to become an idol, diverting time, energy, and focus away from spiritual growth and service to God. The Bible encourages believers to be in the world but not of it, meaning that engaging with culture should not lead to compromising biblical values or prioritizing worldly activities over spiritual ones.
You should wake up and look around you. Sports have never been the answer in the Bible, or God would have mentioned it. It's not about what you or I believe; it's about what the BIBLE SAYS!!! Therefore, the statement misinterprets and misapplies these scriptures, making it a false representation of biblical teaching. Engaging in sports or similar secular activities is not supported by the Bible, and believers are called to prioritize their spiritual growth and service to God above all else.

@@late8641 @Late the bible stops us from doing things that are dangerous, ok by your logic, since the bible stop us from doing things such as hate and murder, now all of a sudden it makes ok to murder just because you don't believe in God, if sex addict loves to with sex his sister, which is wrong in the bible and in life regardless, which as religion stops us from incest in the first place, it suddenly makes it ok because he/she/they are an athiest??
, look, religion is one of the reasons why people live their best lives, and I said, their is an opposite, and so what if religion is the source of homophobia etc, their are many things that are the source of many things in the world, sex is also the source of rape yet we aren't doing anything about it, money is the source of the majority of crime yet people still make it, and according to modernity, their is nothing wrong with that, desire is the source of addiction yet we are Still allowed to desire, yet all of a sudden when religion exists its now a problem, listen I get homophobia is a problem, but believe it or not, people are allowing people for them being themselves, I even know a Christian who is bisexual and a Christian who is gay and all the Christians I know are fine with them,I myself had bisexual tendences(and possibly still, and maybe I am bisexual but I don't think so)yet all my Christian friends are fine with that. Already in life(not just the bible and any religion) we are taught acceptance, so of course in modern society we are told to allow someone regardless of who they are, and sure the bible has a bit of mysonigy but that has Changed, in the bible we are taught to love man and woman equally, it's in the bible, and what progress or morals,my progress in life has actually been better when I believed in Christ almighty and in christianity, and my morals have been so much better because of Christianity and modernity and for many other people to, if whatever reason you cannot respect peoples beliefs, then atleast respect them for who they are, and if you are for equality, then you should respect everyone regardless of who they are and approach and respect everything in same category(whether good or bad) and that's true equality, and its very ironic that me(who is a Christian) is respecting your belief as an atheist, which according to your argument, religion has bad things which suddenly makes it bad which you are considering without even focusing on the good things about it,yet you as a person who implies that you are for equality, simply cant respect my belief, wow, people so surprise me these days, but hey, it's people, what do you expect?, best not expect anything.

Go box like crazy. God literally wrestled Jacob then got up in the morning and blessed him. That is the meaning of sport, does God hate Jacob for wrestling him? or for fighting back? He even was winning and God had to dislocate his hip so that he could win. Even after all that they still hugged it out and God blessed him afterward. That is the meaning of sport so if you wanna box then go crazy. Go knock someone out

Fitness boxing is absolutely no problem at all. Real boxing isn't in my opinion, the goal of boxing is too hurt someone as bad as possible so you win, this is very much sin. Other sports Contain violence too, but it isnt the goal and often it is punished.

Romans 12:18: “If possible, as far as it depends on you, be peaceable with all men.” The Scriptures clearly show that we are to produce the fruitage of God’s spirit such as love, peace, joy, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22,23) Professional boxing flies in the face of all such fruitage. We are also told to live our neighbors as ourselves and love does not work evil to one’s neighbor. (Romans 13:9,10) Life is a gift, so risking one’s life or hurting another person can also lead a fighter to become a manslayer. (1John 3:15)

@@sunnyjohnson992 Either you are ignorant or lying, men involved in professional boxing can very well leave a match with love and greater respect for an opponent.
