Both the Feanor series and this series were absolutely epic. Came here after the disappoint of the RoP show, and I’m just realizing how much more there is to Tolkien that just the LotR
If you really want more take the time to get through the silmarillion and it opens up everything. All the other lesser work expand on it in great detail
I agree, its almost criminal.... what the woke morons of Amazon did with this epic story. With virtually unlimited funds, they produced, what the woke left always produces..... garbage. In short? That is all they can/could produce is garbage....just like Morgoth. They have no capability beyond that after all. The irony of it, should not be missed on anyone, though it will and you will see it first with comments berading what I just said, despite being absolutely true.
21:45 Up until this point I had never seen a map of how large Beleriand was, and it absolutely floored me. As a fan who's only read The Lord of the Rings, I'm astounded at how much I've missed out on - and the sheer size of Beleriand as compared to where the main trilogy takes place - the unbelievable span of time, and all that has been lost - made me really melancholy. Look at all the good that had been taken thousands of years before Frodo even exists. I know this is common knowledge for some, but to find out the depth of history here is unbounded is really exciting. This world feels real to me in a way that wasn't the case before I watched this channel. And for that I'm very grateful.
Coming back to this years later...this is still one of the best things on CZcams. It's on par with Sir Christopher Lee's reading of the last stand of Hurin.

Yep. Fingolfin stands alone in badassery.
I get Orcs being scared by Fingolfin and all his lesser servants fleeing, but you have to think that Morgoth kept at least a few Balrogs around him as a personal guard as well. And and even these guys were like 'yeah we're not fighting that, good luck boss.'
I also imagine this is one of those situations where Sauron runs away so quickly that he leaves a Sauron shaped cloud behind him like in a Bugs Bunny cartoon.
Jesus Morgoth really goes through it huh.
- Permanently maimed hand, burnt by the silmaril.
- 7 permanent wounds, including one that gives him a limp
- Still probably got a bit of a tickly throat from being strangled by ungoliant
- probably lost a few teeth from his kicking from Tulkas
- now having his face carved up by Thorondor
Don't forget after all that he gets cast out into the void for all eternity. How maddening would that be? Just lost in a void of nothingness and darkness forever with nothing but your own thoughts and hatred and pain to keep you company.
No less than he deserved for all the anguish and evil he inflicted.

You make a good point about Hador Lorindel. Though I think his elvish name is “Lorindol”: that would mean “dreaming head” in Quenya, but “Lorindel” wouldn’t mean anything. Regardless, it’s a good point. Fingolfin’s anger in this moment never really made much sense to me: but like, it’s Fingolfin so I just assumed it must be justified. I mean, yeah, I would be cut up about losing Angrod and Aegnor too, but Fingolfin’s reaction is reminiscent of Fëanor’s reaction to Finwë’s death. I just never thought that much about how the House of Hador came to dwell in Dor-lómin. The fact that Fingon just gives up having his own realm… remember, this is the reason he came to Middle Earth in the first place. This absolutely speaks volumes to the effect Hador must have had on Fingolfin. Especially since Fingon apparently can’t stop giving him presents: the Dragonhelm was also from Fingon. The only reason Fingon would act like this is if Hador was a light in his father’s life. That makes sense, Fingolfin can’t have been doing too hot when the Edain showed up. He was grieving for those who’d fallen on the Helcaraxë, he has a serious case of year-sickness, nobody wants to fight the bad guys, and to top it all off Turgon has absconded with Aredhel to goodness only knows where. Having dealt with depression myself, I know that sometimes the most helpful thing is just a new perspective. Hador, just by being human, would have brought that. Of course Fingolfin was so pissed off he looked like a Vala. He’d just started to enjoy life again, thanks to Hador.

In the moment where Fingolfin road to challenge Morgoth he shows just how similar to his older brother he really is. When pushed far enough both brothers would rush into a fight they knew could not be won but wanted harm Morgoth so badly that they’d sacrifice their lives just to make him feel fear.

I always had Fingolfin as a blonde in my head. I mean, it makes sense that he's black haired, being a Noldo but his mother being a Vanyar made me imagine him blonde. Also to distinguish him more from Feanor.
Tolkien lays all of that out in The Prince’s of Eldamar in The Silmarillion. Finarfin was the only one to inherit the blonde hair from Indis.

Tolkien himself participated in Battles that lasted for many many months such as the first Battle of the Somme. Tolkien himself knew the true horror of battle, battles that lasted for months on end with massive numbers of soldiers using rifles, artillery, planes, bayonets, horses, tanks, flamethrowers, poison gas that would block out the sun on a battlefield devoid of all greenery. He was able to describe the horror of the battles in his writings because he actually experienced similar battle and horrors himself which people today can only imagine through books, tv shows, and movies.

Wow.... This is a video plus encore. Thanks so much. I think it is interesting that both heroes like Frodo and villains never fully recover from wounds in battle. This means battles are never truly won. There is always a cost.
When the British entered world war one or the great war they saw it as an opportunity for acts of manly valor but it ended up costing so much for those men who died or returned home with permanent disabilities.
America went off to two wars 20 years ago with the same naivete that wars could be easily won and were worth the cost.
How many times do we have to learn this lesson. The wounds never fully heal. Even the stronger side might be permanently weakened by fighting.
Very well said! I've heard the Lord of the Rings described as a tragedy disguised in the clothes of a happy ending. I think there's some truth in that. War always leaves a mark, and the mark does not fade when the fighting stops.
There’s an incredible song about the duel between Morgoth and Fingolfin called Time Stands Still (At the Iron Hill) by the band Blind Guardian. It truly does this battle justice and thought I might as well share it here.

Nah Feanor is, he was the only one who Morgoth was actually scared of. A one on one with Feanor and Morgoth would have been good to hear about.

But by the time Fingolfin challenged Morgoth he had lost much of his power.
And yes you are correct saying that Morgoth did have some fear of him, however it’s not the same (in my understanding) as his fear of Feanor. For the mightiest of the Valar to show genuine fear in the undying lands because of someone’s spirit, not through a challenge. I think shows how much he truly feared Feanor.
And yes sadly Tolkien didn’t allow the revenge that a lot of us wanted, so we had to take his death fighting balrogs😢.
Even if he had made it to Morgoth I’m not sure he could have killed him, maybe just more wounds that wouldn’t heal.

This has been so an incredible series! Now I feel confident rereading the Silmarillion. After finishing it the first time, I was left with the sense that I missed so much of it.
Fantastic video! Fingolfin challenging Morgoth is so amazingly inspiring! He knew how powerful Morgoth was and he stood against him anyways. Being a bit of a defiant fellow (some would say more than a bit) these sort of story’s appeal to me in a very deep way. I can’t wait for new videos!!

I love Féanor and Fingoulfin, not gonna lie Féanor was so interesting to me as a teen when my dad told me he took on " balrogs " and a Dragon. But when I read the Silmarillion and Féanors attitude and behavior, it reminded me too much of my younger brother, me, and have a toxic relationship very similar to these two. I'm more like Fingoulfin whereas my brother is a weasel.
I feel like the stories of the First Age would make fantastic anime. Especially the duel of Fingolfin and Morgoth.

Amazing story telling as always! In the past, I have always envisioned morgoth as this powerful evil badass who is untouchable and is very stern. That was before I had known the full story of the silmarillon and had just seen fanarts and some bits of lore. Now, I see him as a (for lack of a better term) sore loser who is always arrogant and just wants to ruin other people's day.
The duel of Feanor and morgoth is just so epic and I have imagined some scenes that would really look cool if seen on the movies or painted!
Sauron also seems like an impersonal generic evil at first impression, but in the full legendarium he's a big nerd who wants to take over the world out of the belief that everyone else is too dumb to do it right.

The battle between Fingolfin and Morgoth is probably by far my favorite example of the trope: The hero proving even gods can bleed.
Wasn’t Morgoth’s power less great by the point he fought Fingolfin, from spreading his power thin by creating all his servants. Still a magnificent feat but he wasn’t as strong as in the beginning.
His personal might was spread very thin. But he was still very mighty
It seems that every time q character in the books is expending soul essences to spawn creations and provoking words of power for spells their spirit wanes a little, we see this with Galadriel and Sauron later. Perhaps surviving Ungoliants assualt had required some grand enchantment before the Balrogs showed up and his magic was lesser?

@Utube Fknsucks he was much reduced. The silmarils did not give him power , he coveted them and stole them out of pure jealousy not for more power. The silmarils were hallowed and he could not even hold them without being burned. He put forth much of his innate power into the world itself and into domination of millions of beings and creatures. By the end he had fallen so far that he never came forth to battle and then Ran and hid from Eonwe and begged for mercy. He was shown none and they chopped his feet off and chained him. Had he been his former self that would not have happened

It’s not like Fingolfin actually treated Hador like a dog. That’s not what he’s saying. It’s just a comparison to their lifespan differences - Fingolfin has the same perspective toward Hador that we have to our own pets: the knowledge that we will only have them for a short time before we inevitably outlive them.

I am reading The Silmarilli for the second time, but this time it is indepth with more appreciation. I can't wait to get to this part. Right now I am at the part where Feanor is mulling over asking the Teleri for help with their ships. I think this is the First Kinslaying.

@@tolkienuntangled Yes, I really appreciate it now but what really helped are your videos. Once I got the background of the story from it, I am able to understand the book better. It is amazing at the depth of the lore that Tolkien made. I hope Amazon tried to do follow as closely as possible. It will be amazing to see Finrod Felagunds death in the series, and I hope they show all the major battles and occurrences of the First Age. I think Finrod is my favorite elf, along with Glorfindel. I will read the Children of Hurin next.

I’m guessing that Morgoth doesn’t have to live with the pain of that bad foot forever. When he was captured by the Valar, but before his final removal from Thangorodrim, I think, “They hewed his feet from under him. Maybe in the void he will have ghost pains from the wounds on his missing foot so he can remember Fingolfin in the void.
These videos keep getting better and better. And you haven't even got to the most epic parts yet.
I never knew that "Himring" survived till the fourth age! That is insanely epic.
Your videos are amazing. I've never read the Silmarillion, or any works of Tolkien except the main trilogy and the Hobbit, so learning about the first age is fascinating and you tell the story so well. The series are incredible, almost impossible to stop watching once you begin. I can't wait for the continuation.

I will say, I have read all the books/stories I have ever been able to get my hands on when it comes to Tolkien and Ea. I said to my gf who rightfully calls me a complete nerd that one day this duel and it's lead up could well become one of the pivotal moments in cinematic history if in the hands of a great and inspired director. I guess partly why this epic and enigmatic passage has such an impression apart from brilliant writing is how much you like this loyal brave and overall decent character before this all goes down and how utterly defiant it is. Has a bit of beethoven shaking his fist at fate going on if I can pull out a real world analogy. Never forget the first time I read this.

Great video, but I would add another view to the duel between Fingolfin and Morgoth: Fingolfin martyred himself and while doing that he crippled his enemy. How badly would the elven kingdoms have suffered if Morgoth had been able to move with his armies? Or just transfer his base of operations closer to the action? Morgoth was forced to sit inside his fortress and work through other, lesser hands. Hands that had seen the cowardice and weakness of their lord. Fingolfin fought well but he also did much harm to the capabilities of the great enemy with his last act.

I would like to know what are your genuine thoughts and response to those guys who claim that Fingolfin riding alone to challenge Morgoth in a one-on-one battle is a sign of his (in their own words) "uselessness" and "incompetence"?
I honestly have no words for them because I totally understand what extreme rage, despair, and the desire to avenge those you love can cause anyone to do something so crazy and unthinkable.....I cannot roll my eyes enough to those people😒😒😒....I wanna assume that they're also the type of fans who would claim that despite killing the Witch king and actually surviving fatal wounds, Eowyn (in their eyes) is "selfish" and "irresponsible/negligent" for disobeying her uncle and leaving her people leaderless.
Yeah I think that's definitely a one dimensional and not particularly nuanced take on Fingolfin. Tolkien clearly intended Fingolfin to be wise and highly competent, which we see loads of times earlier in his life.
I also think criticizing Fingolfin for his challenge of Morgoth (or Eowyn for what she does) is massively missing the point of what Tolkien was trying to do. His characters are not written to hold 20th century values, they are part of a mythology that is rooted in Anglo Saxon themes and concepts. The idea of riding in wrath to delay the long defeat is a hugely important part of Saxon and Germanic mythology, and this is what Tolkien was drawing from. I think Fingolfin is up there with his best characters.
A lot of the artwork depicting Fingolfin vs Morgoth makes Morgoth look a little comical in size IMO. He puts his foot on Fingolfins neck and I think that should say something about his size not being THAT big. He should be big, but come on.
I agree. A lot of Tolkien art exagarates the size of the villains. It looks great, but it doesn't make sense in many cases. Morgoth, Ancalagon, and Durin's Bane are three of the worst offenders.

It is the providence of champions that their very nature requires an indomitable and unyielding spirit. Only when one gives their ALL that their measure is taken. Notice how when the arrogant and haughty 'C' brothers were put to the test they demurred then fled to the west. They could've just as easily joined forces with Maedhros and ended all those eastern conflicts much sooner. Sad that so many children of Faenor became disappointments.

Make no mistake, i have enjoyed this series. You have touched so many of the questions i wanted to ask, but never did because i didn't think any one else would admit they held the same questions. Probably foolish on my part! Something that i hope you do not neglect in your talks is that Tolkien was a Catholic Christian. It is often said that his writings were not Christian allegory -but you cannot blame people for seeing allegory in them. They are truly rich, and touch deep into the soul. They know who we are, and who we want to be!
